1. Question for all Business Systems Analysts

    Date: 05/28/06     Keywords: technology

Hello there! I'm Andrew and I got my B.S. in Information Management and Technology about a year ago. I'm currently in the Technical Support field but I'd like to branch away from it and move into Systems Analysis.

My question is: What is the best grad degree to pursue for this? Is it something more specialized within IT? An MBA? I have no idea what I should do because currently employers look at my resume and think all I can do is technical support (I've got about 3 years experience doing this).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  2. anybody familiar with DesktopStandard PolicyMaker?

Date: 05/23/06     Keywords: software, asp, security

    hello folks,

does anyone have any experience running this software?

    http://www.desktopstandard.com/PolicyMakerApplicationSecurity.aspx

it basically allows applications to run with different privileges than the user that runs them (for
example, granting local administrative access for specific apps that require it). we're looking to be
able to remove our AutoCAD users from the local administrative groups of their workstations.

if you've got any experience with/comments on this tool or the publisher, i'd love to hear from you :)

Does anyone know of a port of the fuser command in *nix or perhaps an alternate method to us under a Win32 environment

Trying to build an automated system that utilyzes file transfers and need to be sure the transfer is complete before continuing.

  4. Indexing Documents

    Date: 05/04/06     Keywords: web

    OK, here is the scenario...

We are looking to create a searchable file repository on our internal web server (intranet) to replace an out-of-control network share.

File types are all over the grid, but the predominant ones are pdf, doc, xls and ppt. There also some others, but they are not as important.

Is there a reliable way to extract the text to allow it to be searched? I have found various products that accomplish this, but these can get quite pricey or are platform specific. What I am looking for is a methodology that can be utilized regardless of the platform.

I don't want to rely on system utilities like htdig or the IIS Index tool. I can open doc and xls and see the text, so I could potentially search them, but there is no discernible text in the pdf file I tried.

    TIA

  5. The nature of SMTP virus detection

    Date: 04/27/06     Keywords: virus, antivirus

I have a question about SMTP mass mail viruses.

My client is running Symantec Corporate Antivirus with AV Exchange as well.

In the last two days the system has reported a small flood of virus infected attachments coming from inside the SMTP transport.
As far as i can tell, the system is saying the viruses are coming from inside the network.

The "from" addresses are all bogus but of course contain the clients domain name.

I am as I type this running a full virus sweep on all the connected PC's and the 2 servers. So far nothing is showing up (if only Symantec AV recorded IP as well).

Now I am thinking that these are actually INCOMING viruses, probably addressed to bogus addresses.

Am I right in that assessment? If so, why on earth do the Symantec logs show the "target" as the "author"?

  6. Practical question about Cisco ATA

    Date: 04/27/06     Keywords: no keywords

Colleagues, may be someone know, how to force Cisco ATA to send DTMF-signals in SIP-messages INFO?
I think, such function depends on AudioMode adjustment, but changing of "DTMF Transmission Method" doesn't help :-( May by it is necessary to change anything alse?

    Date: 03/23/06     Keywords: microsoft

Has anyone here successfully used ldap to change passwords?

I am writing a small ColdFusion app to change passwords for our technicians.

I found an article with requirements to do so, but I have a hard time believing it is as difficult as it is stated.

  9. question on test environments

    Date: 03/06/06     Keywords: database

    so - here's the scenario.

    production is in forest 1
test has been set up in forest 2
100+ gpo objects in the production environment

test environment naming convention is: test.production environment's name

now, what i want to do is mimic the AD structure of the production environment in the test environment... as to OU's, GPO's, accounts, permissions, etc.

how do i best go about doing this? active directory migration tool? backup the AD database and gpo object folder and copy them over? either or both not possible?

some of my questions... is any of the above possible, or do i have to manually re-create the ou's and accounts/permissions because of the test environment being a different name? or does it matter?

Date: 02/26/06     Keywords: mysql, sql, linux

How can I limit the number of mysqld processes (threads)? Under Linux.

I have the following options in my.cnf:

    set-variable = max_connections=3
    set-variable = thread_concurrency=3

But I still have 11 child threads of mysqld-max. How can I limit this number?

  11. Exchange2003 replication or something.

    Date: 02/24/06     Keywords: software, spam

I just need a little clue/best practice info.

My main office has an exchange server that hosts multiple email domains

the primary domain for most people is domainA.com and secondary wouldbe be domainB.com.cn

    --
My company is starting up a new office in china, since access mail via pop3/OWA/terminal services is a pain due to frequent large attachments (>15mb), I've decided to setup a exchange2003 server in china.

    These are my aims.

I'd like things done so that I don't have to pay for a second antispam software etc.

in otherwords, I'd like all mail to be received by my main mail server, archived/journalled , then mail for domainB.com.cn is replicated/relayed over to the china server, for some users who operate in both domainA.com domainB.com.cn, to replicate their domainA.com mailbox over as well.

when mail is sent at the domainB.com.cn server, it should be relayed back to the main office to be journalled then sent out

    What are your suggestions?

  12. techs I need help. thanks

    Date: 02/20/06     Keywords: virus

I went to fix this lady's computer. She had a virus which I successfully removed it. Then she told me she needed her printer installed. She had just bought it and it never worked on her computer. It's a USB printer. I reinstalled it for her and attempted to print but to no avail. I thought maybe it was the printer and I had an extra USB printer in my car that I also tried to install but didnt work. I also tried to use my USB jump drive on her computer and it would work for a few seconds then die on me. In fact it kept giving me a weird I/O error message that I probably should have written down. ;p So now I'm thinking she has a problem with her USB ports. I installed the latest USB drivers for her and still to no avail. I even got out a new PCI USB card. That didn't work either. Her computer is an older machine running Windows 2000 that was upgraded from Windows ME. I totally gave up and told her if I found out how to fix it, I'd come back. I'm thinking maybe she has to upgrade her BIOS now or maybe there is some option in her bios. which I never done before in my life and wasn't about to do it for the first time on her computer. Any ideas?

  13. Microsoft Exchange/Outlook Calendar Alternative

    Date: 02/16/06     Keywords: microsoft

    Hi

Our MD is putting pressure on me and my staff to start using Outlook as our standard mail client, chiefly so he can make us of Microsoft Exchange calendar features.

Obviously we'd rather mutilate ourselves with rusty breadknives than use Outlook to collect e-mails.

Is anybody aware of a preferably open source, or relatively cheap Windows XP based alternative (or failing that just an alternative, anything, please), that would allow us to interact with the Exchange calendar, whilst continuing to use regular, secure e-mail clients for sending and receiving e-mail?

I've had a look at Mozilla calendar (potentially quite useful as quite a few of us use Firefox and Thunderbird), but I don't think it's compatible.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cheers.

    Alex.

  14. SharePoint ignoring site groups?

    Date: 02/14/06     Keywords: web, microsoft

    Anyone have experience with SharePoint?

I am using the MicroSoft BI Portal Sample Application for Windows
SharePoint Services. My site is something like http://myserver/bip

I have created 3 document libraries, one each for 3 different groups
within the company (Marketing, Sales, and Finance). I have also
created 3 site groups, so that each site group has access to only their
    document library.

All of the default groups remain in tact.

I have assigned users to each of the groups, some users are in multiple
    groups.

The problem is that some users cannot see any of the document libraries
at all. They authenticate and are taken to the BI Portal site, but
then can see no data beyond that. (They can see the web parts, but no
    data linked to those parts).

Other users, who are set up identically to the first users, can see
exactly what they are supposed to see.

I have had users reboot, clear cache/cookies/history, and there is no
change in behavior. I have even put some users into the administrators
group to see if that would work, but still no change. It's as if
SharePoint is ignoring the site groups for some users, and not for
    others.

Anyone have any ideas on how to clear this up?

  15. Process monitoring on Windows Server

    Date: 02/03/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've been trying to troubleshoot an issue that doesn't give any clues in the Event Log.  What's happening is that somehow, winlogon.exe is getting hung up, along with some other processes (some backup utilities).  This is happening on a remote system far away, so it's hard for me to do much monitoring when I can't log in, and the only way for me to get control back has been to reboot the system. :)

What utilities have you guys used to, say, log process CPU usage over a period of time?  I was thinking something along the lines of pslist...

I'd thought I'd ask around, my users are having problems with \\tsclient\c\whatever being very slow, I'm not sure whether its "by design" or I have interfering stuff like antivirus scans etc going on, suffice to say it can take 1 minute or more just to display the content from any folder.

is there anything I can do to speed this up? otherwise users are currently using outlook web access just to transfer files around.

  19. virtual hosting

Date: 01/03/06     Keywords: html, web, hosting, google

I need some iis help here. (or meta refresh/redirect?)

I'm not a web guy by trade, but this thing falls on my lap anyway.

    --
ok: I just did a domain transfer of mydomainB.com from some china registrar to godaddy.com

godaddy.com doesn't seem to have URL forwarding, only domain forwarding and A and Cnames, mx

(as opposed to the one i use for my own private domain www.domainbooking.com)

I just turned on domain forwarding to point to mydomainA.com/mywebsite but I'm not sure if it will corrupt the mx entries for mail. (which should point to mail.mydomainB.com , in turn A for mail.mydomainB.com = 12.34.56.78)

assuming it does and I reverse the domain forwarding.
then what I have is that my current A for www.mydomainA.com = 11.22.33.44
and my new A for www.mydomainB.com points to 11.22.33.44 as well

but they are supposed to be two distinct websites.

so I need to redirect by url? perhaps on my index.html. those that originate from www.mydomainA.com proceed to index1.html and those from www.mydomainB.com proceed to 11.22.33.44/mywebsite/index.html

I think this falls under the category of virtual hosting, i've been searching google for bit with not much luck.
I'm not sure host headers work for wan/internet domain names, and godaddy/A addressing doesn't quite allow you to specify port numbers either.

to add to the complication, the website is also hosting an exchange outloook mobile access site. so http://www.mydomainA.com/exchange should be accessible.

so how do I do this?
