  2. Some Questions...

    Date: 03/17/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web

    Hi everyone. By reading through some posts here the past couple weeks, and some replys to my posts, I now have a few questions for everyone:

    1. Tables: Why should I stop using them? I've always though Tables were the bread & butter of web design. Part of the reason I think this is because I was pretty much taught to think that way when I was in school for my associates degree. I admit, the school was terrible, but anyway... that's what I was taught. I've seen people on here talk about CSS doing everything tables can... or using DIV tags to do it, and so on. I admit, I know nothing about DIV tags, or what they do... and I know very little CSS... only the fun stuff like link styles and scroll bar colors. Any light shed on this question would be helpful.

    2. CSS: Used for the entire website? Just wondering what the benefits are to using CSS for your entire site, instead of HTML.

    3. IFRAMES: Why are they so bad? I use them all the time, they are easy to use, and I like 'em. In a previous post someone replied that search engines can't search into them if they are on your site... so I recognize that problem... but what else is there? I'd like to hear some more downsides and upsides. Another person recommended I use DIV tags to do IFRAMES job. I don't know how to do this. Can anyone link me to a little DIV tutorial?

    Thats all for now I guess. Thanks in advance for replies!

    I am only learning so sue me...

    I grabbed a book on CSS so I could make groupings of my pages look simalar and learn more coding stuffs... *hates college classes with a passion*

    Anyhow.

    http://www.soulrequiem.com/studio.css

    That's what I have

    http://www.soulrequiem.com/main.html

    that's what it does...and yes I'm aware its not the index page...

    http://www.soulrequiem.com/index.html

    I'm probably not going to put the CSS on my index page. Unless I design a specific one for JUST that page and for my subdomain splash intros. Then maybe.

    I've been having problems getting the font sizes to adjust properly. I set it to 16 in one spot and the font remained the same size O.O

    Well....I'm sure You'll all spot the errors.

    For some reason the navigation and text are off kilt in Firefox (everything works fine in IExplore). What can I do to remedy the problem?

    If it has to do with CSS the file is http://www.thecrosbys.net/style.css. Help!

    Does it look strange in any other browswer?

    Is there a website where I can learn more about streamlining websites across all browsers?

  6. so here's my present quandry....

    Date: 03/18/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html

    I'm working on creating a template for a site in XHTML. Now, the template is XHTML compliant, & works beautifully in Safari on a Mac. However :

    in IE & Firefox, the background colors don't show up.
    in IE, my background image for the main table doesn't show up
    in IE, my flash animations don't load
    in firefox, my CSS placement is off.

    I've used CSS in a limited capacity in the past, & this is my first crack at a fully compliant XHTML site. any hints you guys can offer would be spiffy.

  7. css / div / php / firefox issues.

    Date: 03/19/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, browser, css, web

    HI there. I'm having major troubles, and headaches, over a new layout I want for my website.

    Pure css gave me a nightmare so I decided to use PHP includes, and that way have my site easier to overhaul each time I got bored.
    Now, I've not had anything to do with PHP before, and rather than encode each piece by hand, I just made my headers, and footers, and renamed the content of each page whatever.php
    (please don't point and laugh at me, I have no idea what I'm doing with PHP ...)

    My test page shows up perfectly in IE, but there is only a small space for the menu in Firefox.
    I have tried everything from resizing divs, taking divs out, etc etc and nothing has worked.

    I want a site with no tables, and no frames that is cross-browser compatible.

    Test page is here:
    http://www.tehsheepie.com/test/donna.php

    css here:
    http://www.tehsheepie.com/test/stylesheet.css

    Header.php reads as such:

    I'm going to lose my mind soon, the whole idea of me forsaking my beloved frames layout was to become more user-friendly.
    What the heck am I doing wrong? :(
    Any suggestions are muchly appreciated.
    I use Firefox myself, and I'd hate to have to force people to view my page in IE ...

  8. Hello & Help?

    Date: 03/22/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, web

    Hi everyone, this my first post here so if this is a redundent question etc. I apologize in advance.

    I've be designing web sites for a little bit now (Digital Video is my true specialty though), however it's been mostly from the "artistic" standpoint, thus I'm playing catch-up now to learn things like CSS etc. so the websites I work with are functional as well as pretty!

    A client I'm woring with now wants me to redesign his site which in the end is 50+ pages. So, I was wondering what would be the easiest/best way to make a basic page layout and only have to update one file (instead of 50) to change links and or navigation. I thought this maybe could be done with and external CSS however it seems like that deals more with text etc. and not tables. Again sorry if this is too newbie, and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  9. Background Image

    Date: 03/25/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: css

    How in the world do you set Firefox up to display my own image on the toolbars? I followed this exactly, but it isn't working. The image file is in the same place as the userChrome.css file as well, but I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

    I had it set up ages ago, but I can't seem to remember how I did it.

    Anyone have any ideas? I'm ready to chuck this thing out the window.

    Date: 03/28/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html

    I have been using IE since like it first came out. I just downloaded FireFox and my background image won't load in my home page. I need someone who had knowledge of HTML and FireFox to assist me with this.

    Edit: I changed the CSS on all my pages. Took a couple hours... 1 1/2 I guess... but now everything loads perfectly in both IE and Firefox. :) Thanks for your time.

  11. Okay quick question here.

    Date: 03/28/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

    Okay, I have typed this out a few times and haven't been able to make sense of what I was typing, so I'll try this one last time.

    I am trying to understand how to better implement the use of DIVs. Being that they (from what I have read) are very accessible friendly and very easily manipulated through CSS.

    I'm a Dreamweaver junkie and have found that I use TABLES mostly because of their ease of creation. However, they are not always easy to use. So my question is this...

    Is there a way to use and edit DIV as easily as you can TABLES in Dreamweaver?

    I think if I found an answer to that very question I would start using DIVs more and therefore I would hopefully teach myself to better understand CSS and it power.

    Thank you kindly to you wizzards of web wonders!

  12. Help n such =\

    Date: 03/29/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css

    quirky-ness.com/school/onelinenews

    Alrighty, age old problem: page works fine in IE (and Avant) but not in Firefox, Opera or Netscape. This was my first real venture into using DIVs, SPANs and more CSS intead of tables and such. So things don't line up the same in the other browsers.
    So um yeah, any suggestions to remedy that would be grand. I'm also looking for a critique of the code since it would be nice to be doing this div thing right, and any comments design-wise would be cool too (for those who can see it right...).
    I also get an error thing in IE apparantly in line 2 char 1 but... that's just a blank space...

  13. oh man this is rich!

    Date: 03/29/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web, hosting

    So I left my old job a while ago, and since then a slew of people have "left". The bookkeeper (she was cool), the personnel/training/business relations director (another cool lady) and a few other people. That is not cool, but what the heck right? The public website (which should not be hard for you to figure out who I worked for or just ask) was something they had on the drawing board for what sounds like years; I got up an running. Me and my two hands. They had a graphic designer who had the design all ready made but made it work. I also took the intranet server and did something with it. Put documents on-line, created a calender (by hand), and had some nice things (like birthdays and anniversaries) on the main page. We were told by corp that they wanted out of the hosting business and we needed to move the public site to a new host. No problem, I back it up to a CD and hand it to the consultants since they did hosting also (side note, when ever consultants get involved, you are gonna get fired, it might take a while but it will happen). So for shits and grins I go look and see if the public site has had any updates, since when I was there getting content was like pulling teeth, managementwas too busy micro-managing to give content. The thing is that the public site (as of mins ago) had the html (but no images or css) of the intranet site; and corporate is still hosting it (netcraft & netsol confirm it). Thats just rich.

  14. Firefox extensions I use - and other info

    Date: 03/30/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, css, html, xml, java, web

    Since Mozilla Suite is no longer being developed, and Firefox is where everything is going, I decided it was time for me to make the jump. In the process I picked up a number of extensions and thought I'd document them in one place.

    AniDisable - control animated gifs
    Checky - links to validation services for XHTML, XML, CSS, etc.
    ChromEdit - profile editor
    ColorZilla - allows you to pick up a color from any element in the browser
    Disable Targets For Downloads - prevents empty windows/tabs when you click a binary link
    EditCSS - make realtime tweaks to a pages CSS
    FoxyTunes - control your media player (iTunes, WinAmp, etc) from the browser chrome
    Html Validator (based on Tidy) - validate HTML right in the browser, locally
    I must not fear! - OK, so this just adds the line from Dune to the Tools menu. I like it. ;-)
    ieview - open the current page in ie, useful for development testing
    Image Zoom - pretty much what it sounds like
    JavaScript Debugger - what it says
    Linkification - makes plaintext URLs links
    Linky - adds options for handling links
    Longdesc - let's you view the longdesc attribute on images
    miniT (drag+indicator) - drag tabs to reorder
    Preferential - advanced preferences editor
    Tabbrowser Preferences - provides a UI for editing hidden tab preferences
    TinyUrl Creator - easily create a TinyURL from the current page
    User Agent Switcher - lets you mimic other user agents
    View Cookies - adds a tab to Page Info showing the cookies set by the page
    Web Developer - adds a toolbar with web development tools

    Anyone want to suggest something I should check out that I missed?

    I also find this most useful - there are UIs in Firefox that aren't accessible. The chrome is there from the Suite, but the 'simplified' UI of FF has removed the links to the sub-elements: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dev_:_FireFox_Chrome_URLs

    For example: chrome://pippki/content/pref-ssl.xul - which also brings you here: chrome://pippki/content/pref-ciphers.xul - I like to disable weak ciphers.

    Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: css, spam

    Matt Mullenweg's response to the WordPress - search engine spam scandal:

    The articles hosted content thing was just a short-term experiment, an interesting idea (original and relevant Wikipedia-type content on the site) that was badly implemented. As an experiment it could have been conducted much better than it was. The content should have been more topical to WP issue, I should have kept up with the content that was going up, the links should have never had the overflow CSS, and I should have discussed it with more people. Each was a mistake and they combined badly - I'm very sorry.

    I take full responsibilty for how it was implemented. It was wrong, and it wasn't thought through

  16. Probably a stupid question. . .

    Date: 04/05/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css

    I have a question that I've been dying to know forever. How do you make a site like this, where the header pic/links stay stationary at the top, and the content appears below it without the header pic/links refreshing? I know it can't be a frameset, because the entire page will automatically scroll down, not just the frame in which the content overflows. I'm also pretty sure it's not iframe.

    If someone could tell me how this is done and/or point me in the direction of a tutorial that could, I would be eternally grateful.

    ETA: Erm, I think I phrased my question a bit wrong. I don't want the header/links to always remain at the top of the screen, like a floating menu or anything like that. What I meant was more of how I can divide the layout into two main portions, where the top portion (the image map or what have you) never reloads, but the bottom portion displays the content? Essentially like a frameset, but without the dozens of setbacks that a frameset has? Is this all just a matter of laying it out in CSS properly, or is the some behind-the-scenes PHP work going on as well? Sorry for the confusion.

  17. Calling all IE quirks experts and CSS gurus...

    Date: 04/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html

    Got myself a bit of a problem, and it's had the whole office banging our heads on the desk in frustration.

    No matter what we do, we can't make Internet Explorer honour our requests to clear the boxes. If you take a look in Firefox or another CSS compliant browser, it does precisely what it's supposed to - after one box finishes on one side, the next box appears on the other side, as both have clear: left / clear: right (as appropriate), and the text flows straight down the middle, moving where it's supposed to. However, no matter what we do, IE completely ignores the clears, and slaps them next to each other. Suffice to say it's getting rather annoying!

    Anyone got any ideas / workarounds for IE being crap? We've been crawling the 'net to no avail on this one.

  18. PHP, mod_rewrite and header() - This is a good one.

    Date: 04/08/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, browser, css, html, web, apache

    I'm trying to use mod_rewrite to intercept all requests made to my web server and route them to a php file (index.php) which then parses the request and does what it can to serve the appropriate page. I'm doing this in an effort to use meaningful URLS as opposed to query strings.

    I have everything about half-working but I can't send headers from index.php, which is important because not only do I need to be able to generate 404 errors, but the files that will be included by index.php need to set their own headers (content-type, content-language).

    These are the lines I'm using in .htaccess for mod_rewrite:

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule index.php$ - [L]
    RewriteRule !\.(jpg|gif|css)$ /index.php [L]

    And this is the code I'm using in index.php that's causing a problem:
    if ($url_array[0] == 'poems') { // POEMS SUBDIRECTORY
    	require('lists.php'); // GET LISTS
    	$get = 'poems';
    	if (array_search($url_array[1], $poem_list)) {
    		$which = $url_array[1];
    		include('get.php');
    	}
    	else {
    		if (!headers_sent()) {
    			header('HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found');
    		}
    	}
    }
    else {
    	if (!headers_sent()) {
    		header('HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found');
    	}
    }

    As you can see, I'm checking to see if headers have been sent before trying to set them, but they don't seem to have been. Whenever I try to set a status header with the syntax HTTP/1.1 XXX (description) an internal server error occurs. I have been able to set status using the header Status: 404, but rather than the standard 404 error page appearing a blank HTML document is served to the browser.

    Apache version is 1.3.19 running on Windows 98. PHP version is 4.2.3 running as a cgi.

    Any help would be much appreciated, I'm pretty far out of my depth with changing the way Apache works.

  19. :hover broken in IE

    Date: 04/09/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, java, web, seo

    i tried to redesign my website today and started to use a lot of :hover elements in my css to make my TDs borders highlight when you hover over them
    of course, i designed it all in mozilla firefox, so as soon as i tried it in IE it broke :(

    i spent about an hour googling for helpful websites, and all i've come up with is javascript code to put in the td mouseOver tag

    is there a better or easier way to make IE work with :hover in CSS?
    if not, what is the best way of getting round this lack of :hover support in IE?

    Date: 04/15/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html, web, google

    I was just reading this explanation on google maps and thought this quote was interesting:

    "I also think it bears noting that Google is pulling out all the stops to build rich web apps, no matter how weirdly they have to hack the browser to make them go. And I strongly believe that this is a trend that is here to stay -- XHTML Strict/CSS/etc be damned. At the end of the day, what really matters to users is compelling apps that let them get their work done quickly."
