    Ok, so I don't know if this is "HTML" or not and also it even though I'm showing another site, I want to utilize it for LJ too....

    Does anyone know how to create this effect with the pictures?::

    http://www.myspace.com/miss_meeshi

    specifically, you see how her pictures look grayish but when you mouse over them they become their original state.

    Thanks a bunch.

    P.S. If you want to throw in the code that this community uses for their links (when you mouse over, it looks like a shadow?), that'd be sweet.

  4. ideas for layout needed

    Date: 08/11/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

    I'm putting together a website to show off my coding skills (not just webdesign applications). I wanted a simple, elegant, uncluttered layout for the site. The layout I have is white with shadowed borders around a title box, a lefthand column containing navigational links, and the main column containing the content. Apparently this layout is boring and amateurish and I need to make a better one that shows how good my skills with dynamic HTML really are. I'd really appreciate any general suggestions on what would make a simple, elegant, uncluttered, yet impressive layout. Thanks in advance ^_^

  6. French Students With Penguins and Foxes

    Date: 08/12/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, browser, html, linux, microsoft

    Yesterday we commented that Firefox was receiving a push forward into corporate territory from Linux . The term we used was "piggyback". Well, today I read in CNET News.com, that thousands of secondary school students in the French region of Auvergne, will receive CDs containing free and open-source software when they return to school in September.

    The local government of Auverne will distribute 64,000 packs of CDs in an effort to interest students and their families in free and open-source software. Every student between the ages of 15 and 19 attending a school in Auvergne will be given a pack containing two CDs. The first CD contains free software for Microsoft Windows and Apple Computer's Mac OS X, including the OpenOffice.org office productivity application, the Firefox browser and the GIMP image editing application. The second CD is a Linux Live CD, allowing pupils to try the open source operating system without installing it. The Linux Live CD is based on Kaella, a French derivative of Knoppix.

    Here again, we are before another example of Linux and Firefox walking hand-in-hand. I think this is a good opportunity to promote Firefox among french students and their parents. At the same time, they are exposing themselves to the wide features of Linux. Who said penguins and foxes couldn't live in France?

  7. Jpgraph or image calls

    Date: 08/12/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: html

    I've been trying to wrap my brain around JpGraph and use it with a Postnuke module I'm writing. Is anyone here familiar with JpGraph and how it creates images?

    The problem is that the only way I know to call an image from a Postnuke template is to use the basic HTML call, and to do it properly, I'd need to send it what could be a lot of information after the ?. I don't know that even serializing the data array would work, since I will probably quickly exceed the size limit of the "get" method.

    Any suggestions on where to look for advice would be appreciated, too. I really am at a loss on how to do this.

  8. Looking for more CC

    Date: 08/12/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web

    Some of you may remember the god-awful redesign I was touting over in this post for a Chinese restaurant website.

    Well, I redid the site using the same xhtml from the redesign, but using different CSS so as to make it similar to the first site. I made a few tweaks here and there as well.

    Here's a link to the newest redesign version:
    http://www.headkablooie.com/chongs/2/index.html

    *All pages on the English version are up except the Contact page and the Directions page.

    About this company. It's a small family-owned business. The clientele ranges very widely from the homeless and the poor to the Hispanic/Black middle class to the white/Hispanic high class. The decor of the restaurant itself is varied and has no particular style to it.

    Y'know, looking at the website, the colors actually do match something in the restaurant - the chairs. And that's it.

    So with that said...

    1. Is it too plain?

    2. Should I change the header image? I think it's fine, but if it seems too simple I may just do a blend of photographs of the restaurant and its food.

    3. Should I style the navigation menu? Change the bullets, do something with a:hover, or make it look as if they were graphics instead of plain text links?

    4. Are the colors in the footer too dark, thus making the links illegible?

    Any other comments / criticisms / advice you can give would be well appreciated.

  9. newbie question

    Date: 08/12/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html

    Hi there, I'm new! I'm a beginner in HTML and Dreamweaver, although I designed interfaces for a major TV company for years (no excuse exept laziness - I had a coder sitting next to me!)
    I've been in journalism for a few years now and wanna get back into doing more visual stuff, which means I need an online portfolio...

    Basically, I can do stuff like this (not mine, by the way):
    http://www.altwear.net/frameset.htm
    With a frameset that alters when you drag the browser.

    But what I'd like to do is something like this:
    http://purelypunitive.org/
    Something that sits in the middle the whole time, with a nice background and static dimensions.
    Does anyone know how to do it in Dreamweaver, what the type of design is called and where I can find a tutorial.
    I imagine it's easy - perhaps even easier than working out all the percentages etc - but it's just a case of knowing where to start!

    Sorry for the life story there, got a bit carried away.

    Many thanks!!

  10. Mangling and HtmlAnchor in User controls

    Date: 08/12/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: html, asp, web

    Is there any way to prevent HtmlAnchor from mangling your URLs? I want it to render exactly what I put there.

    I have /trail.ascx, which renders an and exposes the properties Href and InnerText. I'm using it in /admin/user.aspx. Unfortunately, HtmlAnchor thinks it's going to be "smart" and prepend all my URLs with "../". Apparently it thinks links should be relative to the user control, not the web form. Which is bogus.

    It won't even let me attempt to treat the a element as an HtmlGenericControl!
    The base class includes the field 'mylink', but its type (System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlGenericControl) is not compatible with the type of control (System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlAnchor).

    I'm more ranting than asking for help, but it would be nice if they fixed this.

  12. two questions

    Date: 08/13/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser, css, html, web

    this has nothing to do with livejournal layout or anything... but i'm assuming that this is general HTML help and not just livejournal HTML help.

    i'm having an issue with a website i'm working on. i have the title bar and menu at the top of the page in a layer. looks great in mozilla... looks like shite in IE. the bar is in the right spot, but the menu isn't... it's on the top left, like my position, top, and left settings aren't relevant. any idea how to fix this cross browser issue?

    second problem is that the content of the site (ie, the text) scrolls over the bar and menu (which are set to fixed). how can i get the text to "disappear" when it hits the spot where the title bar is? i'm assuming it needs to be in a layer with a top margin set at a certain point where it will disappear, but i'm not sure what needs to be set. any ideas for that? this happens in both mozilla and IE, so if there's a cross-browser issue again, i need some ideas on how to fix it.

    body {	background-color: #909CB6;
    		background-image: url('topboatfinal.jpg');
    		background-repeat: no-repeat;
    		background-position: top left;
    		background-attachment: fixed }

    p.margin {margin-top: 180px}

    the background bar is in the body CSS tag, with the menu in a layer over it. the actual body content isn't in a layer, but i know i've tried to put it in one, but couldn't get the darn text to stop at a certain point when scrolling. help! :)

    so help is greatly appreciated.

    i have a mac and use safari as my internet browser on most occasions in case that matters.

    on my layout, i like the banner i have a lot since i personalized it to fit my life. i would like to have to not change it. however, i have, for more than long enough, been trying to make the words above the 3 pictures that say "userinfo" "friends" and "memories" link to the corresponding pages on my livejournal. i would love for those words to actually work...

    if anyone would be willing to give me html to make the above possible, i would be so grateful. or if it isn't an issue of html, if someone could please tell me what i have to do outside of html to make that possible. thank you.

  14. tearing my hair out over pseudo-streaming

    Date: 08/15/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: html

    I've been working on one of my clients sites, who is a small record company and they've requested that i put up a LARGE MP3 file of an interview they did. Admittedly i don't have a lot of experience with sound files, but i realized the best way to do this was to have the file stream from the server. So i Figured out how to do this by directing the link to an .m3u file, and cross my fingers and hope that it does what it's supposed to; open the file in iTunes and begin streaming.

    I tested the page in preview, and it worked perfectly, but when i uploaded the page to the server, i get a 404 when i click the link.

    I know that i'm able to do this, because the site that i got the information from on pseudo-streaming had a link to click directed to an .m3u file and it opened the streaming file in iTunes no problem... so what did i do wrong?

    check out the test page here: http://www.sonicdelirecords.com/home2.html

    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    If it matters, i'm working in OS X 10.3.3 with dreamweaver MX and previewing on IE5 and Safari.

  16. UserControl output into an XmlNode

    Date: 08/15/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: cms, html, xml

    Very cheeky of me, having only just joined this community, but may I post an awkward question?

    In a CMS-like environment, I have a list of items that is generated on the serverside using an XmlDocument to throw together XHTML tags (mainly because it's substantially easier than using a Repeater, but the why is a moot point as the project doesn't have the budget for me to change that).

    Now I have a requirement to add a new list item at the end of each list that is an "Add new item" form. It's very easy for me to write a UserControl to handle this form action, but would be relatively difficult to write this form bit as XmlElements to add into the exsiting XmlNode tree.

    Is there a way for me to get the output of the server control as an XmlNode and squish that into my XmlNode tree?

    Effectively, I want to take my existing code and making it look something like this:

         bool isInAuthoringMode;
         XmlDocument xml;
         XmlElement div;

     5   // ...

         if (isInAuthoringMode || (this.Assets != null &&
             this.Assets.Count > 0)
         {
    10      XmlElement ul = xml.CreateElement("ul");
            ul.Attributes.Append(xml.CreateAttribute("class"));
            ul.Attributes["class"].Value = "file-list";

            foreach (Asset a in this.Assets)
    15         ul.AppendChild(a.ToXml(xml));

            if (isInAuthoringMode)
               ul.AppendChild(new EditControl().ToXml(xml));

    20      div.AppendChild(ul);
         }

    Line 18 in this code block is what I'd really like to be able to do, but I know that would be being very optimistic.

    Is there any obvious way of getting "the HTML this control would generate here" out of it, even if I have to write a new method into it somewhere?

    The behavior I seek is roughly the same as if I had a Repeater like this:

    But I can't use a Repeater (for reasons too tedious to detail here).

    Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks!

  17. Re: UserControl output into an XmlNode

    Date: 08/16/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: html, xml

    A continuation of my awkward question for any C# geeks reading.

    Ok, I don'think I'm gonna find a convenient way to do it the way I'd hoped, so I've started thinking about rendering the control into a Stream and XmlDocument.Load-ing that Stream into my XmlNode hierarchy.

    Except I'm not getting anything out using Control.RenderControl(HtmlTextWriter):

       public XmlDocument RenderXmlDocument()
       {
          MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream();

          this.RenderControl(new HtmlTextWriter(new StreamWriter(stream)));

          byte[] streamContents = stream.ToArray();
          System.Text.StringBuilder sb = new System.Text.StringBuilder();

          foreach (byte tmp in streamContents)
             sb.Append(Convert.ToChar(tmp));

          HttpContext.Current.Trace.Write("EditSectionOrAsset",
             "Rendered control as \n\n[" + sb.ToString() + "]");

          XmlDocument control = new XmlDocument();
          control.Load(new XmlTextReader(new StreamReader(stream)));

          return control;
       }

    and nothing is getting written to the Trace.

    Am I gonna have to work out how to do this without using the control?

    Any and all suggestions gratefully received. Cross-posted to '[info]'owenblacker, '[info]'csharp and '[info]'ms_dot_net.

    I just tried to go to sfbc.com, as I do at least once a month, and for the first time I got a "You have chose to open blah-dy-blah which is a: JHTML file from sfbc.com. What should Firefox do with this file?" box. Why is this happening only now? I'm pretty sure I've been to SFBC since I upped to Moz 1.0.4. . . . I think . . .

    But in any event, what's going on and what should I do?

    so i'm not really html literate...i can do easy stuff that most everyone knows, but nothing really useful lol. so i thought i'd bring my question here.

    i'm trying to get the code so that your pictures (on myspace and such) are kind of faded. like they have colour, but FADED colour. then when you hover over them (since they're links), they come in full colour. i'm completely lost here, and i'm trying to help out a friend, so if anyone knows, the info would be much appreciated.

    thanks so much.
