1. Great Domain Hosting Deal

Date: 04/30/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: hosting

Dreamhost is having a great deal right now!! They're offering TRIPLE bandwidth and storage space on all their plans. If you've been looking for a domain host or have been wanting to change hosting companies, this really is too good to pass up.

    Date: 05/06/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: hosting

Ok... my friend has this account with smugmug.com and he wants to set up a domain name that will automatically redirect to the smugmug address. He doesn't want to pay a hosting fee, he just wants to pay for the domain registration, if he can get away with it. How do we do this and who do we go through?

Date: 05/14/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, java, web, linux, hosting

The company I work for is a Linux web hosting company. And we desperately need a decent knowledge base system. Primarily for internal use, but also so that we can provide direct links back to the KB for customers to read to help us streamline our help desk responses.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I've been looking into Twiki, but that requires an enormous amount of setup time. And now I'm looking at FreeMind, but that isn't HTML, its a java applet.

Date: 05/21/05 (Apache)    Keywords: web, hosting, apache

[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

hello all -- i don’t know where else to ask my question, so here we go. first, background on my setup. i have two webservers on an internal network, each to be responsible for hosting a unique site. i have one public IP, and all port 80 traffic is being forwarded to a third machine running mac os x server. so obviously, there would need to be some high level packet rewriting to get these requests to the correct box via the mac os x server machine. the solution? well besides acquiring another public ip (or two), reverse proxying (right?)

the problem at the moment is that it is slow as balls. see for yourself --> http://mczapp.darktech.org (click on a japan page). the pictures come up pretty slow. compare this to behind the firewall (http://192...), the images and pages load lightning quick. what’s the deal? is it just by virtue of reverse proxying? my friend says no, based on his experience. is it that mac os x server’s apache build is just fucked/bloated like whoa? i mean, the computer is fast enough to be doing this, too. should i do precaching (i don’t even know how to do that).

  6. Problem with Thunderbird 1.0.2 on XP

    Date: 05/28/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: hosting

    Hello, All.
I have been having this terribly annoying problem with Thunderbird on my XP ever since I got it and was hoping someone here may know of a fix. Whenever I check my email, wether it be a profile for only one email account or a profile with three email accounts, I get a pop up warning window that says, "Unable to connect to your IMAP Server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. If so, use teh Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cached connections."
I have contacted my hosting company and it's not on their end as they reportedly do not get these errors when they use Thunderbird, and I have also reduced the cached connections to zero, no difference.
Does anyone have any ideas? It's terribly annoying as it won't let me view the inbox/outbox/sent/trash/etc unless I close a reopen to view a different folder due to this "caching" problem.

    Cheers,
    D.

PS. Does anyone else also notice that if they open their profiles and click on the profile and hit okay too quickly it wont load Thunderbird, but keep a process open in the background instead preventing an further processes of Thunderbird until you end-task it? If i open the profiles, wait a moment and then hit okay. the app loads fine.

  8. C# Programmer Needed

Date: 06/01/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: web, hosting, shopping

We're a web design/hosting company. We were hired last week by a company to host their site. The site is a combination shopping cart/image vault/ FTP Product Push, etc. We were told the site was complete and ready to go live. The company that built the site was dismissed because of disagreements of some nature.

We're not proficient in C# but didn't think it would be a problem since the site was supposedly complete. The image vault portion of the site isn't working. We are supposed to go live with this on Friday, and unfortunately every C# programmer we've contacted has bailed for one reason or another.

Would anyone in this community be interested in some freelance work on a very short deadline?

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Hoping that someone can help me.

Date: 06/03/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: web, hosting

    Hi there,

I'm at my wits end and I'm hoping that there is someone who knows more about this than I do who can help me, but, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Two years ago, I started a small business, I plan weddings and sell wedding related items. In August of that year, at the recommendation of another wedding planner, I created a website and had it hosted by Zanuc.com.

My problem is, Zanuc has gone MIA. They said that their sites were being hosted by CMG Web Hosting which doesn't exist. I've been trying to find out what happened to my account (that is paid in full through August of this year)

I wasn't so upset, becasue the site was still running, but, this week, it has gone missing. I spoke to the Assoc. Director at Peak-10 which is the company that hosts the servers for Zanuc and he had no idea that Zanuc had done this to their customers. According to him, the machines he hosts for Zanuc are running fine.

Any ideas what I can do?

    Thanks.Gail

  10. Stream live audio from my website

Date: 06/08/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: software, web, hosting

Our next adventure for our site is to produce a live (or pre-recorded) streaming radio show from our site. I'm looking into what the most reasonable (free/cheap) solution would be. The broadcast point would be in a remote location which has only satellite internet connection (Direcway.com - 100kbs up & 1Mbs down), so hosting directly is not much of an option. We would max out at four or five listeners. Real Audio offered a solution for carrying hundreds of simultaneous listeners, but they charge an insane amount of money for their service.

I'm looking for somewhere in between.

We have our site hosted professionally on a Unix server. Is there perhaps a way to use the web server as a broadcast point? Is there some sort of program that we could use to hop our signal from there? Isn't there a way I could just write it into some sort of server-side scripting rather than buying a chunk of software? Help!!

    Thanks a million!!

  11. I need some help

Date: 06/14/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: html, web, hosting

I'm building a website because I'm starting a small online business (I make jewelry and monsters).

    I need good bandwidth.
I need enough space to store lots of photos (or a good, affordable, dependable photo hosting site)
And preferrably some kind of thing to help me make order forms and the ability to have people pay with paypal.
It can't be too expensive, cause I'm poor...That's why I'm starting the business.
I know enough html, so I don't need a ton of programs to help me build the site, though I need to figure out the ordering thing.

Suggestions for good places would be very much appreciated.

  12. Setting up a database

Date: 06/14/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web, hosting

I have been asked to build a sales/order/customer/employee management system for my company. I am having a problem deciding how to set up the "sales/order" tables. The company sells domain registration, hosting, web design and on hold messaging. I cant store all the orders in one table called orders simply because all the different products have different information that needs to be stored but I am just not sure that 3 separate tables is the way to go.

    The website table would contain:
    order# | designer | start_date | completion_date | salesman | customer# | sales_date

    The hosting table would contain:
    order# | domain_name | start_date | location | salesman | customer# | sales_date

    The domain table would contain:
    order# | domain_name | start_date | salesman | customer# | sales_date

Should I have one table called orders that contains the common columns like salesman, customer# and sales_date and then use the order# to get the information from appropriate table? The company will probably add more products in the future.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  14. Streams vs Downloads

Date: 06/21/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, hosting

Can anyone help me understand streams vs downloads? I'm researching starting a music hosting site and have a few questions

    01. How does download a song compare to streaming it bandwidth wise? If I stream a 3mb song or download a 3mb song is it consuming the same amount of bandwidth?

    02. Where can I find more information about streaming music? Is there software involved? What the most common (or only way) to get a file to stream rather than download.

    03. Are there different stream qualities? I've heard something about it and never really put thought into it until I realized the stream quality from MySpace.com is much worse than PureVolume.com (Could just be me). How do you control the quality of your stream?

I think that's it for now. Thanks in advance.

I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.

    ideas have included:

Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want

any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.
i know some html, coldfusion, asp, but hosting coldfusion is a problem which is why i'm looking for preconfigured apps if possible.

  20. Free Site Search

Date: 07/06/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web, hosting, google

    Hi,

I'm looking for a free site search feature.

    Requirements:

Standard search engine features for a specific web site.
Remotely hosted (no CGI/Scripting of any kind on the actual web site)
    Free
    No advertising

Bit of a tall order due to the last two. Google do it, with targetted adsense, atomz do it with targetted adsense-like advertising. Both of which are (duh) providing links to our comptetitors at the top of site search on our site (not good). Company of course doesn't want to 1) pay for scripting support on the hosting or 2) pay google 2k a year for adsense free site search.

    Anyone know of anything?

    Cheers
