    i'm running windows 98.

while cleaning out my computer & cookies, I realized that my "index.dat" files were bloated with all this garbage i'm not sure supposed to be there .. (total, all my index.dat files are 7 mb.)

are index.dat files needed, or can I delete them or replace them with a fresh copy?

    thanks.

  2. Still more problems

    Date: 04/06/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm getting tired of this. I just replaced a 'bad' power supply with a brand new one... And now, just a few days later, it's got this other problem where the power never goes off, the screen will be black but I have to switch the pwoer supply off from behind then unplug it from the motherboard and plug it back in. The problem on the old power supply was the opposite. The power would just cut out all together. But now it keeps running, at least the power and the case fans are on, and I have to switch the power supply itself off. I don't know why I keep having power problems. :( I can't afford a whole new computer with O/S full deal like Dell or anything.

For no apparent reason, Outlook Express has decided to remove every attachment I get in email saying that they are "unsafe"

How do I make it stop doing this? It just started doing it today and I checked my virus program to make sure that wasn't blocking the attachments.

Is there anyway I can get it to let me view the attachments?

    Thank you.

  4. video playback problem

    Date: 04/05/05     Keywords: no keywords

    hi,

I reformatted my OS recently since it was lagging and practically out of space...but now everything is back to normal besides the fact that whenever i play a movie from a cd or from my hard drive...the sound plays but not the video. the sound plays in divx, winamp, and WMP but neither of those 3 play the video. before the sound comes on in windows media player, theres a brief message saying error codec missing or something like that...it comes and goes too fast to read it all clearly. can anyone tell me which codec i'm missing or what the problem is and how it can be fixed so that i can view videos again as well as hear it? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to any comments/suggestions.

  5. screensaver stops working

Date: 04/03/05     Keywords: software, virus, antivirus, spyware

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop that's running Windows XP Home w/SP2, and I've been having issues with my screensaver. I didn't change my screensaver settings or anything recently, and about three days ago my screensaver stopped working. I had my screensaver set to turn on after 10 minutes, and when I noticed that it wasn't starting automatically, I changed the settings so the screensaver would turn on after one minute. I tried changing my screensaver from 3D pipes to Starfield. It still didn't work. I also have my settings such that my screen is to turn off after one hour, and it doesn't do that either. I've tried using XP's Help and Support with no luck, and I've tried Googling to no avail. I've done spyware scans and I've run my antivirus software as well, and I found nothing wrong. I just don't understand how my screensaver could just stop working when I've done nothing to change the settings. If anyone has any advice or solutions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

So I got a laptop from my brother who got it from a friend that was going to toss it because it's not working.

Well, I charged it up and turned it on, and the light comes on and it sounds like it's booting up but nothing shows up on the screen. :\ nothing, total blackness.

It's a Compaq Presario 1685. Anything have a clue as to what could be wrong with it? Or around how much it *might* cost to be fixed?

It had some "boot disk" ie: floppy with boot disk written on it. Nothing happens with it in the computer though. I'm not sure whats on it, and I don't trust putting it in my computer, hah... so yea. I'm going to get a cd-rw tomorrow and burn a new boot disk and see if it just doesn't have anything installed on it.

hey gang. i'm having this problem with my computer, i think it might be a video card problem. i was just navigating the web, and my monitor screwed up. the screen turned black, except for some parallel blue horizontal lines that were a little under an inch wide stacked up and down, about three inches away from each other. i saw something sort of like it a few years ago when i overclocked my card, and it burnt out. i also tried using an old monitor on it, and it still didn't work. i know my description is a bit vague, so if any other details are needed, i will try my best.

    thanks!

  8. Lj HTML

    Date: 03/31/05     Keywords: html

For some strange reason my Lj HTML coding isn’t working, it looks right and correctly coded example ..

Wont come up as a name tag, nor are my cut’s working. Another example.

I’ve asked this question at another community but I don’t think its HTML misspellings, being that when I tried to copy and past my overrides all that would show are both global head words eg

    GLOBAL_HEAD<=

    <=GLOBAL_HEAD
(That’s all that will show up)

Even when I Alt +A select all.

Any ideas what may be wrong?

EDIT: i've used both Avast and Adware, and i am clean. if that helps.

    Date: 03/29/05     Keywords: virus, web

    Hi,

My monitor has recently been acting weird. It randomly turns off and back on when im on the web. It appears to have stray marks on the screen as if someone scratched it from the inside. It also randomly lags while switching between windows and programs. I've checked my PC for any mishaps/viruses....results for that came out clean so my guess is its not the PC...

If anyone can place any input on what to do about this...It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  13. It just keeps getting worse

    Date: 03/28/05     Keywords: no keywords

More and more problems just keep piling up!

I really can't take this! The mouse keeps going "out". 9 times out of 10 when I'm booting up and it asks for the apssword (which I don't want on ehre and can't get rid of) I can't click "cancel" because the mouse will ONLY scroll up and down. And it's a new mouse! So it's not the mouse. because there is the 1 time out of 10 when it will boot up and scroll left to right. But now that only lasts 5 minutes and then it stops scrolling left to right and I jsut can't do anything without being able to move the pointer left or right! >:(

I'm also a little pissed that I can't use the shift + arrow keys to highlight and delete text anymore. And it's a brand new keyboard as well. >:( But the mouse not scrolling let to right pisses me off the most! >:(

I wish so much I could get a totally new computer but with O/S and everything that's always $1000 and I'm just far too poor to have ever had a new computer. My first one was a used computer, and that's the hard drive that runs this barebones system I got a year ago. And it's FUBAR!!!!!!
    I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

    [cross posted here]

Hey. I'm new here, so I hope I can just ask away. My new desktop computer is great and all, but when I go to a certain site like http://www.caedes.net, find a nice abstract picture I like, click on the full size version, right click and go to "Save As...," it default sets the title as "untitled.bmp," and the only file selection choice as Bitmap. I'm pretty good with computers, but with my laptop it would take the name the picture would be as the default choice, and I don't know how to save it as anything else besides bitmap. It's not a bug, that's for sure, but I just don't know how to change it. Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated.

  15. Disappearing Device Driver

    Date: 03/27/05     Keywords: software

We recently installed a new network card. Our computer has been crashing, and then on restarting bringing up the Add New Hardware Wizard because it says that a PCI Ethernet Controller has been detected. On searching for drivers, none can be found on the system, nor on the cd that came with the network card. Clicking on Next or Cancel so Windows can load and reinstalling the software on the cd has no effect. We tracked down the problem to the Ethernet Adapter in Device Manager (Sitecom PCI Fast 10/100 Ethernet Adapter LN-020). When the computer is working fine, it's there under network adapters. When it is not, it has "vanished" and sometimes there is also an exclamation mark in a yellow circle flag under Other Devices in Device Manager. Presumably the drivers are still there, but Windows 98 just can't "see" them. This is really frustrating because we can't connect to the internet while it's gone. Oddly, if we switch off the computer and leave it overnight, Windows loads fine, no new hardware is detected, and the Adapter has magically reappeared in Device Manager.

So what's happening, and how can we stop it from happening again?

Thank you for any help you can give us!

  16. IMAP vs Outlook! FIGHT!

    Date: 03/25/05     Keywords: web

On the mail server, I have my inbox and other folders. Everything was fine, until one day Outlook would crash just opening up. Before it did though, I caught a glimpse of all these weird folders. Right-click Outlook icon -->Properties --> IMAP tab --> Root Folder Path. In there, I put INBOX. Now Outlook does not crash and my inbox shows up.

Highlight Inbox --> Tools --> IMAP Folders...
Uncheck "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders."
    Click "Query."

    Nothing shows up.

If I use the web interface, my folders are still there and unchanged. The weird thing is with the Root Folder Path. No matter what I put in there (currently it's "asfsafsdfsfd"), the situation is stable: Inbox, but no other folders. If I leave it blank, it crashes Outlook and you see this:

  17. No sound

    Date: 03/25/05     Keywords: no keywords

Now that it seems like the problem was just the power supply and my computer seems to be stable and not shut off... I don't have any sound!! I've installed it over a dozen times and in the properties, it says it's working, there's nothing wrong, but there's just no sound!!! Most programs won't play videos because it says there's no sound card, I cna only watch stuff through Divx because it will let you just play video without the sound. but it's really pissing me off to not have any sound. Should I just get a sound card (even though the on-board worked before I swapped power supplies) or would that be a waste of money and not work either? The cheapest ones I can find are C-Media which is what the onboard is and I don't trust C-Media becuase it doesn't effing work now. >:(

  19. associsdangerous error msg

Date: 03/23/05     Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, spyware, microsoft

i apologize in advance because i know this will turn into a lengthy post, as i have searched high and low for the answer(s) to my problem.. and found several solutions, some of which contradict each other.. and i am at a loss.. literally. since my computer will no longer boot up.

my issue is this.. i receive this error msg when i try to start up my computer (hp,running on windows xp home edition):

    1) winlogon.exe entry point not found. Procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll. When I click on "ok" or the "x" , I get

    2) Logon user interfce dll msgina.dll failed to load. This restarts computer back to the first error. I cannot get past this.

from what i have read... several ppl have had this issue after doing some sort of windows update on xp dealing with service pack 1 i think it is. however, i thought i had a virus since my computer was all sorts of acting up (saying low on memory, going reaaaally slow, and my internet explorer would not revert back to homepage and obvious adware, etc)...

so i decided to uninstall and reinstall internet explorer.. hoping it would at least help for a bit so i could run my spyware/adware programs to get rid of some of it (i have netscape as backup).. so i do that, and i go to restart my computer and this happens.. it will not even boot in safe mode.

i then go out and get norton antivirus, hoping this will get my "virus" and i create some emergency disks.. only to find there is no virus at all.. and after some more research i learn it is a microsoft problem.

i guess i will get to my real point out of all of this. has anyone else had this issue or known someone with it before? what did you/they do to fix it? i have heard of using the XP cd to boot into Recovery Mode to fix the corrupted files.. and then i've read not to go into Recovery Console at all because that will mess it up? i really do not know.

Also, my other big issue is that.. i do not have my XP nor a factory restore cd or anything. my computer came with it previously installed.. and anyone else in the house either had the same or has no idea where it is. so i'm stuck. i can make emergency boot disks from the microsoft website..however, it says at the end of the instructions that to finish the set up, i will need the cd anyway. any suggestions? thank you so much in advance!!
