1. Knowledge Base Software

Date: 05/14/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, java, web, linux, hosting

The company I work for is a Linux web hosting company. And we desperately need a decent knowledge base system. Primarily for internal use, but also so that we can provide direct links back to the KB for customers to read to help us streamline our help desk responses.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I've been looking into Twiki, but that requires an enormous amount of setup time. And now I'm looking at FreeMind, but that isn't HTML, its a java applet.

  2. Is it okay to do this?

Date: 05/14/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: php, browser, html, java

I have been wondering... How do I pass on some data to a html file given that cookies are disabled on the client's computer, and the server does not support scripting - PHP, Perl, CGI, etc. ??? The problem has to be solved on the client's side.

Let's say we have two files: p1.htm and p2.htm. The JavaScript in p1.htm wants to load p2.htm into the browser. But p1.htm needs to pass certain values to p2.htm. How do you do it?

    Here is what I found:

p1.htm will load p2.htm and insert the data into the address field like this:

    location.href = 'p2.htm#mydata123';

The JavaScript function in p2.htm will read the "location.href" variable and remove everything that precedes the '#' sign. What's left is "mydata123"!!!

This way, I can pass parameters from one file to the next.

My question is, IS THIS 'LEGAL'?

What the script is doing here is basically tell the browser to load p2.htm and go to LABEL mydata123. Of course, there is no such label in p2.htm, so the browser will just go to the beginning of the page.

  4. javascript click tracker

Date: 05/18/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, browser, html, sql, java, tracker

I'm trying to create a javascript click tracker, but I'm having a problem. The setup is very simple so I'll just give the code.

    index.html
    ---------------

    A Link

tracker.php simply inserts the url of the link into mysql.

The problem is very strange. Everything works fine if the files served from my local machine. If I upload it to the server things get weird. It doesn't work with firefox from my office (3 different machines and 3 different versions), but it works with firefox from every other place (home, friends, etc). It works fine with IE and Konqueror. Note: I did change localhost in the js function to the proper value for the server. It works if I go directly to the URL that's in the javascript so it seems that that line isn't exucted by my local firefox browsers. Does anyone have an ideas on this? Is there a free click tracker script that any of you know of? (free as in I can see the code)

  9. Help with Mouse Clicks

Date: 05/20/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: java, web, seo

Hello all. I am currently desinging a website for and antique shop in my community and I need some help on trying to figure out how to achieve a certain look and code.

This is what I have so far:
    http://shoppicayune.com/A/Antiques/iframe_page2.htm
Please note the text link at the top. Basically what I want to achieve is when you click on one of images surrounding the iframe, it loads the image into the iframe. However I am not very sure how I would go about doing this or if I using an iframe is even the best method.

I have managed to find a script that allows me to achieve what basically want to do, however I want the images to go all the way around the center large display window as I have in the page linked above, and I want it to load the center large image with a click instead of a mouseover.
Here is the link to the script I have:
    http://shoppicayune.com/picayuneflorists/index.htm

I am not to savy with Javascript, but I have Front page and I can edit a script if I have one.

Does anyone have any advice about how I could go about achieving this look or a script that could do what I want? Also if anyone knows any other communities that I might find better information surrounding this topic, that would also be helpful.

Thank you in advance for you suggestions and advice.

  10. What program do you use for your JavaScript editing?

Date: 05/20/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: java

Do you like it? How much was it?

Actually, I'm looking for a very bare-bones program, but am interested in all of the available editors, nonetheless.

Ideally, I would use something smarter than Notepad but something that still had a fast start-up and editing time. For instance, Dreamweaver has so many other features it's really inefficient to use it to just edit JavaScript code.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  11. Fedex shipping calculator in PHP?

Date: 05/21/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, java, google

Hi, I need to set up a Fedex shipping calculator in PHP for work. I was looking around the Fedex Ship Manager API, but it says it only supports Java, C/C++, VB and JScript. I've also searched Google to try to find a solution, but to no avail (all the "solutions" I found did not work). This seems like it should be a very simple problem. Does anyone know if there is already a simple solution available or if I could reverse-engineer a script in another language? Thanks in advance for your help!

  12. positioning

Date: 05/21/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, java

    Hello,

Is there a way to center the content of a page vertically using css ?
What I'm looking for is the equivalent of something like :
    #container { margin:0px auto; }
This would center the content horizontaly, but setting top and bottom margin to auto won't center it vertically.
The idea is that all the content would go in a div, and depending on the screen resolution, there would be margins above and below.
I know one can detect a screen resolution using javascript, but I was wondering if there was a way to do this using css, so it would be W3C valid, as the "align" property is deprecated for div.
    Any idea ?
    Thx all for you help.

  13. CSS in IE6???

Date: 05/22/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, java, web

I just tried setting up my first website. I'm not a professional, but I am trying to teach myself about web development. I set up this website by creating .htm docutments in Dreamweaver. I wrote out all the code myself and didnt really use any of Dreamweaver's features.

So far I've only been able to test it in IE6 and AOL (using IE6). In both, I recieve error messages telling me that AOL or IE6 must close due to an error. I predefined the window size using a javascript, but in AOL the size comes up incorrectly. With or without this resizing script, the error messages still occur, and AOL/IE6 needs to close. Here is the site. (BTW, this site is only meant for family and friends...these bags are not for sale to the general public.)

I've been researching this, and read that IE6 can have some doctype issues. The doctype on all of my pages is this: !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN", and shouldnt cause any problems.

What is the best solution? I ljcut my CSS code below. Is the syntax wrong, or not strict enough, so that it's causing errors? If I want my page to be universally viewed, should I not be using CSS? I had heard that using frames is outdated, and I really like the control CSS gives me over everything on the page.

Thanks for any and all help!!! It will be very much appreciated! (I apologize for any x-posting.)

All of the below code is formatted correctly on the actual page. The syntax is correct, and the entire website works correctly when I test it in Internet Explorer through Dreamweaver.

Date: 05/26/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, xml, java

I've been doing a little studying into the javascrip HttpRequest object. In addition to not finding a good tutorial on the system, I haven't found anything about how to use it in combination with PHP.

The specific problem I have is that I need to send a large block of text to the server in order to get specialized list of data. Most of the examples I see either send the data via GET -- which wouldn't work for this size of data -- or through the use of a small bit of XML. Moreover, I'm not sure how to write the receiving script.

Can anyone enlighten me, or in the least, point me to a good tutorial?

So, what do you all think? I'm just musing here, but since the new array object methods are not part of the ECMAscript specification can we still tout conformance to "just the specification and only the specification" as a Firefox feature? Are these the first steps in the dreaded embrace and extend? Would such superfluous arguments be mitigated if such constructs and methods were enforced as not usable, or maybe just flagged as warnings in the console when called outside of XUL jars?
