tab completion lost, please help
Date: 01/31/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: linux
I am currently running gnome on debian linux 3.1 on a hp intel machine at work and the all the terminals seem to have stop recognising the tab key
The keyboard driver is Generic 105-key (Intl) PC
This happening after my machine lost my networked home directory and stopped functioning. In order to resurrect the machine my gnome settings gconf had to be deleted.
Once I was logged in I was able to return the desktop toolbar to looking how it did, turn off the system bell and start work again
Unfortunately now terminals (I have tried the standard terminal, gnome multi term and xterm) have stopped putting any character on stdout when the tab key is pressed. This means that tab completion no longer works which as you may appreciated is more than a little annoying, ctrl D still works, alt-tab to switch between windows still works and the tab key still produces a response in editors like Vi and XEmacs and also in firefox and thunderbird so it isn't as straight forward as the keyboard mapping is wrong (it still appears to be standard UK)
Any ideas as to what might of gone wrong?, Restarting the machine doesn't seem to of worked
I have made inquiries with my own systems team but they haven't answered yet presumably as at the end of the day this isn't the end of the world
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
edit:Sorry forgot to mention this is using tcsh shell not bash
edit: tab completion of environment variable name still works incase its relavant

Web Development/Design in Linux?
Date: 02/11/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, linux, apache
I hate to be a bit obtuse. However, I wanted to gather people's thoughts on using Linux as a web development/design platform.
Are there any users out there that have used Linux and/or Windows in this capacity?
If so, what web dev/design tools for Linux do you find helpful and/or comparable to Windows-based applications (outside of GIMP, Apache, MySQL, LDAP and PHP-Eclipse, of course)?
Finally, if your user requirements for a website gave you the choice of either Mono or PHP, which would you pick and why?
Thanks in advance!

Hackers targeting your home LAN router / firewall
Date: 02/17/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: browser, java, security, web, linux
This applies to any platform that runs Java, be it Mac, PC Windows or PC Linux. This also applies to any browser that supports Javascript, including all versions of IE, Firefox and Safari.
If you own or buy a Linksys, DLink or Netgear wired or wireless router/firewall box to allow you to share your broadband throughout your household, make sure you change the administrator password on that unit from the factory default. It doesn't matter if your router does not accept administrative connections from the outside - this attack comes from the inside of your network. (Most routers now ship with external admin access turned off, although you can turn it on if you need to get to your router remotely . . . but again, make sure you set a STRONG admin password if you turn that option on for any reason.)
A new exploit uses JavaScript and can access the routers settings from inside your network when you allow that script to run on your computer. The malicious code can be embedded within Javascript that you might want to trust, like - for example - a game applet. Simply surfing a compromised site and allowing Java to run in your browser is enough to get hacked. It may not trigger your browsers security settings, as it never attempts to access or change local files on your computer.
In the background, out of your sight, the script looks up your networks internal gateway address. It then attempts to logon to your routers admin panel using that IP. It can guess the password from one of about five typical login combinations that are widely used by almost all home router manufacturers as their factory setting. It takes advantage of the fact that many owners never change that password.
Once it has control, it changes the DNS settings on your router to point at a hackers "poisoned" DNS server. The idea is that when you browse to your bank (for example) using the correct URL or bookmark, the router looks at the compromised DNS server and sends you off to a phishing site that could look exactly like your banks login site. From there they capture your user ID, password, and of course your bank account.
Simply logging into your routers panel and changing the Admin password to your own unique password will stop this attack.
1) Open your network settings, and look at the Status of your LAN connection. In Windows click on the Support tab. (Not sure how to get this on a Mac, anyone that knows feel free to chime in.) You should see a gateway IP address listed.
2) Enter that IP address into the URL field in any web browser. That's the address for your routers administration panel.
3) You will see a request to login. Try these combinations (or refer to your routers owners manual):
User: (blank)
Password: password
User: (blank)
Password: admin
User: (blank)
Password: (blank)
User: admin
Password: password
User: admin
Password: admin
Once you log in successfully, you will see your routers control panel.
4) Refer to your owners manual, or surf the control panel (usually under Setup, or Password, or Administrative Settings) for the Administrators Password reset. Enter in the old password (factory default) in the first field, and your new password twice in the second and third fields, then save or apply your settings.
5) Close your browser, and re-open it to the same gateway IP address, and test the login with your new password. Do NOT check any box that offers the option to remember your password.
Voila, you will not be vulnerable to this particular attack.

Choosing Between Windows & Linux for Workstation & Servers: Rationale & Experience

Traditionally companies choose Windows as their desktop environment and often for their intranet servers too. Windows is generally perceived as being easier to use and administer and mostly with good reason. Linux learning question

Hi!
I have over 9 years of Microsoft operating system experience and I want to expand! I have NO experience with Linux and from what I've seen so far it's a pineapple to Microsoft's apple (pardon the pun). Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might approach learning Linux? Any good n00b suggestions? I know I can learn it, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask!

MySql error
Date: 02/24/07
(PHP Community) Keywords: mysql, sql, linux
I'm getting an puzzling error in a mysql query. The thing is that locally, on my Windows NT server, it works, but when I install the program on my host, which runs Linux, it says me the query is wrong.
The error message I'm getting is : "You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '(SELECT ncis_series_cats.series_id FROM ncis_series_cats WHERE"
And my query is:
SELECT ncis_chapters.story_id, ncis_stories.series_id, ncis_series.user_id, ncis_series.series_title, ncis_series.series_rating, ncis_series.series_summary, ncis_series.series_notes, DATE_FORMAT(ncis_series.series_date, '%d/%m/%Y') AS date_f, ncis_series.series_complete, ncis_users.name FROM ncis_chapters LEFT JOIN ncis_stories ON ncis_chapters.story_id = ncis_stories.id LEFT JOIN ncis_series ON ncis_series.id=ncis_stories.series_id LEFT JOIN ncis_users ON ncis_users.id=ncis_series.user_id WHERE ncis_stories.series_id = ANY (SELECT ncis_series_cats.series_id FROM ncis_series_cats WHERE ncis_series_cats.cat_id = '00012') ORDER BY ncis_chapters.date DESC LIMIT 10
I can't understand why it works under NT and it doesn't works under Linux. Does anyone have an idea? Many thanks in advance.
ETA: My host is running MySql 4.0.27, while I'm running 5.0.22.

News Pictures
Date: 03/01/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: web, linux
Hello All,
Does anyone have a static source for news type pictures? I am creating a personal screensaver that goes out and gets news type of pictures and updates a directory. These pictures will be displayed as my screensaver.
Right now I have lots of neat weather data from the NOAA website. Radar, IR, and general satellite pics for my area and nationally. All of these images have a static location. For instance: http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/national_forecast.jpg always has a national forecast image.
I'm looking for something like this, but not necessarily weather.
BTW, I use Linux, so I don't need a Windows program to do this (if it matters.)
Thanks in advanced
