So awhile back my computer was running super slowly, so I got a virus/antispyware program, ran it, and wiped out all the spyware and crap. Then, after that, my internet stopped working, so I tried several things which didn't work. I assumed that when the spyware was deleted, it also deleted an important file that the spyware was attached to, so I reinstalled windows. However, it's still not working, but it's acting differently than before I reinstalled windows. Before that, it was acting as if there was no connection at all. Now, it's saying that there's a connection detected, and it starts counting the time it's "connected." However, when I try going to a website, it doesn't work.

One more thing. When I plug in the wire to connect to the internet, the green and yellow light are on. And I have DSL.

Does anyone have suggestions?

ok, i don't know anyone who programs in assembly language, it's just something we have to learn in computer science.

anyways, i have to write a program that reads from a text file of ten integers. then the program opens the text file and displays only those that are even.

i can get it to open the file, but i am having trouble with it to just DISPLAY the numbers from the txt file. i am just trying to get it to display all the numbers before i tell it to just the evens.

so i just need anyone's help for displaying the content from the text file in assembly!

I'm considering purchasing this laptop and i was wondering if anyone bought the same model and can tell me how well it works. It seems like a great deal for the price (512 mb memory, 60 gb hardrive, internal wireless, cd burner, 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery) can anyone see any flaws with this? I don't have much experience with laptops so I'm not really sure what else i should be looking at.

In terms of sheer processing power for Photoshop, what is the top-of-the-line Apple configuration, including monster monitor available right now? And can it be configured with two of the monster monitors?

I need to convince a client that what he wants is going to cost more than he's willing to pay (and if he is, indeed, willing to pay it, ensure that I get to say I got to play with it! :-))

A few months ago, my dad installed a screensaver onto his user space on our family computer, and while it's not affecting anyone else's desktop, he's had constant problems with his own ever since.

The common tasks pane that's usually there on the left hand side when you open up folders has attached itself onto his desktop, and try as I may, I've found absolutely no way of removing it. I've searched Google and various other search engines, and only been able to find how to remove/add the common tasks pane in actual folder windows - I can't find anywhere that addresses the concept of having it on your desktop. Even trying to remove the common tasks pane from the folder windows like My Documents and then setting it as a default hasn't budged it - the pane is removed in all the folders, but remains on the desktop.

In trying to remove it, I've tried to access both 'Folder Options' and 'Taskbar and Start Menu' from the Control Panel, but for some reason, both of them refuse to open. There is no error message displayed, but absolutely no reaction to speak of from the pc at all, aside from a display of the 'busy' cursor for a second or two, before reverting back to normal, with no outcome. I've discovered that I can still open 'Folder Options' in other round-about ways, by going into Tools/Folder Options in My Documents, but the fact that I can't open it from Control Panel seems to suggest there is a problem.

In addition, the desktop appears to be in what I can only describe as 'read-only' mode: not only is there seemingly no way of removing the common tasks pane, it's also impossible to move any of the icons out of their current position, other than by deleting them, or dragging them into the folders listed in 'Other Places' on the (out-of-place) common task pane. I can still rearrange the icons according to Name, Size, etc, but they're still in fixed positions - although interchangeable - and turning off the 'align to grid' option has had no effect on this.

Also, the start bar is also occasionally prone to moving around without any prompting. If my dad logs off his account, or even presses 'Switch User', about 50% of the time when he returns to his screen, the start bar is either half-way up the screen, half its usual length, at the top of the screen, or occasionally all of the above. It has been known to happen that there are two start bars - one in the middle of the screen, and one at the top, without him having done anything to warrant this.

I've tried various different FAQs, troubleshooting sites, and spent hours tweaking options and settings myself, but none of them seem to help any of the problems. I've been trying to fix it for months, and I'm basically at the end of my tether, so any advice would be greatly appreciated - thank-you in advance.

*Running xp sp2

Everyday for the past two weeks I notice the update icon pop up on my task bar always set at 6%. It pops up multiple times during the day. I scanned with panda, mc afee, avast, and it shows nothing but i'm pretty certain it's a trojan. On Sygate firewall I notice lots of activity...packets sent and ports scanned, etc during that time also.

Also important to note: I turned off automatic updates and it still pops up.

Any help on isolating the trojan or advice would be appreciated.

Hello. I tried searching on this topic first before I asked but found nothing. I bought a cd-rw drive(comp usa brand) and it came with Nero Express. I am trying to basically back up my precious mp3 files on cd media. My first 3 burns with 600 or 700 mb on each cd play no sound on cd walkman, home stereo, xbox and car stereo. Also, they are difficult to work with trying to playback on computer; they crash computer. Is it the software, the burner or just the cd media I am using(memorex brand and tdk brands) that is the problem? Each file I am burning is a 100 to 150 mb mp3 file. I also burned a 6 file cd with iTunes, which was more convenient, but still had the same difficulties. Thank you.

ok so i have two slight problems...

well one bigger than the other..

the first is that my DVD drive in my computer will open a bit and then shut again
im not sure but does this have anything to do with the fact that my computer model has
a door in front of the DVD drive and as a precaution it has that mechanism in it?


my second more pertinent problem is my PS2 stopped working..
since id like to thik i can fix it if i put my mind to it im gonna try but i need a
little help...
my playstation used to not load up the game from the main screen, i took it apart and discovered that
the game disk may have been sliding over the ring that it sits on and maybe thats why it was not reading
so i melted a rubberlike substance onto the ring and it made the disk stick and the game work...
so after about an hour now i come back to playing the game and it wont load anything
ill run you through the startup sequence:

disk in
drawer shut
wait
load to very first screen where shows game designers (and it takes long on this part)
and then the main menu where it wont go past

if anyone has had a similiar problem to this i would GREATLY appreciate any help you can give
it would keep me from buying a whole new PS2 so close to the release of PS3 and i dont wanna do that

I wanted to get some opinions from people. I'm relatively new to linux, but have been a g33k my whole life. I have suse 10 running on my laptop and i've been having NOTHING but trouble with missing libraries / dependancies. It seems that no matter what I try to run (via RPM or compile) I'm missing something, somewhere. I've spent almost 2 weeks just downloading libraries and it's making me absolutely crazy. I have aptget and was hoping it would fix a few of my problems, but still I can't get many things working (gtkpod, vlc, xine dvd libraries, network manager, kismet just to name a few off the top of my head)

I'm open to the idea of switching distributions, will that help me at all? I was debating either fedora or ubunutu/kubuntu. Wanted to know what people with linux experience have to say about this. Any help would be apreciated!

I am on a Mac G4 running OS X 10.3.9, and I'm having troubles with my Yahoo Messenger. I connect to the internet through my work's T1. Yahoo Messenger usually quits after I send a single line of text, if it lets me sign on at all. I've been in contact with Yahoo Customer Care, but I really don't think they actually read the emails I send since their responses don't address my problem. I contacted my company's help desk, wondering if it was a proxy issue (since that had been a problem in the recent past with other software) and he told me that it's been happening to a lot of Mac users and they haven't been able to find a way to work around it. I was hoping someone here has any idea how I can fix this! I use YIM to contact the freelance writers that I work with, so it's not really something I can do without.

Here's what I've tried:
*Uninstalling and reinstalling YIM
*Connecting through Yahoo's java client/web messenger
*Installing Adium
*Clearing the Yahoo plist files off my computer, uninstalling YIM and reinstalling
*Scouring the Yahoo and Mac help sites/knowledge bases as well as several pages of Google search results

All I can figure out is that I'm not the only this happens to and that it's only my version of OS X and newer.

Has anyone here been able to fix this, or do you have any ideas of something else I can try?

Hi all,

I've got a crappy older Toshiba 6100 Satellite Pro here. Every time it booted, it froze. I've narrowed down the problem to the wireless zero configuration service. It is set to manual now, but any time I try to start it, instant freeze.

I've tried windows updates, driver updates, and reinstalling various hardware. I've tried running various sysinternals utilities to see if I can spot just what is causing this, but it freezes before any of the tools give me a hint or register anything in event viewer.

I'm guessing the service is calling on a corrupt dll file, but haven't been able to find it. perhaps a corrupt registry entry?

Hi! I'm looking into buying a new laptop computer. I am unsure about how big of a hard drive I need. Right now I have a 40gb hard drive (which is full) with an external 300gb hard drive (nowhere near full). I have all my games, itunes, music, a lot of pictures on my external drive. Personally I'm sick of having an external hard drive attached to my laptop. I think all my fun stuff is on my external drive. I want a laptop that I dont have to attach to the wall because really it defeats the purpose (at least for me). The options I have are:
100 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
100 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
120 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
160 GB 5400 RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (80 GB x 2)
200 GB 5400 RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (100 GB x 2)

Is 200 just overkill? I have a 40gb iPod and want to keep my music on my laptop as well. I also have several games. I have a 7.0 Megapixel Digital camera and I take a lot of pictures. I also have a lot of programs I want to keep on my laptop (my only computer at the moment). My desktop died and I dont really want to replace it before I get a new laptop.

Also is 7200rpm really that much better than 5400rpm?

Also should I get 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB), or 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB) or 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (1024MBx1)?

What video card is best?

I usually use Windows Media Player 10, and I like to have the album art dislayed, but I have noticed when I have a folder full of MP3's (which will be from one album) and have the hidden file folder.jpg in that folder that the image will show up for some of the MP3's, but then not for others. I was wondering if anyone knew any solution to this, as i'm not really all that fond of the "visualizations" that are on the player. I am running Windows XP home with Service pack 2, and WMP 10.00.00.3990 .

Also some help might be a decent player skin, which includes a playlist. I like the "classic" view the best really, but it lacks a playlist. Other skins lack the ability to use the function bar (for example Alt+F for the "file" menu etc) (this is critical for me, for I use the keyboard mostly when I am dealing with Windows.

Any help would be appreciated.

First, I'm fully aware of how to use Google and such to find information, but I'd like to know from experts (or at least those "in the know") . . .

I'm a PC enthusiast and have been an IT professional for the past eight years, but I'll soon be embarking on a new vocational path when I become an assistant pastor for my church. (Un?)fortunately, the church office uses Apple equipment exclusively, and while I could get a PC for my job, it'd probably just be easier to maintain the status quo (plus, I've wanted a Mac to play with for a while, and if the church is paying for it, sign me up.) So, my question . . .

What are the best sites or books for a Mac noob -- particularly for someone who is rather tech-savvy , like myself -- to visit in order to get started (or a head-start) with Mac use?

Let's say I have a friend named Eustace (for the sake of reference later on).

Eustace's primary hard drive recently committed seppuku, and he's bought a replacement. However, his copy of Windows XP isn't a bootable one. Eustace would like to change his boot order, drop a Knoppix CD into his secondary optical drive, boot this up, then put in his non-bootable Windows CD and install Windows that way (with the Windows CD in his primary optical drive, which will come first in the boot order).
Is this at all possible, or is Eustace up a creek without a boat?

The URL given leads to the file pict32.scr, and once opened it auto-terminates itself. I hear that Norton Antivirus isn't detecting it, and I know that Avast! Antivirus isn't either. Does anyone know of a program that is detecting this or able to remove it?

BTW - hyperlink on that URL has been changed so that no one accidentally clicks it. I've already contacted Avast!, as well as Tinyurl.com. Is anyone able to tell where url is being forwarded to? Perhaps someone could contact the folks of that webservice.

I loved Dungeon Siege(yeah, I know, humor me). I got Dungeon Siege II and have played it for about two hours so far.

Someone PLEASE tell me that the game returns to what made the first version great soon? This new version makes me feel like I'm playing a "choose your own adventure" game, with only two choices. It's so damned scripted! In the original version I could choose where I wanted to go, wander, take side trips, all that stuff. This version keeps me on a very short leash.

Anyone else found this to be the case? Is the whole game like this?

A thought had recently occurred to me. While reading an article about How Bill Gates works, I started to wonder about ol’ Henry’s future. Who would take over once he’s dead and gone? Where will his stack o’ money go? Will some sort of global underground party erupt on the day of his funeral? While he did help (some) to make the computer era what it is today, he’s still not the most popular man on the internet. He’s despised by many, and probably ridiculed every hour, on the hour. So which person will we despise in his place? Any thoughts?

Heya folks,

I just got broadband today. Go me! Anyway, As soon as I got connected, I got this message on the taskbar that went "This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. For more information, click this message."

Well, I could access the internet and my average download speed without download managers is around 50-60kb/s on a 512kbps subscription. I've googled the problem and it seems like machines with Windows XP SP2 are affected. I've downloaded and applied the patch, but it's still there. Should I be concerned about it? Or could I just go right ahead and turn it off?

As you guys could prolly tell, it's the first time I've ever had broadband at home (*single tear*). I don't really know what kind of speed I should expect from this kind of connection.

Ok guys, me again for another question

I've just cancelled my yearly subscription to McAfee Anti-Virus and Security Suite. I'm currently using Zone-Alarm for a free firewall solution, but I'm haven't found a free AV solution yet.

Are there any sites or products that you guys can recommend to me? I've heard a lot of Avast and AntiVir Personnal, but are there any other reputable and reliable ones? Is there any online studies and comparison between the various detection rules and whatnot?

I'd like to google for it... but I found more questionable content and products than anything...
