How exactly does one go about switching hosts?

I've been on Rydia.net's Domain Account for about a year and I'm interested in switching to DreamHost's Managed Web Hosting, but I'm not entirely sure how.

I have the domain and a whole whack of things on it, not to mention a POP3 account that I use for just about everything. Will I have to download everything onto my computer then upload it onto the new host? What about the POP3? And how do I switch domains?

    Thanks a lot!

Date: 07/09/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, programming, css, html, web, hosting

hello. i'm new here. kind of new with webdesign as well (been doing it for almost a year just as a hobby; mostly with css and html).

    1. i'm just curious as to how many of you actually have made webdesign/programming your career, and if so, what route did you take in college (certificate, associates, bachelors, etc). i'm a second year community college student, and i'm interested in persuing webdesign as a career, technical side and design side, so i guess im just confused as to what i should do in school to get where i'm wanting to be (job as a webdesigner for a company). any tips, suggestions?

2.also, i'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but in the userinfo, " Affordable & Reliable Webhosts" was left blank. so i'm going to ask you guys for some reccomendations on hosts. ive done godaddy, and 1and1.com before.. and neither have what i want for a low enough price. i'm looking for something that will allow me to have multiple ftp accounts, php, a decent amount of bandwidth, multiple domain hosting, etc. any suggestions?

    3. last but not least, i'm looking into using moveable type as a blog for my website. i would like to achieve something like this. does anyone have any experience with this? is it fairly easy? is there something better i should be using. as you can tell, i'm kind of a beginner, and i would love if you would point me in the right direction if i'm missing out on something better.

any help would be awesome. thanks!

In this article I cover the hard questions to ask (checklist) while choosing a shared hosting provider. These questions are gathered over the years and through hard experience with different shared hosting providers. You may not get everything from one provider. Date: 07/15/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, browser, web, hosting

Hello everyone! I'm at a real loss with this website I'm developing. You might remember I posted about making an enrollment form, and you were all super helpful. The thing is that the server hosting the site does not support any scripting, so I've had to code the page the retard way (http://www.cfs.purdue.edu/itsi/testitems/EnrollmentForm1.htm). The people want there to be at least a confirmation page show when the person submits the e-mail, which I have included. However, the page shows up if the user presses submit, regardless of whether or not it has submitted, and in a new window. This is just done using Dreamweaver options to open a browser window upon submit.

Can anyone take a look at it and tell me what in the world I can do for these folks? I've looked online, everyone says PHP, scripts... I'm going nowhere on it.

  6. Lame Nerd Question

Date: 07/20/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, linux, hosting, apache

    Here's what's happening:

My company seems to be dragging its feet on upgrading the Solaris server on which I'm supposed to be running this website I'm developing. I've been hosting on my own external server, and when this summer internship is over, I have to move everything over regardless of whether or not the server is ready.

Consequently, people in my department are trying to hunt down an extra Unix box for me to use as a pseudo-server until the real server is (finally) upgraded.

    So here's my question:

I've only touched Unix very remotely, as in using an SSH command-line console with my school's web server. I'm a little familiar with basic Linux commands, but that's about it. How difficult would it be for someone like me (who only uses Linux when she has to for classes) to install Apache, PHP, and MySQL...as well as migrate over my existing website (currently running on a Red Hat 9 server with Apache, PHP 4.x, and MySQL 3.2.3 or something similar)?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  7. Session Variables that Do Not Persist? Please Help

I had this conversation with FastHosts. Clearly they are either refusing to acknowledge my problem or I am being a bit thick. Please help me someone. I have included the conversation below, with my questions and responses in bold:

Here is an odd problem. When I run my ASP.Net on any server it works. When I run it on my fasthost server everything works except session variables do not persist across pages. Please resolve! It is probably an IIS setting that I can-not set programmatically.

Can you provide further information, including full replication steps on how we can see the fact that the session variables are being lost.

    http://www.damn-them.com/login.aspx

    username = tester@pcarney.me.uk
    password = fish
then click "click here to submit details".

It sets the session variable "level" to 1 everywhere else but on fasthosts, which means that the page redirects to nothing I can use on your server. As I've said, It is MOST probably an IIS setting that I cannot change programmatically. Please resolve as this call should NOT be closed.

The domain is incorrectly configured, as the path to the site appears to be C:\Inetpub\wwwroot which is incorrect on our servers. This should be e:\domains\d\damn-them.com\user\htdocs

Please configure it correctly such that I might use session variables. It is after all a standard feature of ASP.

The problem is with your scripts - please re-configure them.

I do not use that anywhere in my scripts, compile or otherwise. Please give me access to the domain mapping so I might set it myself.

I have no idea unfortunately. I did take a look at the web.config file but couldn't see anything in there, I would advise you to contact the devel-opers of the software.

  13. help please!

Date: 08/20/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web, hosting, apache

This is the first time using actual home made php code. I usually would go and just download a script and use it as is. This time using mostly original components of course all source and reference acquired through php.net. Anyways I am having some trouble though. Let me first give you an idea of my directory setup. I have 'web' as my root directory. And I am working in my 'emu' folder. So it all add's up to 'c:/web/emu'. And I am hosting this using apache, and am using a dns redirect service. My url is http://corpsegristle.dynu.com, and I am working on http://corpsegristle.dynu.com/emulation.php. I cannot just put '/emu' as the directory, I have to include '/web/emu' for it to load up the script and find the roms. But the problem relies in it including the "web" in the url. Notice:

    http://corpsegristle.dynu.com/web/emu/a/gen/Aero%20Blasters%20Genesis.rar -bad
    http://corpsegristle.dynu.com/emu/a/gen/Aero%20Blasters%20Genesis.rar -good

I need to somehow get this to only include "emu" oppose to including the "web" as well. Or maybe I am missing something all together here. I have tried to include the actual url to my site in the directory but that doesn't work. I appologize if this is a "noob" question. Still new to PHP.

  14. Hosting

Date: 08/20/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting

My friends and I have a website.. a community of sorts for about 50 people. It has a chatroom, a calendar of events, blogs, photo galleries, etc.

    It's written quite efficiently, but:

Hosting companies don't like the load that it supposedly taxes their shared servers with (the load is probably larger than that of a portion of other users, but it's nothing outstanding).

So our current host, 1and1, is pushing us toward a dedicated server solution.

This is kinda nuts, because it's a site just for our group of friends. Our webmaster would not want to dish out his own money for a dedicated server, and collecting fees from friends every month would not really work.

Any suggestions are welcome. We're considering different things, some along the lines of running our own server from someone's house (the details of renting a dedicated line, etc. are sketchy.) Some about moving to a different host (but here we're not sure if the same thing will happen again.)

  15. XP User Profiles

Date: 08/26/05 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software, web, hosting

Hi all, I am having an issue with a network that I have been hired to set up. I'm in WAY over my head, my specialty is Cisco, and I'm doing Windows Server 2003 setup and administration.

    Current Situation:

The Company is running their systems in a workgroup, with a central computer acting as the "server" for their shared software program. They currently have about ten employees on-site. The propreitor wants to make sure the new network is secure, and wants to be able to track his employees' internet usage. He also wants his two off-site employees to be able to VPN in to their internal network.

    Proposed Solution:

Transferring the duties of the central computer to a server, which will also provide AD, DHCP, DNS, WINS, ISA, and Exchange(!).

    Problems:
    1. When I attach the computers to the new domain, a new profile is created for each domain user that logs into the network from a particular machine. However, the old local machine profiles have all the necessary user data for their old way of working (Desktop, Start Menu, and the like). This would not normally be an issue, except that their Outlook (and in one case, ActiveSync) data does not transfer to their domain account (note: we are using local profiles, not roaming). Is their any way to merge the old profile and the new profile, so all is as it was before I installed the server (except for the authentication)?

    2. The company has an external web site hosted by a hosting service. The web address for this is companyname.com (no, that's not the ACTUAL URL). The AD is also named companyname.com. When an internal user goes to check his/her Outlook (their e-mail is currently hosted offsite as well, see #3), it cannot resolve the mail server (currently set to mail.companyname.com). Is there any way around this, besides taking a grenade to AD, and starting from scratch (which literally means I will have to start from scratch)?

    3. Because my schedule and their company cannot permit a daytime install, the installation is to be done in phases:
    1. Test (completed)
    2. Domain Authentication/File Server (currently working on)
    3. ISA configuration (as of right now, I am only using the internal NIC, and am using the DSL modem for DHCP and gateway services...when ISA is installed, the network config will go Internet---DSL Modem---Server---Inernal Network)
    4. Exchange server (changing the MX record on their current public domain, to point to our static IP)
I have NEVER used Exchange...and it is already stumped me. How do I know everything is working as it should with Exchange, before any critical e-mails are lost?

OK I know this is going to sound pretty stupid. I just got my new domain and hosting package and now i want to upload some pictures onto my site so that I can link to them for various reasons. So I went in and uploaded all the images that i wanted to use. But whe nI try to put in the url to them it tells me forbidden. What is causing this. I am using the ftp file manager in the control panel for the site. I registered my domain and have my hosting through www.cyberpixels.com any help would be great.

  19. Multiple, independent domains

Date: 09/23/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: web, hosting

I've been maintaining a single personal website for a number of years now, but now the rest of my family wants to get in on the act, and have their own websites, too. We signed up for a shared hosting account that advertised multiple domains, but after we got it set up realized that this was not what we wanted at all. Rather than several independent domains, we had one domain and several others that were aliased to the main one. I reasoned that surely there was a way for the host to set it up on the server the way we wanted it, but apparently not.

So I have two questions: First, is this the behavior I should expect from a shared hosting account, or did we just end up with a bad host? In other words, are there shared hosts out there that will support multiple, independent domains on a single account, or is this not even possible? And second, if not, what kind of account do I need to do what I want to do?

From the little I've been able to figure out, it looks like a reseller account might be my ticket. But I honestly don't know what I'm doing at all. If a reseller account is what I need, do any of you have hosting suggestions?
