1. virtual hosting

Date: 01/03/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: html, web, hosting, google

I need some iis help here. (or meta refresh/redirect?)

I'm not a web guy by trade, but this thing falls on my lap anyway.

    --
ok: I just did a domain transfer of mydomainB.com from some china registrar to godaddy.com

godaddy.com doesn't seem to have URL forwarding, only domain forwarding and A and Cnames, mx

(as opposed to the one i use for my own private domain www.domainbooking.com)

I just turned on domain forwarding to point to mydomainA.com/mywebsite but I'm not sure if it will corrupt the mx entries for mail. (which should point to mail.mydomainB.com , in turn A for mail.mydomainB.com = 12.34.56.78)

assuming it does and I reverse the domain forwarding.
then what I have is that my current A for www.mydomainA.com = 11.22.33.44
and my new A for www.mydomainB.com points to 11.22.33.44 as well

but they are supposed to be two distinct websites.

so I need to redirect by url? perhaps on my index.html. those that originate from www.mydomainA.com proceed to index1.html and those from www.mydomainB.com proceed to 11.22.33.44/mywebsite/index.html

I think this falls under the category of virtual hosting, i've been searching google for bit with not much luck.
I'm not sure host headers work for wan/internet domain names, and godaddy/A addressing doesn't quite allow you to specify port numbers either.

to add to the complication, the website is also hosting an exchange outloook mobile access site. so http://www.mydomainA.com/exchange should be accessible.

so how do I do this?

  2. Book recommendations / Web Hosting Recommendations

Date: 01/11/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css, java, web, hosting

I'm looking for some really good web design books. I've been spending some time at the bookstores lately looking through what they have, and there seem to be a lot of books out there, but I'm not sure which ones are good and which ones aren't. What I'm looking for are some in depth CSS, PHP, and Javascript books that are thorough and easy to understand. I'm also open to any other books you guys could suggest to help improve my skills. I can't afford to take classes right now, and I really learn best on my own so, I figured this would be a good way to go. Also, any good websites out there are fine too.

Now onto the second question.. and I'm sure it's been asked several times so, thanks for any responses.

I'm currently set up with web hosting through Aussiehosts. I've been there for about 3 years now, and when I first got set up I was really pleased with it. I pay about $38 a year for 200MB of disk space (which I'm currently using about 477MB). The company was recently bought out, and I have not been happy with it lately. Email is my biggest problem. Half the time I can't even login to my email, and then when I do I can't actually send any emails. I'm considering moving elsewhere, but I have NO IDEA what some good, affordable web hosts are. I found this one by way of a friend. I've been looking around at different companies, but they all seem to be kind of expensive. I'd like to stay somewhere near that price range, but I'd also like to have more disk space which means I'll need to pay more. So, any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help guys!

  3. advice on domain ownership transfer?

    Date: 01/07/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: hosting

Hi, I'm new here. I just have a quick question about domain-name transfer. I'm sorry if this question has already been asked on here...

A guy wants to buy my domain name, rvng.com, and I'm not really using it for much anymore, so I'll sell it to him. I'm not sure what to price it at... I've spent about $240 in hosting costs on it since I created it in 2002, and I have it paid for up until 2007. I think I'll just sell it for the cost that I've put into it so far, or maybe a bit more. I used one of those free online domain name appraisal sites, and after I entered various info about the domain name, it estimated it at between $700-1000. I don't think I can ask that much of this guy, but does $300 sound reasonable? or should I shoot lower and just try to recoup my hosting expenses?

Also, I don't know the procedure for domain ownership transfer. Doteasy, my hosting service, has a system for this, but how should I handle the sale? Should I have him send me a check, and after it clears, I give him the log-in info? Would he trust me enough for that? Meanwhile, I don't want to give him the info, then have him pay me. Would I trust him enough for that?

If anyone could give me tips on how this procedure goes, I'd greatly appreciate it...

  7. Multiple, independent domains

Date: 09/23/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: web, hosting

I've been maintaining a single personal website for a number of years now, but now the rest of my family wants to get in on the act, and have their own websites, too. We signed up for a shared hosting account that advertised multiple domains, but after we got it set up realized that this was not what we wanted at all. Rather than several independent domains, we had one domain and several others that were aliased to the main one. I reasoned that surely there was a way for the host to set it up on the server the way we wanted it, but apparently not.

So I have two questions: First, is this the behavior I should expect from a shared hosting account, or did we just end up with a bad host? In other words, are there shared hosts out there that will support multiple, independent domains on a single account, or is this not even possible? And second, if not, what kind of account do I need to do what I want to do?

From the little I've been able to figure out, it looks like a reseller account might be my ticket. But I honestly don't know what I'm doing at all. If a reseller account is what I need, do any of you have hosting suggestions?

  8. Changing

Date: 07/07/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: web, hosting

How exactly does one go about switching hosts?

I've been on Rydia.net's Domain Account for about a year and I'm interested in switching to DreamHost's Managed Web Hosting, but I'm not entirely sure how.

I have the domain and a whole whack of things on it, not to mention a POP3 account that I use for just about everything. Will I have to download everything onto my computer then upload it onto the new host? What about the POP3? And how do I switch domains?

    Thanks a lot!

    Rock on. <3

  9. I need some help

Date: 06/14/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: html, web, hosting

I'm building a website because I'm starting a small online business (I make jewelry and monsters).

    I need good bandwidth.
I need enough space to store lots of photos (or a good, affordable, dependable photo hosting site)
And preferrably some kind of thing to help me make order forms and the ability to have people pay with paypal.
It can't be too expensive, cause I'm poor...That's why I'm starting the business.
I know enough html, so I don't need a ton of programs to help me build the site, though I need to figure out the ordering thing.

Suggestions for good places would be very much appreciated.

  10. Hoping that someone can help me.

Date: 06/03/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: web, hosting

    Hi there,

I'm at my wits end and I'm hoping that there is someone who knows more about this than I do who can help me, but, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Two years ago, I started a small business, I plan weddings and sell wedding related items. In August of that year, at the recommendation of another wedding planner, I created a website and had it hosted by Zanuc.com.

My problem is, Zanuc has gone MIA. They said that their sites were being hosted by CMG Web Hosting which doesn't exist. I've been trying to find out what happened to my account (that is paid in full through August of this year)

I wasn't so upset, becasue the site was still running, but, this week, it has gone missing. I spoke to the Assoc. Director at Peak-10 which is the company that hosts the servers for Zanuc and he had no idea that Zanuc had done this to their customers. According to him, the machines he hosts for Zanuc are running fine.

Any ideas what I can do?

    Thanks.Gail

  12. Suggestions?

Date: 04/23/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, hosting

I manage two domains, each under 10MB. For the past two years, they've been hosted with dr2.net, but then service got spotty and then they merged with Mesopia and the reviews got worse.

So, I'm looking to switch both domains to a new shared host. After checking out webhostingjury.com, I like the features of the standard plan of u-hs.com but the price seems a tad too steep. Looking for something in the area of $10 to $25 a year. One of the domains I expect to migrate to PHP and MySQL in the next few months.

    Suggestions?

  14. two very stupid questions...

Date: 01/06/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: cms, hosting

bear with me... this is not my realm of expertise.

i've been asked to look into putting a mailing list on a site. i assume there is some kind of cookie cutter way to do this, but i don't know what that is... i'd like to be able to A) have some/complete control over how it looks and b)not have to pay anyone to have a mailing list.

    also...

i was told by a friend that i could use modify moveable type stuff to create what is essentially a CMS, but i don't know how to find out if my hosting company (hostony) supports this. actually, i know very little about moveable type in general.

anyone who is feeling very kind who could explain any of this to me would be my best friend forever. thanks.

  15. upload_max_filesize

Date: 02/10/06 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, hosting

    Hi,

I'm working on a little something to upload and share files with a friend.
    I've hit a road block.
I'd like the file limit to be 15 megs, in order to do this I need to change
    upload_max_filesize in the php.ini file.

I am on shared hosting and so I will use ini_set(upload_max_filesize,"15M")
    [see http://us3.php.net/ini_set]

    It does not work.
    I've done ini_set(upload_max_filesize,15728640) as well.

my code that shows it not working:

    ini_set(upload_max_filesize,15728640);
    $inicheck=ini_get(upload_max_filesize);
    echo "$inicheck";

It always echos the default 2M.

This is a major roadblock and I'd really appreciate any help!
If I need to clarify, I will :)
    Thanks!

  16. Hosting and Domains

    Date: 02/14/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: hosting

I have a few sites hosted at maxipointservers.net. They have now sold and raised their prices, prompting me to look for a new solution. I have few requirements, just need an inexpensive host with 20 to 40 mbs of space. Any suggestions?

Would it be best to have the domains registered one place and have the hosting separate, or are all-in-one packages the way to go?

I'm a bit flustered, as they threw this at me suddenly with little more notice than a hurried e-mail saying I owed them money to have my sites re-activated.

  17. A word of advice

    Date: 02/15/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: hosting

IF you are lookign for hosting, avoid Accuburst.com at all costs. I'm with them now, and I'm in the process of changing my hosting to Dreamhost.

Accuburst is good at returning email to their sales department, but terrible when it comes to support after they have your money.
The current problem is their servers have been up and down over the last 4 days, with email bounching, etc.

Want to see some *not* happy customers, and support blowing smoke up people's backsides? Go look at thier support forums.

I shold have know something was up then you have to dig through a forum to find DNS settings.

I don't know about the rest of you, but if my sites are down, and my clients aren't happy, I'm not making money.

  19. Oh help! Who should host my site?

Date: 02/18/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: rss, css, web, hosting

I've created a new website (Simple Vegetarian Recipes) as step one in trying to write a vegetarian cookbook. To make the site, I paid $299 for a service that does a whole bunch of stuff for you to help you submit it to search engines and the like.

Long story short (and I find it to be a funny story) I am on the brink of getting a refund and taking my site elsewhere. Except this service does a few things that I don't know how to do. Namely, they create and automatically update a sitemap for me, and they set up an RSS feed for me. They also use CSS, which I don't know how to do. I'm not sure how it's gonna work when I take my site somewhere else exactly. I know where I can go to get the site set up somewhere else, and fortunately, I don't even think too many links will break. Any recommendations on where I can take the site or how I can set this stuff up?

The short story is that the webhosting people are NUTS. Some lady put her site in a forum called "Submit Site for Review" and it was a terrible site and I told her that. Actually, I clicked on it hoping it would be great. It is about gardening. I wanted to bookmark it and use it as a primary resource in creating a garden. But it's a sales pitch with no content. The site drove me away and I told her why. She got all bent out of shape over it, and things kind of snowballed. I thought she would thank me for telling her why her site isn't doing well. That's why she asked to have it reviewed, right?

The owner of the company is now involved in all of this. It's like living in some altnerative world where everyone is crazy. I found a way to optimize the UI of the site and I put my suggestion into another forum. The woman with the bad gardening site found my post and put a link to the original post there, and lo and behold, the millionaire owner of the company found the thread and posted a reply. I really don't appreciate his patronizing attitude towards me. So now he's threatening to give me a week to move my site and then to refund my money - and I'm more than glad to take the refund and move. I just don't know where to go!!!
