New VS.Net file extensions
Date: 04/06/06
(C Sharp) Keywords: software, asp, sql, microsoft, google
Hi,
I'm kind of new here and wasn't sure of where to post this since it pertains to Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 itself and neither C# not ASP.Net
The project I'm working on requires me to work a lot on.pc and .pkg files (ProC and PL/SQL packages)
Now Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 recognizes neither and I spent a long time on google trying to find out how to make it treat these files like C and SQL files respectively - basically do the necessary colorization - but with no result.
I finally found the solution after looking around in my machine's registry.
-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1\Languages\File Extensions\
That's where you need to add an extra key in the registry if you need your VS to recognize new file types.
Use the value from the existing file type whose formatting you want the new file type to have.
-
Works beautifully!
Just thought I'd post it here in case anyone else finds it useful. Posted to both aspdotnet and csharp. Do let me know if this is against community rules and I'll take it off.

So JBoss Was Finally Bought by Open Source “Wannabes” and “Girly Men” Who “Doesn’t Create JACK”?
Date: 04/11/06
(Java Web) Keywords: blogging, google
I found this hilarious blog entry (in present context) by Marc Fleury against RedHat via Blogging Roller site. He adorns RedHat with some choice epithets which I am sure he wouldn't like to be reminded in present context. So understandably his blog has been sanitized but Google cache isn't so kind.
Some interesting quotes from Marc [...]

quick question: script for 'make this your homepage'?
Date: 04/11/06
(Web Development) Keywords: browser, web, google
Today my boss told me that he wanted me to add a link "Make this your homepage" on our home page with a script to make our web site the homepage.
I Googled around and it looks like it works only in IE 5 and higher. Am I wrong?
Is there a such script that works in all browsers or at least IE, Netscape, and Firefox?
I feel stupid asking because if I want to bookmark, I use my browser's Preferences and bookmarks and think that anyone should know how to do that themselves. I'm betting this little script would be in JS.

MySQL/Perl/Tomcat
Date: 04/12/06
(Apache) Keywords: mysql, database, sql, google
Hi,
I have a problem connecting to a MySQL database through a perl script (using Per DBI drvier) running on Tomcat (tried XP and server 2000). The error that I get is: "Got an error: Bad ObjectDriver config: Connection error: Can't create TCP/IP socket (10106)" Everything works fine when I run the script from command prompt (bypassing Tomcat).
I've Googled and googled all day and what I found was that a lot of people have this problem, but there don't seem to be any answers. I'm wondering if anyone ever came across a similar problem and how they've solved it.
Your help is very much appreciated!

ATTN: Mac-heads . . .
Date: 04/12/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: google
First, I'm fully aware of how to use Google and such to find information, but I'd like to know from experts (or at least those "in the know") . . .
I'm a PC enthusiast and have been an IT professional for the past eight years, but I'll soon be embarking on a new vocational path when I become an assistant pastor for my church. (Un?)fortunately, the church office uses Apple equipment exclusively, and while I could get a PC for my job, it'd probably just be easier to maintain the status quo (plus, I've wanted a Mac to play with for a while, and if the church is paying for it, sign me up.) So, my question . . .
What are the best sites or books for a Mac noob -- particularly for someone who is rather tech-savvy , like myself -- to visit in order to get started (or a head-start) with Mac use?
Thanks.

Yahoo Messenger/Mac OSX problems
Date: 04/18/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: software, java, web, yahoo, google
I am on a Mac G4 running OS X 10.3.9, and I'm having troubles with my Yahoo Messenger. I connect to the internet through my work's T1. Yahoo Messenger usually quits after I send a single line of text, if it lets me sign on at all. I've been in contact with Yahoo Customer Care, but I really don't think they actually read the emails I send since their responses don't address my problem. I contacted my company's help desk, wondering if it was a proxy issue (since that had been a problem in the recent past with other software) and he told me that it's been happening to a lot of Mac users and they haven't been able to find a way to work around it. I was hoping someone here has any idea how I can fix this! I use YIM to contact the freelance writers that I work with, so it's not really something I can do without.
Here's what I've tried:
*Uninstalling and reinstalling YIM
*Connecting through Yahoo's java client/web messenger
*Installing Adium
*Clearing the Yahoo plist files off my computer, uninstalling YIM and reinstalling
*Scouring the Yahoo and Mac help sites/knowledge bases as well as several pages of Google search results
All I can figure out is that I'm not the only this happens to and that it's only my version of OS X and newer.
Has anyone here been able to fix this, or do you have any ideas of something else I can try?
Thank you!

Google AdSense Competitive Ad Filter - Limits Removed
Date: 04/19/06
(Java Web) Keywords: google
Google AdSense competitive ad filter is an excellent way to provide better advertisements and deter MFA's. One of the grievances for big publishers was the small number of filters you could set per account, merely 200. Apparently Google has silently eliminated the 200 URL limit for filters.
Today I could find no mention about the maximum [...]

AD and C#
Date: 04/20/06
(Asp Dot Net) Keywords: google
My current project I need to pull an Active Directory name for the current visitor.
On my page I'd like to display
"Hello, (active directory user)"
I'm using C#, with Visual Studio 2005
Does anyone have experience with this, and perhaps some code I look at?
There are a few references that I've found with Google, but I'm leery of running the code because I don't have a development environment for testing our Active Directory at the moment.
Thanks,
Benjamin

Problems with the common tasks pane on Windows XP desktop
Date: 04/22/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: google
A few months ago, my dad installed a screensaver onto his user space on our family computer, and while it's not affecting anyone else's desktop, he's had constant problems with his own ever since.
The common tasks pane that's usually there on the left hand side when you open up folders has attached itself onto his desktop, and try as I may, I've found absolutely no way of removing it. I've searched Google and various other search engines, and only been able to find how to remove/add the common tasks pane in actual folder windows - I can't find anywhere that addresses the concept of having it on your desktop. Even trying to remove the common tasks pane from the folder windows like My Documents and then setting it as a default hasn't budged it - the pane is removed in all the folders, but remains on the desktop.
Screenshot of the desktop and common tasks pane.
In trying to remove it, I've tried to access both 'Folder Options' and 'Taskbar and Start Menu' from the Control Panel, but for some reason, both of them refuse to open. There is no error message displayed, but absolutely no reaction to speak of from the pc at all, aside from a display of the 'busy' cursor for a second or two, before reverting back to normal, with no outcome. I've discovered that I can still open 'Folder Options' in other round-about ways, by going into Tools/Folder Options in My Documents, but the fact that I can't open it from Control Panel seems to suggest there is a problem.
In addition, the desktop appears to be in what I can only describe as 'read-only' mode: not only is there seemingly no way of removing the common tasks pane, it's also impossible to move any of the icons out of their current position, other than by deleting them, or dragging them into the folders listed in 'Other Places' on the (out-of-place) common task pane. I can still rearrange the icons according to Name, Size, etc, but they're still in fixed positions - although interchangeable - and turning off the 'align to grid' option has had no effect on this.
Screenshot of what happens when I try to move 'Internet Explorer'
Also, the start bar is also occasionally prone to moving around without any prompting. If my dad logs off his account, or even presses 'Switch User', about 50% of the time when he returns to his screen, the start bar is either half-way up the screen, half its usual length, at the top of the screen, or occasionally all of the above. It has been known to happen that there are two start bars - one in the middle of the screen, and one at the top, without him having done anything to warrant this.
I've tried various different FAQs, troubleshooting sites, and spent hours tweaking options and settings myself, but none of them seem to help any of the problems. I've been trying to fix it for months, and I'm basically at the end of my tether, so any advice would be greatly appreciated - thank-you in advance.

For writers to keep track of what you've written and where you've sent it. Like anything online, it's beta... but it was alpha a week ago, so hey. And it's got my first stab at AJAX as well. :)
I was happier with the design than I expected to be (the mock-up in photoshop was very drab/generic compared to how it turned out, though I hope it's still fairly plain), which is always nice (I'm not a designer).

I've already googled .scb file extension and I'm not getting any help. I've used Total Commander to change the file type several times, and nothing seems to be working.
Anyone mentioning Scala - this is not a photo or a video file. It is text. The file is encrypted, Word will open it, but it doesn't know how to unecrypt it.
