see i dont know what happened
this weekend i was playing World Of Warcraft and
there started a pretty bad storm outside...
now i just kept playing because i am
a huge nerd...
well i just kept playing and in less than a minute
the storm knocked out my power so i shut down...
when i started back up my connections were all messed up so i..
1: Unplugged/ Replugged all connections to modem
2: Repaired the connection
3: Reset the router
4: Restarted...
now my problem is this,
i can go on World Of Warcraft, AIM, and my torrent program
so i obviously have an internet connection there
but my browsers will not work...
i have Firefox and IE (which i never use)
but neither will load a page...
if anyone here knows why this is and how i can fix it it
would be greatly appreciated because
im completely baffled to why this is happening..
Thanks in advance

Case/Project Based Time Management Software
Date: 08/08/05
Keywords: software
Does anyone know of any free (as in beer, preferably as in speech (i.e. Open Source) as well) software to handle time sheeting in a multi project/case environment? Basically what we need is something that will allow people to set up tasks and then log time against it so we can extract reports.
Thanks.
Edit to add
I thought I'd better give a more detailed description of what we're looking for.
It for a trade union office where we have a number of shopstewards (over 100) who work on cases on behalf of members. Cases broadly divide into Representations (representing members individually in displinary procedures, grievence procedures &c or assisting another steward in such tasks), Consultations (not representing any particular member but negotiating on behalf of the members as a group or a subset (e.g. everyone in a particular department) with management) or Administration (internal meetings, training &c). Each case involves a number of tasks such as meetings, preparing documents, training sessions &c. What we're looking for is somethng that will allow each steward to record their time against tasks in different cases so that we can report on how much time a particular steward has spent on union tasks, how much time as been spent on particular sorts of cases (e.g. grievences relating to racial harrassment, consultations on departmental restructuring &c) and whatever else we need to know about so that we can ensure that our time is being used effectively.

On registering - personal - domains & providing the info for the Whois databases...
It seems requirements for up-to-date, accurate contact info can make some people apprehensive.
What're some of the practices y'all use?
E.g. just the correct home address/tel, Whois guard services, incorporation, nonsense/incorrect info (riskier) etc.
Thanks.

I'm thinking about switching over to Thunderbird from Outlook Express since I already have Firefox as my default browser. Is that a good thing to do or does it not matter which one I use? Thanks in advance.

web hosting with VPS

Keywords: web, linux, hosting, google
So i'm in the market for getting VPS web hosting. I've found westhost, which seems to have a great deal going on. Have any of you heard of them, used them, or have horror stories about them? I've googled a bit for information about them, but as always, first-hand experience is more reliable.
Any other VPS recommendations if you have it would be great.

Red Hat Linux 8.0

Keywords: linux
I have a client with Red Hat Linux 8.0 as a file server; here are my questions:
1. I need a program that will sync the time with a time server on the internet.
2. Is there a native program that Linux uses for tape backups? If so, what is it?
Thanks

EFS Encryption
Date: 08/02/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have an external hard drive with quite a considerable amount of memory that is encrypted with Windows XP EFS Encryption. The original OS that it was encrypted under has been completely formatted. Therefore, I am now left with a bunch of unusable encrypted files on this external drive. The files are important to me, but as I being a college student don't have the sufficient funds to take it to a data mining company.
My question is: How, if at all possible, can I try to decrypt these files. I do not have the original OS on the computer, but I do still have the computer that the files were encrypted on. My research across the net comes up with programs that can dig for EFS Encryption Keys on the OS, but these don't generally work because they don't exist anymore. What I'm assuming, is that there is a way to decrypt the files with a program although it may be tedious and time consuming. I currently have two computers both about 1.5 Ghz and 512 DDR Ram.
Any relevant information would be greatly appreciated.

DMA error
Date: 08/02/05
Keywords: no keywords
Folks,
I recently started getting the odd error:
dma_intr: error = 0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC}
dma_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReadySeekComplete Error}
I did some googling and descovered that this is most likely either a) my disk about to crash, b) my motherboard about to fry, c) my controller not entirely supported.
The latter two seem most likely since it occured on both drives.
I have since recompiled the kernel to exclude the udma driver and the problem seems to have stopped occuring. What I would like to know however is if these errors will have resulted in data loss or if the driver would have attempted to write the data again.
This is particularly important since the machine has been running for about a day with this kernel and I only noticed this when attempting to diagnose another problem...
Thoughts?

Programming (part two)
Date: 07/31/05
Keywords: php, programming, software, css, html, xml, database, asp, sql, java, security, web
A few weeks ago, I asked about programming languages and which I should learn, and
your reaction had me thinking that I could have offered more info about what I hoped
to do with computers. My request was so vague that I can see why you found it difficult
to reply. Perhaps this time I'll do better.
To make things easier, I'm providing a list of what I want to do, and I ask you if you know
what languages or applications I should consider in order to fulfill my technological goals.
I'd like to:
- build web pages
- provide internet security for large & small clients
- make computer games
- build my own OS from scratch (a big task, I know)
- create, edit, download, and manipulate multi-media images and files
- develop application software
- build and manage my own server
- develop databases
- get a general feel for everything else, in case I ever need it
So my current list of stuff I wish to learn now includes:
- Java
- Java Script
- Perl
- C, C+, & C++
- PHP
- SQL
- CSS
- HTML
- XML
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Flash & Dreamweaver
- .Net (VB.net, ASP.net, C#)
- CGI
If you know anything about the above, feel free to post:
What are each of the above
used for? How did it come out? Are any of them similar or used for similar tasks?
Etc., etc., etc.
Finally, I was told to learn some Assembly language, but unless I am mistaken,
I think I learned that already. If someone could give me a rundown on what it is, I could
be sure if its what I think it is. I think I learned 8086 in my day (came with a card, too),
so all I have to do is review it I think.
Your help and suggestions are welcome and I thank you in advance for your time.

Hello!
There's a new folksonomy software project - MyProgs.net.
You can store there list of programs you use, but the real point is something much more interesting:
You can easily find new / interesting / popular software in various categories, track after specific categories and many other things, like always knowing when your friend or colleague found another interesting program.
For example, here is my list: MyProgs.net/kuchin
There is also RSS support :)

Hey all you geeks, I'm moving soon and dumping a lot of my computer crap that I've been collecting. ie Dell QuietKey keyboards, memory and motherboards. Currently they end in 22 hours, but I'm sure I'll be putting some more stuff as soon as I find it while packing, so keep checking for good deals. Hell, let me know if you want something and I'll end the auction for ya. (unless someone already bid on it.)
I know this may not be allowed to post here (I'm lazy and don't want to search the community) just politely let me know, I'll remove the post.
