3D Logic puzzle game

Play this game on your lunch break or when your brain needs some exercise:
http://www.mygame.com/game/3dlogic2
It's almost like the circuit design job I do. Many times at work I would ask myself, "How can I uncross these signal lines?!"
You will get to ask yourself the same question in this game, after a while.
It uses cookies, so it'll save your progress for future fun.
(Today I called it quits on level 15)

Spilled coffee on laptop

My sister just called me and told me she spilled coffee on her laptop, and now half of the keys don't work. She took it in to the place that she bought it from. How likely is it that it can be fixed, and at what type of price?

Notebook/Tablet Monitor Trouble
Date: 11/03/07
Keywords: virus, google
I have a Compaq tc4200, notebook/tablet. It's about 2 to 2.5 years old.
I've searched for answers, googled, but nothing really helpful yet, so before I hand in my laptop to local pc repair shop, I wanted to check in with fellow geeks. My weak point has always been laptop repair.
The monitor on my laptop will, at random moments, just go blank, but each time a different color of blank. So, for example, I'm online and reading a post on LJ and then suddenly the monitor just turns neon green, or pink, or blue, or any other shade and hue and color you can think of.
If I close the laptop, let it shut off, and then open and turn it on again, everything is back the way it was before my monitor blanked out.
It feels like it might be the video, but I want more input to know for sure before I do anything.
I love my laptop *sniff* *sniff*
I've ruled out viruses and the like. AVG is up to speed, running perfectly, AdAware checks out, Defender checks out, CCleaner, etc... no slowdowns in performance, just the monitor.
Any guesses?

Starting MS in Information Systems
Date: 11/01/07
Keywords: programming, java
Question for all programmers out there, in January I'm starting my MS in Information Systems. This is not a programming intensive major, but I intend on picking up a few languages along the way and I'd like to continue to upkeep them afterwards. The majority of programming in this degree will be spent in JAVA (I intend on learning PERL, Python, and probably some combination of the M$ languages [C#, VB.NET, etc.]). Anyway, to get to my question.
I don't want to do development on my machine, I'd rather run it all on a sandbox, and I have the space to have another machine running nearby. What would your recommendations be on specs on said machine, OS, memory req's, etc? I have my own feelings and I'll respond in comments when a few people have responded.

I've been using Mailsnare for years, but I'm finally fed up. They no longer have a customer phone line, and my account shows 98% full in spite of being nearly empty. The spam filtering has gotten worse and worse. It's time for a change. Any suggestions? Or comments, if this is actually as good as it gets. TIA.

It turns out that my 2 DVD readers don't write, and life is too short to do photo and system backups to CDs. Time to buy more hardware! Any recommendation for DVD writers? Brands to avoid? Great classics? Either Newegg or Fry's will probably be my shopping spot. Thanks.

cable confusion
Date: 10/25/07
Keywords: no keywords
I recently bought an S-Video cable for my ATI X800GTO card. Now, dipshit me figured that S-Video is S-Video. Nope.
Apparently, the connector needs a 10-pin HDTV cable, not the standard 4 pin.
Now, I am having a hell of a time trying to find myself a 10-pin HDTV cable and a gender-bender to connect the two so I can connect it to my TV.
Any suggestions on where I can find such things? Newegg is coming up with nothing.

Vista boot freezes after restart following hardware change
Date: 10/24/07
Keywords: no keywords
Here's the deal! For the past few days, Vista has paused a bit while trying to load up. Yesterday, it simply would not complete the loading process. The progress bar would hang, and it would either stay there, or the screen would turn black.
Tried dusting out the case. Tried repairing using the Vista DVD. Tried removing all USB devices. Tried removing some PCI devices. Tried a memtest. Tried reinstalling Vista. Tried installing Vista on another disk. Tried removing the original disk. Tried removing a memory stick, and then the other. Tried flashing the BIOS to the latest version.
Every single time I tried one of these things, Vista would boot up once, and work until I restarted it, and it would hang again. So that's my problem: Vista works as long as it detects a change in hardware; otherwise, it hangs on boot. Very weird!
The only remaining thing I can think of is buying a new motherboard, but I'm really not sure if this motherboard's broken. It works wonderfully when Vista is up and running.
Otherwise, I'm flummoxed. Has anyone heard of anything similar? Is there anything I might be forgetting?
(My desktop's hardware specs are in my profile.)

Flakey cable internet
Date: 10/23/07
Keywords: no keywords
I recently moved to a new house (not even a mile away), thus prompting a technician to come out to the new house to get all the outlets ready (the new house had never had cable installed). Everything was good to go; he said the levels were fine, etc. However, ever since using the internet at the new place, I've been having issues with the consistency of the connection.
Sometimes it'll load pages quickly, as it normally and always did at the old place. Other times it'll partially load the page, then give up on the other half of the page which usually includes large graphics. And even worse, sometimes it won't load a page at all and just time out. I'm not sure if
my modem has passed its prime or what. The way I have it set up is: the modem is directly connected to my wireless
router (MR814v1), which provides internet for the computer upstairs. The router is then connected directly to this PC (running XP). I've checked for any loose connections and such. Not sure what else it could be. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks in advance.

hi. new here. i am a dell user and am having some serious crappy issues with my dell. it's a inspiron/B130....
what happened was i stupidly decided to clean my C drive and somehow...i cleaned my whole system. everything is just wiped out.
i have no internet, no files, no volume control, can't get into windows media....you get it....so, my dad says "do you have the "reinstallation cd backup system?" and i look and i can't find it. oh, damn.
so, we both go on dell.com and we're there for like 2 hours and we can't find the cd/order it. we've gone everywhere on the site.
does anyone here use dell? does anyone know if there is another site to order the reinstallation cd?

What Laptop? XPosted Only Because You Guys Are So Good
Date: 10/19/07
Keywords: web
I'm going to be traveling to the US to see family and want to purchase a laptop while I'm there.
I've looked at the Best Buy website and had my eyeballs on a Vaio laptop BUT
I notice the model numbers do not correspond to models in the UK and of course
I'll need a different AC adaptor once I get back home, is this a problem or can I just
use a standard US to UK plug adpator with the charger that comes with the laptop?
Is the Vaio a good buy for $599? My daughter plays Final Fantasy online and we need
something with a good graphic card.

Gateway Solo 1450 reinstall
Date: 10/16/07
Keywords: no keywords
I am attempting to format my Gateway Solo 1450 with a clean install of XP Home in preparation for its new home.
I have tried to use Seagate's Seatools DOS to format the computer's hard drive but Seatools does not recognize the hard drive (20 gig Parallel ATA).
So I figured I would just use the restore cd that came with the computer but I cannot get the computer to boot to cd-rom. This happened when I tried the Seatools on cd as well but I just figured it was because it was an older computer and I just loaded it on a 3.5 floppy instead.
The boot sequence is configured to boot to cd, then floppy then hard drive.
Any ideas what is going on here?
Its a cd-burner/dvd player combo drive. I don't know what type exactly since its been a while since I've bought this computer and its never been my main computer.
How can I clear off this computer?
Thanks!
(I have access to XP Pro but I'd have to get my hands on it, its my father's)
