Antec Aria PS issues
Date: 03/21/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have a second-generation Antec Aria case, and I just upgraded my aging GeForce 5900XT card to a GeForce 6800 (both AGP). I can't run any games, and my benchmarks (3DMark 03, 3DMark 05, AquaMark) render horribly. After much bios flashing, underclocking, etc, I am positive it is the 300w power supply that is the issue. Does anyone know of a beefier power supply that will fit this case? Some sort of mod?

Help?

I think someone's hacking into my AIM account.
I got two messages since last night with someone going:
[03:39] the greathatsby: i say, old bean, have you seen my hat?
And when I answered them back, last night, I said I didn't know them, and that was that. So then again just now, they did it under a different name["scrubtron"]. When I answered it back, there got some fucked-up crossed wires or something: I thought I was answering this whacko, "scrubtron", but the person on the other end was my brother, who said that on HIS IM screen, *I* was coming up AS "scrubtron". Knowing that people like our asshole friend Thumper love fucking with me, can anyone tell me here WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON?
And if anyone messages you with that name, it SURE as hell isn't me. Where can I fucking REPORT this? In this "scrubtron"'s User Info, it says "mess with the best, die like the rest".

R . A . T . ?

I'll start with a quick hullo, I'm new to the community.
I found this community by searching "hacking" under LJ interests.
Now I'm not quite sure if that's against the guidelines, so I won't delve to deeply into anything. But...
Does anyone here have any experience with Remote Administration Tools (RATS)? My intentions are completely experimental, and I'm having trouble connecting to the "other" computer, even with their IP address.
Once again, if this is against the rules, go ahead and delete this, I'm just wondering if anyone here shares my interests.
Alright looks like I have an "okay" from the boss, so here it is:
El Problemo-
Just verifying that my intentions are for educational / experimental purposes only, and I'm actually working between two of my own computers. This is just something I'm playing around with, and I would never try to infect someone's computer without their permission. And I don't think I'll ever get anyone's permission. So I guess I'm just kind of amusing myself here.
I'm using "ProRAT" from prorat.net. The program seemed user easy enough, pretty self-explanatory stuff, and at first, I thought all you needed was an IP Address to connect.
(((See, I'm actually really ignorant when it comes to computer stuff. )))
Anyways, turns out that...
"There must be a ProRat server running on the target PC otherwise you cannot connect."
Anyone know how to get a server onto another computer? Even if I have to download it manually from the "victim" computer, that'll work because both computers are mine. This is probably some really obvious question, but like I said, I'm an ignorant fourteen year old.
Thanks in advance,
ben

Picasa + codec problem
Date: 03/17/06
Keywords: google
Hi,
Anyone can tell me how picasa 2 (the one from google) got anything to do with video codecs? I installed ace mega codec pack (player install, not all codecs) on my computer. After that I can't get my picasa open. It just crashes with windows send/dont send error report. If I uninstall Ace mega codec pack, it works just fine. Ok so, how I know which codec is doing this? Ace Mega codec pack has like million codecs and I'm not very willing to try them all one at the time. I'm getting tired of constant install/uninstall thing everytime I want to watch a movie or watch pictures. This problem is driving me nuts! Anyone know better codec pack than Ace? Thanks guys and girls.

Weird sounds (I think..)
Date: 03/14/06
Keywords: no keywords
I got a new Alienware PC for Xmas and it works great. Games like HL2 and UT2k4 that used to bog down my old PC run like a dream now. Anyways these machines aren't known for their "quietness." I didn't opt for the extra quiet cooling systems so basically I have about 4 fans running in the machine. I don't mind the extra noise, but recently I think the computer has been making more of a grinding sound, or like a low-level "grrr" sound. It doesn't do this all the time, but it comes and goes often. Its not like a loud grinding noise like you'd hear if your fan was screwed up or something was vibrating against the side constantly. I can't tell where this is coming from. It sounds like it is coming from the back of the computer, either near the fan or the power supply. The computer still runs fine, but I don't want to just ignore this if this is a major issue and then one day my computer explodes or does whatever that screws up my hardware (I only have a 1-year warranty, although I may upgrade that since I have more money now.) Does this sound familiar to anyone? Should I be really concerned or is this like a "don't worry unless the machine starts malfunctioning"? In case it helps here are the system specs:
AMD Athlon X2 4400+
1 GB RAM
250GB HD
Nvidia GeForce 7800GT
AC'97 7.1 Built in Sound Card
Thanks.

Trouble Viewing QuickTime Movies embedded into PDF
Date: 03/14/06
Keywords: software, browser, html, web, google
Edited for solution
It's been forever and a day since I've been able to view any of the tutorials from this site -- http://tutorials.stuartlittlephotography.co.uk/
Apparently I'm not the only one, so he sent out an email the other day --
Removing White Backgrounds
Hi There,
In the past 2 weeks I have been experimenting with different ways of delivering the weekly tutorial, because depending on what computer set up you have, you either get to watch the tutorial or you don't. "I have been listening to your comments you know" :)
So I have come up with a way of embedding the normal Quicktime video into a pdf and using that pdf as a container for delivery through your browser. The pdf version has been tested with users like yourself this week on Internet Explorer, Mozilla & Safari web browsers and no problems so far.
Instructions
You will need to have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader 7. Its free and you can get it by clicking on the link below or copying and pasting the url into your web browser.
Get Adobe Reader
Click or Copy & Paste into Browser.
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Once you have Acrobat installed you can then go to the tutorials page as normal.
When you click on the "View Here" link, a blank browser page will appear and the pdf will start to download. It is 10.48mb in size and will take about 2.5 min's to download.
Once you can view the page in the browser you will then be able to "save a copy" to your desktop and view offline for as long as you want.
Finally, there is an option in Acrobat to change the view in %. The video tutorial is best viewed at 75% rather than the default 100%. If you have any problems then please email me by return.
This method of pdf delivery has been tested this week, but I am very keen to know what you think of it?
Removing White Backgrounds
This episode shows you how to remove a subject from its white background and blend with another image.
Click or Copy & Paste into Browser.
http://tutorials.stuartlittlephotography.co.uk/
I downloaded the tutorial. I have Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 and Quicktime 7 but when I tried to
view it, I got the error "The media requires an additional player. Please click 'Get Media Player' to download the correct media player. To play the media, you will need to close and restart the application once the player installation is complete." When I click 'Get Media Player' it takes me to the Apple site and I download Itunes and Quicktime 7, which I already have. So, I uninstalled QuickTime 7 and installed 6.5.2. Now I can get past that initial error, but I am back to hearing audio and no video. I get this error "QuickTime is missing software required to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server."
I can't seem to find anything helpful with google. Can someone please help me alleviate my frustration?
Cheers!!
The solution
was so easy once I found out. In Adobe Reader, there is an option to check for new updates. When I clicked this, I received a message that there were no new updates. Googling the right question brought me to an actual Adobe page that had a link to some updates. (Not sure why the program didn't find these). I updated my Adobe Reader to 7.0.5 and now have no troubles viewing the movie.
I found this solution on this page -- http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/331566.html

I saw on the info page a few links to anti-spyware programs. I've downloaded the SpyWare Doctor and ran the program, but in order to erase the infections, I have to order the program. Are any of the ones listed free, or do they all require you to pay before fixing your puter?
Thanks.

image blocking
Date: 03/10/06
Keywords: linux
For various reasons I am trying to block images from specific servers. My solution so far has been to amend /etc/hosts and redirect all traffic to those servers to 127.0.0.1
This has worked OK when the images are located at http://bad_server.com/image.jpg, however several of the images use sub-domains. Pictures from sub-domain.bad_server.com/image.jpg are getting through. I've tried adding the entry *.bad_server.com and just bad_server.com but nothing seems to work, any ideas?
(using a mac btw, so linux/unix solutions should work too.)
[.EDIT] I tried the servers IP too. still no good.
oh yes, and there's an unknown quantity of subdomains, I want to block them all, otherwise it would be nice and simple...
[.Edit] Fixed, talk about trying to do things the hard way...

Uncapping?
Date: 03/08/06
Keywords: web, google
So I actually have questions along the lines of my cable modem. It's a Scientific Atlanta WebStar (BrightHosue service), and after looking into some research on my Cable box (to TV) I just decided to google my modem as well, and saw a few forums that mentioned uncapping. Now, I got the jist of what it is... I think. In a nutshell, it's deleting/enlarging the restrictions of the modem, right?
I don't want to know how to do this, as I think it's illegal. But why would it be illegal? Someone 'stealing' bandwidth? Has anyone ever done this? Guess I'm just curious about it. Thanks.

Let them eat cake(d on thermal compound)
Date: 03/08/06
Keywords: no keywords
So I was working on this guys computer... it sounded like a small child getting sucked in to a jet engine every time you turned it on. Woot, time for new heatsink/fan and case fans. So I pop off the old bugger, and lookee what I found:
Kind of amazing that he managed to get the thermal compound everywhere EXCEPT the die. He's lucky the thing didn't fry.
What's the craziest thing you've ever seen inside a computer case?
Another one that comes to mind... we popped the case off the front of a PC, and the fan holes in the front were COVERED in cat hair. I mean, you couldn't tell holes were supposed to be there. It looked like someone had shaved a cat and then shoved its hair in the front of the case. I'm not kidding when I say there was enough in there to make a small sweater. Thank god we have an air compressor here.

Serial Cables, Null Modems and Debugging
Date: 03/06/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi, all. I have a serial cable that I've been using for kernel debugging purposes. It has black ends and two 9-pin female ends. This works great. However, recently I ran into an issue where I needed to move one of my machines so now my 6' cable won't reach the other machine. I was thinking this is just a typical null modem cable and I should be able to extend it with another one, but this isn't working for me. The other cable I found actually says 'Null Modem' on it, but has blue ends, one 9-pin male and one 9-pin female. I hook these up together, plug them into the machines, and the machines do not communicate with each other.
Can someone explain to me what I'm not understanding about these cables? Is it not possible to hook two Null Modem cables together? Why does one of my cables have black ends and one have blue? Just style or part of a spec? When I speak of "ends", I mean the pieces of plastic at the very ends around the pin holes. The cable itself is all beige. Thanks for any insight you can provide to help me get this working.

Tracing system bootup
Date: 03/06/06
Keywords: no keywords
I wrote a while back about my gf's laptop woes. I installed an extra 256 RAM in the machine and NOTHING happened. I also noticed that the computer takes a LOOOONG time to boot up. I mean it takes over two minutes to boot up. I want to be able to diagnose where the bottleneck is. I have Bootvis and traced a boot-up, but I have no idea what the results mean. All I could tell is that there's a long stretch of 100% CPU usage with no progress. Are there any diagnosis tools or monitors I could use that could like break down every startup driver/system thing, similar to the safe mode startup? I want all the system stuff to load up, because a fast safe-boot doesn't help me much. I think diagnosing this would also help me tackle the sluggish performance the computer is having. I don't think my GF is going to be up for a format/clean install to fix her performance. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
BTW I've already done the regular optimization stuff (AV Scan, Defrag, Ad-Scan, etc)
