How does one "create" a programming language?

I mean, how was Sun Microsystems for example able to create Java?

  3. Anyone plays Diablo 2 LOD? Game running issue.

    Date: 04/04/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi guys and girls.

I'm having problem with my Diablo 2 and LOD addon. Both original CDs. It installs just fine, but when I start the game, it keeps telling me that I don't have CD in my drive even when I do have. I have tried both of my CDdrives. I also made iso image with alcohon 120% and tried it with daemon tools. Still the same problem. I also patched the game to latest 1.11 version. It didn't help. The CD is fine, I installed the game on other computer and it works just fine there. Can anyone help me to get to play my favourite PC game? I always play on bnet so other versions than 1.11 wont help me. Please some ideas what I could try? I'm not very eager to buy a new DVDburner only because it _might_ work on it. Also I haven't been able to find noCD crack for 1.11, which I also shouldn't be using since I have the original CDs.

  4. Hard disk on its way to failure?

    Date: 04/01/06     Keywords: no keywords

One day I was bored and looked at my System Error log in my event viewer. I noticed I had quite a few events. Most of them were standard messages, but the one that stuck out to me was some disk errors. It appears that whenever I boot up my computer I get like 19-20 disk "Warnings." They say:

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation."

When I click on the link for more information I get this information:

Should I be concerned about this error? My computer seems to run just fine, and I would never even know that this error was happening had I not opened my system log. Is this a ticking time bomb situation or should I not worry about this as this is a "basic" error? This is on my new computer that I got for Xmas, so the HD SHOULD be working fine.

    The system specs are:

    AMD Athlon X2 4400+ 64bit
    250 GB SATA HD
    3 GB RAM
    Nvidia 7800GT 256MB SLI Card.
    Windows XP Pro SP2

    Thanks.

  5. LED indicators in GDI+?

    Date: 03/31/06     Keywords: no keywords

Anyone know of any code anywhere in GDI+ (.NET c#) to draw LED indicators?

I'm trying to create a windows form that has graphical components similar to a modern synth. It's for a product demo, and "das blinken lights" will impress the customers.

Failing actual GDI+ code, some straight-on bitmaps would at least let me make the controls that way.

    Anyone?

  7. DVR Hard Drive

    Date: 03/28/06     Keywords: php

I came across a Dish Network DVR at a garage sale, which has a HD inside with a capacity of 100Gb(DVR 625). Providing the HD is ATA/133, can I pop the drive in my PC and format it for use as a data drive? Aside from some extra performance features tailored for video http://www.weaknees.com/maxtor_quickview.php -- wouldn't it work in my PC? I have no use for the DVR itself.

  8. Setting proxy?

    Date: 03/28/06     Keywords: no keywords

Forgive me if this should be obvious. I'm onlyone semester in to my IST studies ;)

I have DSL at my house. Got the receiver and router set up fine. My computer runs brilliantly but my mother's runs like cold molasses. Slow as all heck. Was told that if I set my computer as a proxy to hers, it will speed hers up. How would I go about doing that?

Both systems run XP (mine runs Pro, hers runs Home edition).
DirecWay DSL. LinkSys Router (model befsr41 if that matters).

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  11. What should I charge?

    Date: 03/27/06     Keywords: no keywords

I recently got a new monitor. The old one is sitting downstairs collecting dust. A friend of my moms mentioned she might like it. IT is a 17" CRT monitor that is about 3-5 years old. I have NO IDEA what I paid for it back then. It still works great. I just wanted a new one. What do you think I should charge this person for the monitor?

  12. Upgrading a notebook

    Date: 03/26/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've been putting off upgrading my laptop because I was planning on building a new desktop when Vista came out. Since that is looking less and less likely to happen anytime soon, I'm going to upgrade. Currently I'm running a stock Toshiba P25-S507 with 512 mb (2 x 256) of RAM, a P4 running at 2.8 ghz and Windows XP Pro. I play a few computer games and work a bit with Photoshop. Seeing as I'm now on a budget, what would you do if you were in my shoes? Does the higher priced RAM make that big a difference? Is installing a hard drive with a higher RPM an effective way to increase performance and is it worth the cost?

  13. Win 98? Hard Drive/ Data Recovery

    Date: 03/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

So anyway. I need some help. I have a Western Digital 1.6 GB HD that I believe was used during my Win 95/98 days. I am not sure, but I do not think I can just plug this old drive into my slave spot on my new Win Xp (eMachine) and take a look at what is on the disk.

Assuming I am correct, is there someone I can just mail the HD and a CDR disc to...have whatever can be recovered burned to disc, and just get the disc mailed back?

I think all I really want are the Favorites/Bookmarks and any photos/jpg's..word or works files...

  14. Playing Video on the Computer

    Date: 03/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've been having some trouble playing videos on my computer lately. I use media player classic and it's been freezing randomly.

Tonight I uninstalled Divx, Xvid, Ace mega codec pack and started reinstalling stuff.

I reinstalled Ace Mega Codec pack v6.03 and Matroska Pack v1.1.2. It seems to be a lot more stable now. It plays every MKR, AVI, OGG file I have tested.

What are some video packs you've tried?

    What are your favorite packages?

  15. Ical/Sunbird -> Outlook

    Date: 03/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

I have a pocketPC, and I want to get my contacts and calendars on it. Naturally I use Sunbird and Thunderbird.

I got my contacts copied over to Outlook, but I keep getting errors when I try to import my vcs files into Outlook.

I don't want to rewrite my calendars into something like XLS format to import them. Is there a program out there that will convert correctly?

Thanks for the help, I tried searching but only came up with Outlook - Sunbird/iCal, nothing backwards.

  16. Seriously.. Try it.

    Date: 03/23/06     Keywords: web

This week I got to attended the Computer in Libraries 2006 conference by InfoToday in DC. I shortly realized that I am truly a geek because I work with computers in a library. :oP

Here is a geeky link for you all to try curtsey of the Computer in Libraries conference. A french company called Exalead as created an amazing search engine that uses intutive thinking. Which means if you enter the word or phrase it will give you a range for related topics, then you can sort them based on type of file and/or catergory the website is listed under. My favorite features are the Phonetic search (sense I am a HORRIBLE speller) and the quick view/thumbnail of the website (excellent for the visual memory). When you click on the webpage it will give you a quick view of the page, then show you where all the words from your search are in the page. EXCELLENT tool! Seriously. Check it out.

Unfortunately, you only have the web based search, but it can be used for your computer and network drives. Excellent neat tool.

  17. Ram Latency Question

    Date: 03/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

I was browing around NewEgg.com and found some good deals on RAM and thought maybe now was the time to upgrade. I have 2 512's and I'd like 2 more or 2 more gig ones (yes, a 2-3GB machine.) I was looking at reviews though and lots of people were mentioning the Latency ratings of the RAM and that you need to pay attention to that. From what I can tell the current RAM i have is 2-3-2-5 Latency. Most of the RAM i see available are like 2-3-2-6, 2-3-3-7, etc etc. Will having these 2 different latency sets drastically affect my performance in a negative way? Will a 2-3-2-6 dramatically hurt my 2-3-2-5? If its a negligable thing then I'll just get the RAM, but if I'm sacrificing speed for storage, then I may wait a bit more. Any info on this is appreciated. Thanks.

  18. excel

    Date: 03/22/06     Keywords: no keywords

    quick question about excel.

i know there's a way to make collapsible columns.

im not sure how to better explain it but its like this:

    A B C D E F G

you can have BCD, grouped together, and if you don't want to see them, they fold into eachother, and you see EFG. then if you want it vice versa you expand BCD, and fold EFG.

    hopefully that makes sense

    using Excel 2003 pro.

asked my cousin he said go to data and grouping, went there no such thing as grouping. so hopefully someone can help.

  19. Switch issues?

    Date: 03/22/06     Keywords: no keywords

    A nuissance of late...

Lately, randomly, when I try to access a site, firefox gives me the "cannot resolve XXX" or somesuch analagous message.

    1) Not locally cached sites.
    2) I ping my router immediately when I get the message, and it pings <10 ms.
    3) After I ping, I get the same error.
    4) other network activity (AIM, FTP, etc) appear unaffected.

My network config is me->switch->router->cable modem.

Admittedly, a friend told me the switch had port trouble, but switching amongst the 8 ports seems to yield me nothing but the same problem. And besides, wouldn't my being able to ping my router tell me that it's not my LAN?

I don't know if maybe my ISP's DNS is awful at times or what, but I can't figure it out and it's making me crazy. It usually lasts about 15-20 seconds, but it's most annoying.

    Any ideas?

  20. Certification questions

    Date: 03/21/06     Keywords: no keywords

I'm at a point in my degree that I want to decorate my resume with some certifications. I'm currently working at the HelpDesk at school and would like to stay in that general area.

Right now I'm looking at taking A+, Network+, Sercurity+ and am wondering if it's worth taking the exam prep classes? From the research I've done, I could pass the A+ and the Network+ based on some of the course work I've done. So the question is, is it worth paying the $600 or more for the prep class? Is there any reason that I couldn't get a good cram book and pass? I've had hardware and OS classes, and use Windows and Macs at work.

    Thanks!
