1. Carpool.NET

Date: 07/12/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: software, technology, ebay

The benefits of carpooling are obvious, and I would like to highlight that we have the technology to enhance participation.

I see two fundamental challenges with carpooling:
    1) Trust: How do I know this guy will actually pick me up, be on time, etc?
    2) Knowledge of other local commuters

    Implementing #1:
Before E-bay, it would be considered inconcievable that consumers could rate each other and provide services directly without mediation.
Yes, e-bay adds some mediation but only minimally to resolve financial disputes. (Ebay essentially provides the sidewalk in the global yard sale.) Allowing fellow commuters to rate each others' availability and reliability well suites the trust issue.
The Open Source community could easily build such a rating system.

    Implementing #2:
Users provide frequent routes, and custom software matches possible local participants.
I know this software exists in algorithm communities, since students frequently write network traversal simulation software.

I theorize that this can ONLY be done Open Source since as privitazation means paying somewhere.
People will not feel comfortable providing home addresses etc to a private body since that equates to selling your identity.
(Regardless of what any Privacy/End User agreement says).

    Thoughts?

  6. problem with msn messenger

Date: 08/30/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, ebay

i've got a little problem with msn. up until last night everything worked fine. i usually use msn explorer as opposed to internet explorer too, and have never had any problems.
so last night i signed in for five minutes, and then signed out, everything's fine. a little while later my brother goes to use it and suddenly it's not working and i'm receiving this pop up: Signing in to MSN Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. 800b0001.

i tried to sign in a few more times later and i got this message again, along with another pop up that said something along the lines of it being a problem cause by either theirs or my connection.

so i couldn't log into msn explorer, and instead went to internet explorer. which worked, except when signing into hotmail, the main page would show up fine but as soon as i tried to log in, i got a cannot find server page.
the only other site this happened with was eBay. everything else was fine.

we rang our interent providery person and they told us to do a few things, none of which worked. i ended up getting mozilla firefox at the advice of the help person.
so now i can log into hotmail and what not, but msn is still not working. i uninstalled the version we have and installed it again via the website, but it seems to be worse/slower than the old one. gah.

i know of at least one other person this is happening to.

so is it msn that's screwy or is my computer munted?

    thanks, Haylor.

  10. Fair price for second hand hardware

Date: 09/18/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: google, ebay

Hi, I've been looking to sell my Samsung SyncMaster 700p Plus. I've googled around a bit and only found a few prices (presumably second or nth hand) that don't seem to match up. I found prices ranging from a few dollars (ebay) up through around 300 or 400 then right up to 800 (these are USD figure, I'm actually Australian. I can use currency conversion, though - go me!). It doesn't seem to be listed on the Samsung site, but I only checked the USA and Australian archives.

If anyone knows of a place to get a good (free) quote for old hardware, I'd love to know. If this isn't an appropriate place to ask, also let me know. Finally, if anyone is interested in buying then I'm sorry, but I've already got the buyer, I just need a good price - feel free to offer what you think you would be prepared to pay, though.

    Thanks in advance

  12. More Support for Mozilla Firefox at eBay

Date: 10/04/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, microsoft, ebay

Many e-Bay sellers are expressing their frustration at e-Bay's lopsided web design in favor of MS Internet Explorer. According to yesterday's mozillaZine post; AuctionBytes.com , an on-line news site, is reporting that some eBay sellers have started a petition to persuade the auction heavyweight to support Mozilla Firefox and other alternative browsers. According to the article, some features on the eBay Sell Your Item page are optimised for Microsoft Internet Explorer and do not work correctly in Firefox and other browsers. Furthermore, there is no Firefox version of eBay Toolbar, which is currently only available for Internet Explorer on Windows.

The petition, entitled eBay to provide alternative browser support, was created by Jared McAteer and has 1,189 signatures at the time of writing. Signers are required to provide a name and email address.

"It should be noted that sellers can use Firefox to auction items on eBay but the experience is not as smooth and refined as it is with Internet Explorer. Not all of the site is Mozilla-hostile: in May, eBay improved its Picture Manager tool to add support for Firefox. In addition, eBay is one of the default search engines in the Firefox Search Bar, which we presume raises revenue for the Mozilla Foundation."

If you feel e-Bay has a faulty business policy, kindly click here to sign a petition requesting e-Bay to provide further support to other web browsers besides IE.

  13. Wireless network problem

Date: 10/07/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, ebay

I'm having a bit of difficulty with the wireless network I set up recently. I bought a new Netgear router on eBay last week and was able to set it up to my iMac and cable modem successfully -- until today, my laptop was picking up the signal and I was able to connect to the wireless network. However, I had reason to disconnect the router today, just for a couple of hours, and when I hooked everything up again, it wouldn't work. I have been trying to fix it for a couple of hours. The laptop is picking up the signal, and says it is connected, but it won't let me view any webpages or connect to MSN, etc. An MSN error message mentioned something about DNS servers (?) perhaps not being defined. I can't surf the internet on my iMac while the router is connected, either. I can only use the 'net if I disconnect the router and connect the modem directly to the computer.

Also, the router was visibly brand new in the box, unused, however there were no instructions. When I set it up at first, I just plugged it in and I was automatically taken to the Netgear webpage where it set everything up for me. I don't know how to get back to this page, though, if that's what I need to do. I'm getting very frustrated! Any help would be much appreciated.

Date: 11/12/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: ebay

I used Knoppix to recover Laptop computer they "never backed up".
LJ Cut because I put 3 photos in the post.

Some one at work has a Laptop computer they never backed up.
They traveled 1000 miles to give a presentation, using the laptop…
The hard drive got fried and all there photos and movies, lectures were on it.

I told them to let me try to recover the stuff.
I tried but no luck the drive was “dead“ worked 3 days but no way.
I bought 2 matching drives like the “dead“ drive ( 20GB IBM IDE.) on eBay.
    .
    Image hosted by TinyPic.com
    .
I tried moving the circuit boards a few times, some times the board fails.
I moved the disk platters from "bad drive" to a working drive and recovered all most all the data.
Then practiced a lot , moving platters in and out of one drive.
Not “all” data because the old drive has bad sectors and bad spots…
I first practiced on 2 old 160 Meg drives (cost 2 dollars each) then practiced on
a “dead“ drive identical to the bad one.
Cost = 7 dollars , then did it for real….took a good hard drive apart
(cost 32 dollars) and put the hard drive disk platters from the “dead“ drive..

I made a clean "room" on my desk and used T5 to T 9 star /torrex drivers and snap ring tools to disassemble the drives. I got 2 160 Meg drives to take part and move the platters first.
put some files on one and then see it the cables, BIOS, computer and drives all worked together.
so when I did it "for real" I would know it worked once.

Then booted with Knoppix 3.9 and coped files to my 10 Gig slave drive,
then from the slave to my 200 Gig File server…now I made Cds with the files …
Make the target drive fat 32 or ext2 /ext3 , not NTFS, you cant relibly write to NTFS.
I used Knoppix to copy the files.
The GUI part, I needed to see the file structure.
I made 3 passes before the drive started making noise..
Now making 6 or 8 Cds with the files to give them the files.
I am dancing…..used Knoppix and my 200 Gig File server made w *.nix floppy.
Computer Forensics is a hobby for now, some day I will do Forensic Analysis for real....
