  3. Self-contained browser

Date: 02/20/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, html, virus, web, spyware, linux

If you're a Windows or Linux user (the former especially), and you ever need to do a bit of surfing on a particularly shady website, and you want to protect your PC from any nasty spyware or other malicious code that might be present, the usual tactic is to rummage around for hardware, build a sacrificial system, install an operating system and applications, add it to your LAN, and get to the site in question.

Instead, try the VMware Browser Appliance. It's a self-contained copy of Firefox (running on Ubuntu Linux, but that's largely irrelevant -- Firefox is Firefox, from a user standpoint) that runs as "virtual machine" on your computer. When it runs, it runs inside its own window, not just on screen, but in memory, and the hard drive. It's completely boxed in: nothing you load can get to your other applications, or your hard drive, or onto your computer in any way other than inside that pre-defined box. It makes a great environment for testing website design, or testing a web application you're writing, or investigating a potential virus site, or anything else that you would be more comfortable not using your main PC for. You can configure it to either wipe itself completely clean every time you use it, or to retain the settings (bookmarks, cookies, etc) between uses.

  8. disk read errors

Date: 03/08/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, linux

I really dislike asking for help, but I'm at a complete loss at what to do. My computer is a home-made variety, Intel motherboard+chip, Samsung hardrives. OS is Windows XP, altough I don't think that matters with what's going on. I have an anti-virus - Norton - but again, I don't think that's made much of a difference in the past week and a half.

First off, yes, I know about cable placement and setting jumpers.

So. I had two hardrives, an 80 gig and a 40 gig. The 40 was the master with the OS and the 80 was the slave. About a week ago I decided I didn't like this setup and wanted to put the newer hardrive as the master and the older as a slaved backup. Soooo, I move files around, remove all the partitions from my 80, repartition, format, install, and move all my files back over to my 80. Get the 40 ready for being formatted, reboot, and BAM - there's a black screen reading "Disk Read Error."

I tried everything I knew. Put the 40 in charge again and tried to read the 80 from Windows XP. If I clicked on it I got either "F: or whatever path it was is an invalid parameter", "F: is not formatted" and "Cyclic redundancy error." Checking the properties of the 80 gig showed that it was reading the drive as having 0 space used, 0 space free, with a file structure of RAW. Since this was above me, I took it to a friend's house who is more computer-savvy.

We tried it on a Linux box. It could find the drive but could not read. Put it in their Windows box. Found the drive, could not read. Ran chkdsk on it (multiple times) and it just came up with a bunch of bad sectors and failed after the first step. Right now the busted 80 is still at their house, my friend is still trying to get any data off it. I've lost hope - we believe the physical disk was scratched.

Now, this wouldn't bother me too badly (this stuff happens after all..) except I bought a new hardrive yesterday. 80 gig. Stuffed it in as master. Installed Windows. This morning, went to access my 40 gig - the good drive that has lasted me for a long time - and BAM. Not formatted/other error messages. RAW file structure. Boot it up as master - Disk Read Error. Swapped out the ribbon cable for a new one - nothing changed.

Right now I have the 40 unplugged and am just sitting here sweating, waiting for my black hole inside my box to devourer my brand-new 80. I've had this computer for about a year and a half now, some parts longer than that (the 40 I've had for nearly three years and the old 80 for about a year) and I've never had a problem like this. I don't care about recovering my hardrives anymore. I just want to figure out what is wrong with this thing, why it's destroying hardrives, and what needs to be replaced/done to keep my system from completely melting down. Cause I'm really scared right now.

And I'm a college student putting myself through school. I can't afford these sorts of problems right now.

  9. image blocking

Date: 03/10/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: linux

For various reasons I am trying to block images from specific servers. My solution so far has been to amend /etc/hosts and redirect all traffic to those servers to 127.0.0.1
This has worked OK when the images are located at http://bad_server.com/image.jpg, however several of the images use sub-domains. Pictures from sub-domain.bad_server.com/image.jpg are getting through. I've tried adding the entry *.bad_server.com and just bad_server.com but nothing seems to work, any ideas?
(using a mac btw, so linux/unix solutions should work too.)
[.EDIT] I tried the servers IP too. still no good.
oh yes, and there's an unknown quantity of subdomains, I want to block them all, otherwise it would be nice and simple...
[.Edit] Fixed, talk about trying to do things the hard way...

  10. Events: A Introduction to the Model of GUI programing

Events: A Introduction to the Model of GUI programing

    Xah Lee, 2005-05

In Graphical User Interface (GUI) programing, there's the concept of event. For example, moving the mouse, clicking a mouse button, switch to a different window, hitting a key. The software needs to respond to these things. The way it works is that, the programer writes code that draw buttons, menus, windows etc. And the programer write his program so that it knows the mouse position, mouse click, keyboard press, or any other signal from input devices. The programer also writes code so that for example if a mouse click happened, and its position is inside a button, then some function is called as a reaction.

All this is very tedious and very complex. What happens today is that most of the common tasks for GUI software are already written as a package called framework. That is to say, the codes to draw GUI elements such as windows or buttons or dialogue popups, and the detection of input signals such as button clicking or menu selection or keyboard inputs, are all integrated together as a pre-written set of code. The programer is relieved of writing these tedious code. Instead, he call predefined functions in the framework to deal with many issues related to creating a GUI.

In such a framework, it is still quite complicated. Such framework often comes in the guise of Operating System Developer's Kit. For example, writing application in Mac OS uses Apple's kit called Cocoa, Carbon, Toolbox, and there's also Microsoft's Foundation Classes (MFC) and Linux has frameworks such as Gnome, and Java offers its own GUI framework called AWK and Swing.

All these frameworks are incompatible with each other, but the model they use are basically the same. In today's personal computing, one basically have graphical “Windows”, and in it one has “Menus”, and “Buttons”, “Dialogues”. User point or click on these to tell the software to do specific things. For the programer, the way it works in these frameworks is like this:

In the framework, GUI elements such as Windows, Menus, Buttons are collectively called “widgets”. For each GUI element there is a pre-defined function that draws them. The programer calls these functions to draw them. When a user act on these widgets such as pressing a button, the widget's function will receive a signal. Each widget may be associated with different types of signals. For example, Windows can be dragged or resized, while a button can be clicked, a menu has items to be selected. When a Window is dragged, the corresponding widget function might get a signal that is the positions of beginning and ending coordinates. When a window is closed, the widget function will get a “close” signal. When a button is clicked, that button's widget function will get a “click” signal. When a menu is pulled, that menu's widget function will get a signal of the selected item.

For each widget-drawing function the programer called, he assigns to it a function called “event handler”. These event handlers are called and are given the signals when user acts on them. For example, when a button is clicked, the button widget function automatically calls its event handler function and gives it “clicked” as argument.

The programer doesn't have to worry about how the button function knew when it is being pressed. All that is implemented in the framework. The GUI programer today only needs to call these widget function as to design the appearance of the window, where the button shows up, what menu items are there etc, and assign a function (event handler) to each of these functions, so that when these GUI elements are hit, the widge functions call the programer's event handler functions, which do whatever computation the software is actually supposed to do.
HTML, DOM, JavaScript, and the Browser as a GUI Application Platform

In writing Web Application using JavaScript, the technologies involved are HTML, DOM, JavaScript, and the Browser.

The HTML (and related technologies such as XML and CSS) are used to show the GUI widgets and content. DOM ascribes to HTML a standard definition of structural meaning so that it can be manipulated programmatically. And, JavaScript is the language that actually lets the programer program what happens. While the browser, is the underlying engine that ties everything together. It takes care of rendering the HTML, and takes care of knowing all the mouse positions and register all events (user actions) such as keystroks, mouse movement, clicks, menu pulls, window closing etc. It takes care of interpreting the JavaScript code, and will execute them when a event happens.

Here, the GUI is the browser window and HTML elements (radio checklist, check box list, menu list, text field, button, window pane/frame etc.). The events (user actions) are defined by DOM. They are for example: oncopy, ondrag, onload, onclick, onkeydown, onmouseover. And the actions (event handlers) are JavaScript functions the user writes.

For example, it may be desired to change the cursor icon to a finger when the mouse is moved over a hyperlink. So, a hyperlink (considered as a widget) has a MouseOver event, and the programer can assign a event handler to it, so when a mouse hovers over a link, that function is called, and the function's code changes the mouse pointer icon to a finger icon.

For list of events defined by DOM, see for example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/reference/events.asp
Assign Event Handlers to GUI Widgets

To associate a event handler to a HTML widget, there are two ways. One way is to put the code directly inside the HTML tag, like this:

    Hover Over Me!

Alternatively, a cleaner way is to give a ID to a HTML element, and in your JavaScript assign a event handler to that ID. This way, your HTML/XML will have a clean structure, while all behavior related code are moved to your JavaScript's source code. Here's how the code would look like:

    Hover Over Me!

In this example, when mouse hovers over the P tag, the browser sends a signal (called “event”) to the JS engine embedded in the browser, and it calls the doThis function (which is your event handler), and your function do whatever you had it do. (change color, open a window, send email, send form, pop up a dialog... etc.)

  12. general site setup questions

Date: 03/28/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web, linux, hosting

okay, so now that i've been picking all your brains, reading all these books, and checking out all these tutorials, last night i finally said to myself, "self, i need a god damn website."

fast forward a few hours and now i registered a site and have some hosting thanks to godaddy. i have linux hosting because it said that's what is needed for php (correct?), but when I try to load my test page (which includes a .inc file), i get:

Warning: main(/include/header.inc): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/blahblahblah/1index.php on line 1

now i tried to see if the file is where i put it (website.com/include/header.inc) but, for some reason, it loads as text. meanwhile, when i try to view a .inc file online from the site i've been maintaining for work, it asks if i want to download it. this gives me the impression that it's uploading wrong, which confuses me since i'm using Fetch both times without tweaking any settings.

is this a case of me just trying to jump the gun and it's possible that while the ftp stuff is up and running, some other "stuff" needs to finish getting installed by them? also, it says i can have up to 15 (or 10, i forget) MySQL databases, yet damned if i know what i'll be needing them for. is that needed for include files to work, or is that for other stuff i may need?

tried checking out tutorials but none really answer these kinds of questions, and i want to get a vague idea of what i should be asking godaddy customer support before i just sound like i'm trying to rush things too fast.

edit: okay, now i'm confused. if i reference "/images/image.gif", so root-relative linking works in that case. yet, root-relative linking DOESN'T work for the include file. things work fine if i just make it a link (ie: include/header.inc as opposed to /include/header.inc). pretty obnoxious... how can i fix this?

    10GB space
    Unmetered Bandwidth
    2 Ip addresses
Full root access (linux server - fedora core 3)
    Full cPanel

If anyone has any links or knows of any companies that are similar (or better) to this, then please comment the details here - I'm not so fussed about having 2 ip addresses but I definitely need to have a full cPanel installed already!

Date: 04/01/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: java, linux, microsoft

Does anyone use SolarisX86 on a regular pc that is a non server?

I am a former BSD user and I do not like Linux in its current state. Dont mean to flame the linux fanatics out there but its alot of work compared to my FreeBSD experience to install and maintain a system with ease with a degree in stability in its packages.

I need Java and 3d support so NetBSd and OpenBSD is not an option. FreeBSD is too unstable and no longer works wiht my hardware well like 4.x did.

I need Java5 for school and the only non Microsoft OS I can think of is solaris. I intend to use www.blastwave.com or is it www.blastwave.net? ... to update solaris10 with modern packages. I am aware there is opensolaris but it seems like alot of work from the beta builds of solaris11 with tons of patches so I am skeptical.

I would like to use something more modern than gnome 2.8 as that is what blastwave includes. Any suggestions on how to upgrade?

Also for those who have used solaris on the desktop is it really worth it? What are the differences over Linux?

    Thanks

I want to ask you guys out there for some suggegtions/advice on hosting companies. I have very specific needs:

    I need a host that:
    1) Is reliable and has good, quick customer service
    2) Supports PhP on a windows server - I need to run ASP and PhP
    3) Provides at least one SQL Server not mySQL) Database if not more
    4) Lets me run my own mail server (not sure if this is done through hosting or domain registration)
    5) Preferably lets me add sub-domains for little to no extra cash

Right now I have Enterhost and they are awful (don't support PHP, charge out the ass, their logs don't work, you can't have sub-domains or dedicated IP's and every time I ask them for something they say no). I'm looking at maybe HostExcellence? I need something with practically no downtime, as it is for a money-making site.

On the same subject, is it possible to move files over to the new host and access it through only the IP address before switching my domain name servers? I want to get everything moved and tested on the new server and make sure all the DB calls work before it goes live. Not sure if I could do that without hostin a second, 'testing only' domain temporarily, as I've never done a large-scale transfer like this.

Any advice (besides 'Just switch to a Linux server') is helpful.
