Weird emails generated from php contact form
Date: 05/04/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, browser, security, web, google
I'm pretty new to php, and this may be the dumbest question ever asked, but it's freaking me out.
I have a contact form on a website in php and it works perfectly fine. Once in a while, however, I will get 5-6 emails at once, all sent from the form, with weird email addresses (i.e. with the domain name of my site) that fill in all fields with the email address and the message is some sort of garbled version of a story by Hans Christian Andersen -- (I only know this because I googled the lines).
I have the form automatically send me an email that fills in field so that I get an email like the following if someone has an issue with the website:
Someone has a website issue.
A user, $name, has an issue on the page $url
The issue is: $message
They are using $browser as a web browser and when asked if they would like a follow-up they said $followup.
Their email address is $email
But I will sometimes get emails like the following:
Someone has a website issue.
A user, blood7007@mydomain.com, has an issue on the page et

The issue is: blood7007@mydomain.com.
They are using as a web browser and when asked if they would like a follow-up they said blood7007@mydomain.com.
Their email address is blood7007@mydomain.com.
All of the emails are also blank carbon copying to the same address, the aol one as listed above.
So, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how and why these are sent, if it's a security issue, etc... and what I should have in place to prevent it, if it's possible.

Inline mp3-playing for Thunderbird
Date: 05/04/06
(Mozilla) Keywords: rss, google
I have seen both a greasmonkey script (currently installed) and a bookmarklet (used previously) that place a "Play" icon next to any mp3 on a page in Firefox. (For more information on the bookmarklet, google for "playtagger" by del.icio.us)
I subscribe to a few mp3-blogs via RSS in my Thunderbird, and was wondering if there are any similar plugins, extensions, or workarounds to do the same thing in Thunderbird.

Webloc/url conversion
Date: 05/15/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: web, google
Okay, I tried Google, and other lj communities, now I'm hoping you can help me.
I was living a roommate who had a Mac. (OS X G5?). I had many, many files stored on it. The roomie moved out, and eventually put all those files onto a DVD disk. Now I have a PC. I was able to successfully transfer most of the data (images, iTunes, text, etc,) onto my computer.
BUT...
All the internet links I had saved on the Mac are weblocs, and I can't open them on my pc. I tried to find ways to convert them, but all the info I found was for people who had Macs, and wanted to work offline, and much of the "help" was in technospeak, and I was lost. :/
Is there a way to exract the url's from the weblocs, without using a Mac? (I no longer have access to one!) Thank-you in advance!

Odd Feelings about IM's
Date: 05/20/06
(Opera Browser) Keywords: yahoo, google
This is off-topic, but I figured that people here would know a thing or two about IM's as well...
How come whenever I'm looking for a replacement for a 3rd party IM client (like Trillian or Gaim) I always fret about what I'm going to be getting myself into? Thus far, I've been perfectly happy with 3rd party clients. But they can be somewhat spotty with their file-transfer, voice & video service.
But every time I look at ICQ, Yahoo, MSN or AIM; I always feel like I'm about to sell my soul or something. I know that I'm going to get a bunch of ads with ICQ & AIM. I think I've gotten a little spoiled with the 3rd party ad-freeness. With Yahoo I'm not looking forward to all the extra stuff I'm never going to use. And with MSN, I fear the whole 'Big Brother' thing.
They all kind of share the ads, 'big brother' & too many useless extras feel. It's the main reason I've always gone with a 3rd party. Plus I have friends on all then networks, and I can't pick just one to go with. It's kind of messed up in a way, splitting up the world like that by creating so many different IM standards that do not talk with eachother.
I've tried out a few other great programs:
Hello is an IM and a image sharing program. All encrypted so it's really safe.
Skype is a P2P Voice & Text program. Also encrypted, very safe.
Google Talk is kind of like Skype, but stripped down.
The problem with these programs is that no one really uses them, for one reason or another. I would have figured that Skype would have really taken off, but all the other IM programs are seeing how they've fallen way behind, so now they are starting to offer things that Skype has. Google Talk is very streamlined, but you have to have a Gmail account to use it, which I guess is the problem for most people getting into it. And Hello, while functioning very well as an IM program, is mostly about sharing pictures.
So, I am at a loss. All the 1st party popular IM programs feel like they are draining my soul. All the non-pop 1st party IM programs are not used enough. All of the 3rd party IM programs have too many bugs or weirdnesses in them.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'm willing to try about anything. Maybe I'm just being overly odd about this, perhaps one of the popular first party IM programs are okay. Can someone give me the low-down?
Thanks. (x-posted in my journal)

PHP, Permissions, and You
Date: 05/23/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, google
Hey all,
I have a script that generates files using the fopen($file,'w+') function to create files that may or may not already exist, and it seems to be working fine but with one small gotcha--the permissions are for whatever reason set to 644 (decimal). This isn't a huge problem except that it doesn't give me enough permissions to edit the file using ftp or ssh (i.e. I can still get at it with another php script, but I can't modify it directly).
I've tried using the chmod($file,077) command, but it's obviously disabled as it has no effect. I do not have access to the php.ini file, although I do have ssh access to my directory on the machine. (I do not have a sudo password.) I tried using the chmod command in unix, but of course I don't have high-enough permissions.
I've googled a fair amount and haven't come up with too much other than the already-mentioned and failed chmod commands and functions.
Anybody know how to get php to create a new file with more liberal permissions?
