1. Video Codecs

    Date: 10/16/07     Keywords: virus

I'm wondering where to get video codecs online (I use Media Player mostly for watching videos, but often it'll fail to load or download the proper one).
I've been searching for a while, but all I can find are trojans or some other kind of virus.

Also, what do you use for viewing video, seeing as I'm not too much of a fan of WMP.

(By the way, mostly I'm looking for an AVI codec.)

And one last thing - Video Converters. Does anyone know of a free one that has no limitations on use?

  2. LJ Tool

    Date: 10/16/07     Keywords: no keywords

Does anyone know if there exists a tool for LJ (an external app, I suspect) that would let me slurp my whole journal (much like ljarchive) but (and here's the kicker), execute a command along the line of "delete every entry dated in 2004?"

I help maintain a community in which we want to delete every entry made in 2004 or older. LJ support says no such functionality exists, and I can't find it in any known (to me, at least) LJ application.

Anyone know what I might have missed?

  3. I miss DOS

    Date: 10/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

Back in the days of DOS, it was easy to print a listing of the files in a folder. Is there any way to do that in Win XP? Other than a screen shot? Thanks.

  4. Deleting Windows Vista on Dual Boot

    Date: 10/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

I recently added XP to a Vista-only system at the request of an acquaintance and I would like to delete the original Vista partition and merge it with the current XP partition so as to have an XP-only system. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or is this simply impossible? I was going to back up both the XP and Vista partitions and then try to format the Vista partition using the Windows XP install disk and then reload the bootloaders to the XP partition using the Windows XP install disk. Does this seem like it would work or will I break the computer forever doing this (or at best waste a lot of time?)

    Thanks for any suggestions!

  5. HP Laptops

    Date: 10/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

My father's company uses tons of HP laptops and he says they've been amazing. My friend's father also uses them at work and says they have many problems.

What are your opinions/experiences with HP laptops? Experiences? Particular models?

    Thanks!

  6. Would I notice the difference?

    Date: 10/11/07     Keywords: no keywords

I have a 17" LCD TV. Would I notice the difference between regular SD and HD on a TV that small in size, or does it really need to be a lot bigger? I usually sit around 3' from my TV screen.

PS: Sorry if this isn't really a computer question, but I figured you guys/gals would know a lot about it.

  7. Disc Check

    Date: 10/10/07     Keywords: no keywords

Do to me being blind, I don't know exactly what it says, but everytime I restart my laptop, it says its doing a disc check. Its 3 stages, stage one finishes, but stage 2 stops at 6 Percent. So everytime i have to restart I have to cancel it. What do I do to let it keep going but by-pass the 6 percent part? It just stays stuck there. Will system restore work? I really hope reformatting is not my solution.

  8. Have Your Say About The Banning Of Manhunt 2 In Britain!

    Date: 10/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

I'm sure that lots of people have been disappointed by the BBFC's decision to ban manhunt 2 from being sold in Britain.

Anyone that has been affected by this decision, or is simply annoyed by this, have your say by emailing the BBFC. I received a quick reply from them, so don't hesitate to contact them addressing your concerns.

You will hopefully email them if you don't like being treated like a baby, and think that adults should have the right ot make their own decisions. I emphasised this point in my emails to them.

  9. Foxconn mobo questions

    Date: 10/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking to get a new board since my DFI LanParty UT RDX200 is being infernal. Based on the available boards I saw for sale on NewEgg.com, I've narrowed my decission down to two possibilities:

Foxconn NF4SK8AA-8EKRS 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD

Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS 939 NVIDIA GeForce 6150 Micro ATX AMD

I am currious if anyone is aware of any known problems with these boards or if anyone has used this brand in the past?

Apparently DFI boards are very finicky and I didn't know that when I originally bought my current board.

  10. Hopefully last time :-/

Date: 10/04/07     Keywords: browser, css, java, web

    Hi everyone,

First off, thank you to everyone who has helped thus far!

I have two final small details both relating to IE6.

I still cannot get the sub menus in the drop down menu to display. It works in IE7, Firefox, etc, but not in IE6.

The other "problem", though if I don't find a solution to this one, I won't be overly upset, is in all other browsers I have the whole website centered. In IE6, it is aligned on the left.

The website again is here. The CSS is here and the Javascript is here.

I truly appreciate this. I have been googling this problem for several hours and would appreciate any feedback!!

    THANK YOU!!!!

    Brittany

  11. Hardrive Went "Missing"

    Date: 10/04/07     Keywords: html

    I posted earlier (http://community.livejournal.com/computergeeks/1109386.html).

So, his family wanted to wait to do anything due to some things going on. In the meantime, we opened up the computer to clean it out with the canned air. There was lots of dust & fur from the dog, but it wasn't as bad as some of the computer I've seen. I've done this before along with a few other things with my mom (we've done the basic upgrades on different computers). We then had to move it so they could clean out the room.
When we put the whole thing back together, and I booted it (from the Windows CD), then tried to run the recovery console, it said it couldn't find the hardrive. So we shut it down, and opened it again thinking we knocked something out of place, but everything was in the right spot. All the cables were connected to where they needed to be. So I tried again, and went in the start up menus, it could find it there (I ran a diagnostic), but for some reason, the Windows cd can't find it.

Any thoughts? (again. sorry, I'm starting to feel really stoopid)

  12. Apple hard drive on a PC

    Date: 10/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

I used to have an Apple G4 iBook. Said iBook is broken. The hard drive, however, seems fine. I have disassembled the iBook, put the hard drive in an external hard drive case, and now I just am wondering, is it possible to access the files on this drive with my PC or will I have to plug it into a Mac, burn everything to CD/DVD, and then put the files from those DVDs onto my new PC?

Also, once I have the files I need, can I format the drive to work on my PC? How do I do that, since when I plug it in, my PC recognizes that a storage device is plugged in, but does not display it in My Computer?

  13. Does anyone know....

Date: 10/03/07     Keywords: browser, css, web

I am using IE 7 and the website I'm designing has vertical drop down menus and I can't click on any of the sub-menus without the menus disappearing.

Is this an IE thing or just an IE 7 thing? Does anyone have any solutions for this?

It works correctly in Firefox, Netscape, Opera, and Safari, but of course it won't work correctly in the most popular browser!

Here is the site and here is the CSS.

Any help with this problem would be appreciated! I've been searching for over a week and I'm at a complete loss.

    THANK YOU!

  14. USB Access

    Date: 10/02/07     Keywords: security

I can access my personal USB drive on my work computer, but it won't let me delete or move files on it. Apparently the security isn't set correctly or something. I don't have administrator rights on my work PC. Is there any way to change my USB settings so that no matter where I plug it in, it recognises me as the owner?

  15. Dell Latitude D600

    Date: 10/01/07     Keywords: no keywords

This seems like a really stupid question, but apparently Dell can't answer it, so I'm coming to a higher authority- computer geeks.

I decided to burn a DVD tonight on this Dell Latitude D600's burner, but the burner, instead of having an enpty space in the middle like every other DVD drive I've ever seen, has a brown plastic spindle. The spindle is too large in diameter to fit through the hole in either the CD or the DVD blanks I have. I could understand a spindle that held the disk on a laptop, but this doesn't seem to do that. I am perplexed. Has some part of this drive been lost or does it take some other type of disk? I've tried a TDK DVD+ and a CD-R in it.

Thanks. I can't even find decent pictures of what it should look like.

  17. For Hiring Managers..or anyone that does the hiring

    Date: 09/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

I have a question for all the hiring managers out there...

I had an interview the other day for a position that would eventually open alot of doors for me. I interviewed with the IT Manager of the company. Anyway, she asked me alot of the typically questions and of course that pertain to the job itself. She was happy to hear every answer I gave to her questions, she kept saying things like "That is great" and "That is what I want to hear". It seems like we had a great rapport going. Talking about different off-topic things also. She said right then and there, she does wanted to bring me in for a 2nd interview to meet with the other managers.  I really felt a positive vibe going in my favor.

My question is basically, these are all good things about the comments she made, or is that pretty typical of people saying that in interviews??

    I reeeeeeeeeally want this job.

  18. Dell D600

    Date: 09/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Dell D600.

tried 2 power supplies, and a good charged battery and the laptop wont turn on. no LED blinks or anything.

i suspect there is some kind of short somewhere but i didn't find it when looked for it inside out. reason for suspicion - when you plug in the power supply on its own, there is a led on the power supply that turns on, but as soon as you plug it into the laptop that led turns off. both power supplies are known to be good and working.

anyone had similar troubles? where could be the most obvious short in this laptop?

before it completely failed there was a day or so when you pressed the power button and all the status leds would blink rapidly for a second or two but it wouldn't turn on (with either battery only or plugged in)

    thanks

  19. PDF viewer suggestions

    Date: 09/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

I hadn't noticed that Adobe removed the ability to save forms using their reader until I needed to do so very recently. So, I'm looking for recommendations on a PDF viewer that will simply view PDFs with low overhead and also let me save form data.

  20. Question about installing a video game.

    Date: 09/29/07     Keywords: no keywords

I recently got a new computer. I had Madden Football game on it and an MVP Baseball game on my old one. I had the person just transfer everything over. The football game transferred over no problem, but the baseball game didn't work. He suggested I uninstall and reinstall it. When doing that, I discovered that I am having trouble installing the game. It takes two disks to install it fully. The first one works great, but when it comes time to take out the first disk and put in the second one, that's where the problem starts. It doesn't appear as if my computer can even FIND the second disk. It just sits there and does NOTHING. Why would the first disk work and not the second?

PS: I just realized I may have used the wrong spelling of "disk" in this entry. My bad. :)

PPS: I have XP HOME, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 1 GIG of RAM.
