FF absolute doesn't overlay.
Date: 10/21/07
(Web Development) Keywords: css, html
How it looks in Firefox and IE
this is the html:
Control Panel
and the css:
h1 {
text-align: center;
background-color: #E7E8D7;
padding 4px;
}
#logout {
position: absolute;
top: 2px;
right: 2px;
}
I'd like it to look like it does in IE, where the logout div fully overlays the h1. Not sure why FF isn't doing that. Any ideas on how to fix it?

CSS Please Help
Date: 10/22/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: css, html
Hello everyone. I have some basics knowledge of html. I have designed an index page in Photoshop and I would like to know how do I write the code for it. The index page is a VERY rough draft so don't judge the design :-)
What I would like to do is use CSS. I have built sites before just using HTML and it is not very convenient editing 10 pages one by one. I have read some tutorials on CSS but still having trouble begining. Basically I would like to have an external Sheet where I can edit eveything. Is there a way to have one external sheet and edit everything eventhough the text information on every page is different? Also, what do I do with the background? Do I slice it ? Or use the whole image? How do I make sure the sizes are correct (meaning for example the background image fits the page exactly as I want it). Also, how does the external sheet look like? (I mean the code...does it also begin with head, body and so on). Can someone show me a sample of an external style sheet? Please forgive the stupidity of these questions :-) If someone has time to dwell into this, I would really appreciate it. Here is the link for the index page image.

Thanks you so much in advance. Please give any info that you have...I can use all the help i can get.

I am considering setting up a web space with web based email so that the web site can send out mass HTML based emails. I am wondering what is a good PHP based open source web app that would do the trick?
They have squirrel mail on their web stie right now but i am reluctant to use that as I don't know Perl.

This may be a long shot but are there any IMP or Horde admins out there that can tell me if the latest version of Horde or IMP support saving HTML based signatures, either by pasting the html code into a box or pasting the rendered html into a box and it show up as HTML in the compose message. Is this possible and if so, is it a something the admin can turn on or off? Thanks for any help!

I don't know what's going on...
Date: 10/27/07
(Web Development) Keywords: browser, html, web
I've been doing (fairly standard) web design for over 10 years now as a hobby, and I thought I understood simple stuff like aligning text, but it seems not!
Can someone explain to me what is going on here, and how I can fix it?
http://www.briarrosegallery.co.uk/test.html
The text in the main area, with the 'welcome' gif and 'this site has been made....' is supposed to be aligned to the left. Nothing (that I can see) in my code centres it, and when I look at it in dreamweaver it appears on the left. But when I view it in a browser, either online or just using the files on my PC, it is always centred!
Please someone tell me what's going on because I've been staring at this for some time now and I just don't get it....
thanks hugely :)

Making my page work in IE vs. Firefox
Date: 10/28/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: html, web
So I'm building a website for my place of employment (my riding stable) and having a lot of fun, since I really only know basic html.
Right now I'm building it in frontpage. It doesn't have to be something super fancy, just funcional. Anyway, I just discovered the whole "div" layers thing which I like since that means that my pages should work in any setting.
However, it seems like my div layers aren't working on IE because the content of my layer goes all the way to the right of the background picture, spreading out my website so you have to scroll horizontally, which I want to not have happen.
So is it just that div layers do not work in IE? And what would be an appropriate fix to make the contents of my page stay to the left? I tried a table, with a specified width, but it didn't like that. Plus, since my background image is my banner and my navigation links are on the left side, I need the table to situated just below the "banner" part of the picture and just to the left of the links.
Here's a link for you to see what I mean:

Can anyone help with this? I'd appreciate it! Thanks very much.

Emulating XLS with a web app
Date: 10/30/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, java
I have an application which requires signifigant data entry by end users. Batch file processing is not possible. An example of the form is below, though there are 45 columns of data to enter in the app. Numeric values for left and right text boxes
End users want two features added to the form:
1) Make the Enter key function as the Tab key for all input objects. To submit data they have to click with the mouse. They enter data with the numeric keypad.
2) Allow use of up & down arrow keys to navigate vertically along the columns. So instead of tabbing back or forward three times, they could simply arrow up/down to the box above or below.
How feasible are these requests? With existing javascript validation I'm already working with a bloated HTML page. I'm afraid adding in arrow key functionality will only add to it (unless there is a simple way of doing it?)
Thanks!

design moving out of place

I'm working on a website based on a free design template and I've run into a problem. When I add more text to one of the pages the whole design jumps a few millimeters to the left. Take a look at the site here. Click on the "Another tab" tab to see how the design changes. Why does this happen and what can I do about it? This template is slightly out of my league when it comes to html knowledge, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Help Help HELP!

(WebDesign) Keywords: php, html, web
Hi guys. I come to you out of desperation!
Well, not desperation, but I am pretty dang confused.
I just bought myself a domain recently with godaddy.com, but now I have no idea what to do with it. What I wanted to do with this domain was just to have an upload.php page available to myself only (possibly password protected or something?) so I could have a place to upload all of my art and garbage like that. I just got sick of using photobucket and crap, so I thought I'd do this.
A friend of mine also had this setup. She had a website (also domain purchased from godaddy.com) and it wasn't... really a website. You'd go to the main page, ie www.whatever.org and it would just be a filler page she designed that said 'coming soon' and behind that, there was a url that was accessible to herself only for uploading.
I have no idea how to achieve this. I have the php script saved as a .html document but I don't know what to do with it!
Help?

Help With Web Design Project
Date: 11/06/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: html, web
I'm sorry to be asking about this since I know it is all supposed to be very simple, but for some reason I cannot get many things in my web design project to work. I think all my problems are with the attributes, or have exactly I have things positioned. What we’re working on now is setting margins, doing hotspots and image maps, and colors. I can’t figure it out by myself and html help sites on the Intenet only make me more confused. The probeject is over and one with (and I wasn't able to complete it >>), but I don't want to fall too far behind, so I need to know what I've done wrong. Please help me by looking over my code and instructions to see if you know what's wrong! ;_;

The only thing that doesn’t work on this is the background color, which is supposed to be ivory, but is white. This is a problem on all of the other pages, too. The marin may be wrong, too, but since it's something you can't obviously see here I can't be sure.

This is where everything gets confusing. This is the only page I’ve posted because this format is basically the same for all the other pages. The hotposts for dc100 won’t work, the background color won’t work, the text doesn’t look like it should, the images and text won't show up,and the margins aren’t right. Did I put the margin attributes in the right place? I don’t know if I have any of this right, but didn’t put in a semicolon where I should or what.
Here are the instructions:
2. Go to the index.htm file. Change the background color of the page to ivory and set the size of the top margin to 100 pixels wide by 140 pixels high. Set the border width of this inline image to 128 pixels wide by 40 pixels high. Set the border width of this inline image to 0 pixels. Save changes to your file.
3. Go to the pixal.htm file. Make the following style changes to the page:
Set the background color to ivory and display the background image file back.gif. The image file should be tiled only in the y-direction and should scroll with the web page.
Set the size of the left margin to 185 pixels.
4. Directly after the tag, insert a paragraph containing the inline image menu.gif. This is the image that contains the list of links that will be displayed along the left margin of the page. Apply the following styles to this image:
Float the image on the left margin.
Set the border width to 0 pixels.
Set the size of the left margin to -185 pixels; this will have the effect of shifting the image to the left margin.
Set the dimensions of the image to 173 pixels wider by 295 pixels high.
Set the value of the alt attribute to an empty string, "".
5. Set the dimensions of the logo.jpg inline image to 281 pixels wide by 96 pixels high.
6. Change the color of the two horizontal lines in this page to red.
7. Apply the following style changes to the address element.
Display the address text in an Arial, Helvetica, or sans-serif font.
Set the font size to 0.7em.
Change the font style to normal.
8. Apply the following style changes to the paragraph containing the list of links (located below the address element):
Display the address text in an Arial, Helvetica, or sans-serif font.
Set the font size to 0.7em.
9. At the bottom of the file, above the closing tag, insert an image map named "dcpages" containing the following hotspots:
A rectangular hotspot pointing to the pixal.htm file with coordinates (1,1) and (81,15). The alternate text is "Home".
A rectangular hotspot for the dc250.htm file with the coordinates (23,50) and (64,62). The alternate text is "DC100".
A rectangular hotspot for the dc250.htm file with the coordinates (23,64) and (64,79). The alternate text is DC250".
A rectangular hotspot for the dc500.htm file with the coordinates (23,81) and (64,95). The alternate text is "DC500".
10. Apply the dcpages image map to the menu.gif inline image, located at the top of the page.
11. Save changes to the file.
12. Go to the dc100.htm file and repeat Steps 3 through 11 above. Also, display the h1 heading "DC100" in blue Arial, Helvetica, or sans-serif font. Align the inline image dc100.jpg with the page's right margin. Save your changes to the file.
13. Go to the dc250.htm file and apply the same style changes that you applied to the dc100.htm file. Also, do this for the rest of the files. Save your changes.
Again, if you can help me at all I won’t be able to give anything to you, but you will have my enternal gratitude. ;_;

I'd prefer not to network the computers, but,,
Date: 11/09/07
(Software) Keywords: html, google
I have an old WindowsME computer which still runs fine, but wanted a laptop, so I bought a 13" white MacBook, which I dearly love.
I need to find a program which will allow me to run my .exe programs on Mac's OSX.
I don't want to have to purchase a new mac version of my .html program, and I prefer my older version of PSP v.7.
I may need to interface CuteFTP (of course I have the old old version) too.
I ordered the new Leopard opsys disk for $10, but I have a feeling that I'd still be looking at purchasing some version of Windows XP (pro?) to run BootCamp, which I'd prefer NOT to run 2 operating systems IF I can find a way to convert my programs for macuse. (The last "real" windows disks I have that are not oem are Win98SE!)
I've googled + found at least 3 programs that would allow .exe files to run on mac osx (not BootCamp or Parallels), but I don't really understand what's involved (I fear messing up my new laptop) + I don't want to spend mega bucks on WindowsXP = only to have my MacBook run slower.
Let me know if networking my older computer to my mac (I have Airport Express) would be the best solution under these circumstances. I'd consider doing that if it's the best + least expensive method, and if I can figure out how to do it.
Tia.
