MySQL/PHP connection error
Date: 02/26/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql, hosting
I programmed a CMS for one of my client and put it up on my own site in a test directory while it was in development. It was working just fine. They finally got their own hosting set up with Network Solutions so I uploaded all my files, set up the database and changed the username, password and db name in my scripts. Now I'm getting the following error: Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'
I've double checked that I have the right username and the right password.
I'm using the following code to connect: $link = mysql_connect('localhost', $user, $pass) or die("Could not connect : " . mysql_error());
When I log into phpMyAdmin I see the following: MySQL 4.1.16-log running on localhost as eclipse@localhost so I'm assuming that 'localhost' is right. What else could be wrong? I've tried emailing tech support at Network Solutions but I doubt anyone there will get back to me. It's a pretty basic error but i can't figure out what else I would've needed to change when switching the site from my server to theirs.

motherfucking free hosting *bash head on desk*
Date: 02/28/06
(Web Development) Keywords: css, asp, hosting
i did a site for a client, looks loverly - but i found out this morning that GoDaddy has fucked up the whole fucking thing with it's fucking free hosting banners...
FUCK.
is there any way I can get around this? I used framesets because i'm a total knob when it comes to CSS. Really, it may as well be some alien language, cause i just -don't- get it.
The client really wanted the site live TODAY, and likely i'm not going to get any word back from tech support until tomorrow 'cause i'm not wasting my money calling long distance.
check out the ghastly disaster at http://www.gabiepstein.com *cries*
ETA: as far as i know, she has paid for hosting - what else would she be paying $87.29 annually for? it says economy Windows w/ASP - i don't need the ASP... just banner-free hosting :p

Another webhosting question

(Web Development) Keywords: php, web, hosting
I am so sorry - I know that people have posted several times about how is best for webhosting, but I didn't write it down or book mark it when people gave suggestions.
I need to find a hosting company that provides good support, is reliable, supports .php and is priced reasonably. Any suggestions?
Again I apologize for the repetition.

Question about eCommerce
Date: 03/06/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: software, web, hosting, shopping
I'm a programmer who has recently been pushed into a position of web designer where I work. I'm designing a very small site for a customer of ours, and they would like the ability to accept orders online. They wanted a simple form that would email orders to them. I knew I could easily program such a thing, but told them that email is not secure for collecting credit card information, and that they would most likely need some sort of shopping cart software. The company which they purchased hosting through offers a shopping cart program for $9 a month. Otherwise I can try to implement some free shopping cart software.
My question is this: Is there any way to do secure ordering the way they want without a shopping cart? They don't want to use PayPal, or any other service that costs them money per sale. They simply want a form to come to them listing the order and the credit card info, which they can then process themselves. If not, then can anyone suggest some good free shopping carts that are simple to implement (I imagine they'll want to update on their own once the site is live)? I apologize if my questions seem naive. Like I said, I am new to web design.

Web Hosting Question
Date: 03/10/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, hosting, google
Hey guys. I've taken up a project to help out the family of a missing person in North Carolina. I'm researching some cheap web hosting plans for them.. something they could pay monthly.. and was just wondering if any of you had ever purchased a plan like that before. I don't want them to have to pay a ton of money for this, but I don't have the space for them on my own host either. Been looking around on Google, but wanted to hear some personal experiences/recommendations if they are any.
Thanks!

Anyone looking for portfolio work?
Date: 03/11/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: css, html, hosting
Hey guys,
I know most people here already have their own businesses or get by on freelance - but is anyone looking for portfolio work? I have a non-profit job on my plate, and I just don't have the time for it now. It's a pro-bono job, but something that could be potentially great on a portfolio. Like I said the site is for a non-profit which will be based on typepad. The owner has already bought her domain, and hosting and has a blog through type-pad (completely customizable).
If anyone is interested please, please give me a shout. If you have your own site, or one or two you have designed before for others it would be great to see so I would know you would be able to do the job. Previous experience with typepad or movable type is a plus! the logo graphic is done. Basically what you would be required to do is just set up the site template, and configure the site for the owner to add content.
XHTML/CSS designers only. NO tables.
More information will be provided when I've found someone.
Thanks.

Looking For Dedicated Web Hosting Solutions

I am slowly but surely outgrowing my WestHost VPS. More and more problems are starting to emerge on reliability, bandwidth and services front. Their first level services are great. However they are horribly poor at second level [...]

FTP hosting
Date: 03/17/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo
Hope this is within the realms of this community.
I do a ton of web design work with my brother's company. This involves me either driving there to pick up the files on CD, which is kind of a pain in the fanny sometimes. I don't mind getting out of the house, but it does add wear and tear to my vehicle when I am only there for a few minutes.
He has other uses for FTP hosting as well for printers, clients and the like.
I would go in with him on the hosting costs so it would have to be pretty inexpensive, reliable and easy enough for him to understand.
Anyone have any hosts you prefer? We don't need any web hosting, this would be strictly file storage.
I would go ahead and host that here on another machine but then I would require to purchase IP addresses and with set-up fees that seems silly since I will be moving from my currently location in June. Not very cost effective at the moment.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: In doing some Googling (actually found it through Yahoo though) I was wondering if anyone has used http://www.streamload.com They do have a free based file hosting account and I will try that but it's always nice to be able to have opinions on long or longer-than short term use, if you will.

hey all
quick question - who do you use for web hosting? i'm looking for recommendations for small business/personal site hosting, like for bands and other small clients who don't require a ton of bandwidth or even much storage. i've used fatcow, but didn't have to maintain the site so i don't know how great they turned out to be. i currently host my own site with yahoo small business, which is like 11.95 a month for 5 gigs of storage and 200 gigs of bandwidth. they support scripting languages and have integrated wordpress and movable type which is pretty sweet, but i'm wondering if i can do better.
thanks!

hi again everyone. first, i would like to thank those who replied to my question about hosting - i think i might try out dreamhost since it seems to fit my needs most and was recommended by a few of you.
here is my most pressing question: i want to be able to right click an image and "add image to iphoto library" in firefox like i can in safari on mac osx tiger. IS THERE A WAY?? i've searched and asked and googled and have no answer.
and one more: does anyone know a way to get flash movies to play smoother on macs? i didn't even realize there was such a performance difference between mac and pc, but i am learning the hard way now. again, i've googled and searched macromedia but nothing.
thank you for your endless patience and kick-assery.

stupid question -- dns?
Date: 03/25/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, hosting
Please bear with me -- really, I should know how to do this.
I have a hosting account, but my domains are registered elsewhere. I'm hosting three different domains on the hosting account, which works well in that I get a zillion email addresses and can have different addresses for each domain. However, the way it's set up in the hosting is so when you type in any of the three domains, you get the same page. So, if I want three different "sites" I have to either use a "choose your destination" type thing, or make a url like www.domain1.com/page.html, which doesn't really work if the user doesn't put in the page. So I know that I have other options, but I'm not sure what they are. Am I missing a step? Is this a DNS issue? My hosting has a "custom dns record" area, but I'm not sure how to use it, or if it even matters. I don't want to mask my domains, and I can't anyway because my registrar (GoDaddy) won't let me since they are actually with the hosting account.
Thanks!

general site setup questions
Date: 03/28/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web, linux, hosting
okay, so now that i've been picking all your brains, reading all these books, and checking out all these tutorials, last night i finally said to myself, "self, i need a god damn website."
fast forward a few hours and now i registered a site and have some hosting thanks to godaddy. i have linux hosting because it said that's what is needed for php (correct?), but when I try to load my test page (which includes a .inc file), i get:
Warning: main(/include/header.inc): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/blahblahblah/1index.php on line 1
now i tried to see if the file is where i put it (website.com/include/header.inc) but, for some reason, it loads as text. meanwhile, when i try to view a .inc file online from the site i've been maintaining for work, it asks if i want to download it. this gives me the impression that it's uploading wrong, which confuses me since i'm using Fetch both times without tweaking any settings.
is this a case of me just trying to jump the gun and it's possible that while the ftp stuff is up and running, some other "stuff" needs to finish getting installed by them? also, it says i can have up to 15 (or 10, i forget) MySQL databases, yet damned if i know what i'll be needing them for. is that needed for include files to work, or is that for other stuff i may need?
tried checking out tutorials but none really answer these kinds of questions, and i want to get a vague idea of what i should be asking godaddy customer support before i just sound like i'm trying to rush things too fast.
edit: okay, now i'm confused. if i reference "/images/image.gif", so root-relative linking works in that case. yet, root-relative linking DOESN'T work for the include file. things work fine if i just make it a link (ie: include/header.inc as opposed to /include/header.inc). pretty obnoxious... how can i fix this?

cross posted to webdev...

(PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, database, asp, sql, linux, hosting
I want to ask you guys out there for some suggegtions/advice on hosting companies. I have very specific needs:
I need a host that:
1) Is reliable and has good, quick customer service
2) Supports PhP on a windows server - I need to run ASP and PhP
3) Provides at least one SQL Server not mySQL) Database if not more
4) Lets me run my own mail server (not sure if this is done through hosting or domain registration)
5) Preferably lets me add sub-domains for little to no extra cash
Right now I have Enterhost and they are awful (don't support PHP, charge out the ass, their logs don't work, you can't have sub-domains or dedicated IP's and every time I ask them for something they say no). I'm looking at maybe HostExcellence? I need something with practically no downtime, as it is for a money-making site.
On the same subject, is it possible to move files over to the new host and access it through only the IP address before switching my domain name servers? I want to get everything moved and tested on the new server and make sure all the DB calls work before it goes live. Not sure if I could do that without hostin a second, 'testing only' domain temporarily, as I've never done a large-scale transfer like this.
Any advice (besides 'Just switch to a Linux server') is helpful.

PHP installation
Date: 04/17/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, hosting, apache
Hello,
I have just recently contracted a Virtual Private Server account with a large hosting company. So far everything has gone pretty smoothly. I installed mysql and PHP and everything is running as it should. However when I installed PHP there was an option screen for me to choose what I wanted to install PHP with. I remember specifically choosing mysql support. However now when I try to run some of my pages I get this error:
Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /usr/local/apache/htdocs/config.php on line 52
Which tells me that the mysql functions were not installed.
So to my question. How do I confirm that its not installed? If its not installed how do I install it?
Thanks.
