Linux
Date: 12/31/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux
Could some of you tell me which Linux distribution you're using and explain why you're using it instead of the other ones. Also, if you've switched distributions in the past, please also make some comparisons.
I'm thinking of Kubuntu, since I've used KDE at work before and Ubuntu is good for relative freshies.

Ready to throw in the towel
Date: 01/02/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux, google
I can't believe the number of hoops I have to jump through in order to even get an internet connection working on a Kubuntu distribution. Right now I don't have it working even though I've been working on a solution all day
It looks like I'm hardly the only one having problems with this- FAR from it
http://www.google.com/search?q=marvell+gigabit+lan+ubuntu&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
...and this is not even counting getting the graphics card to work right. That's for later!
I don't have any more excess energy to deal with this crap today... I'm just going to install Vista 64-bit RC2 in another partition and be done with it
This is the reason why so many people aren't on Linux yet. At least LAST time I had an internet connection when trying Ubuntu on my older notebook. This is utterly ridiculous. Worst comes to worst I'll just format the partition Kubuntu is installed on into NTFS again and call it a day.

How To: ICMP Ping in Java (JDK 1.5 and above)
Date: 01/06/07
(Java Web) Keywords: java, linux
Programatically using ICMP Ping is a great way to establish that a server is up and running. Previously you couldn’t do ICMP ping (what ping command does in Linux/Unix & Windows) in java without using JNI or exec calls. Here is a simple and reliable method to do ICMP pings in Java without using JNI [...]

Network & System Monitoring
Date: 01/11/07
(IT Professionals) Keywords: software, linux
What's your favorite Network and System monitoring Software/Solution?
We're looking for something that will log snmp information from Network Devices, Provide an 'overview' of system and network status, and maybe even log the 'logs' from servers. Something that can help our small IT department track and manage around 20+ servers in 7 remote office locations, and give us a 'window' into not only problems and alerts that need to be brought to our attention, but also an overview of performance (basically SNMP data from switches and routers, aggregated over time).
Something open source would be nice, but if it's good, we'd be willing to spend some money--but not anything as costly as the huge enterprise-class solutions from IBM or HP...
We're mostly a Windows Server shop, but we have some CentOS and RedHat servers as well. I'd like to see something linux based, but would be willing to put something on Windows if it's better. If you have a linux-based solution, what OSs would you recommend? As I said we have some CentOS boxes now, but aren't sure whats 'cool' or recommended for servers these days.

Seeking open source (or at least, freely available) project management software
Date: 01/15/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: mysql, software, database, sql, web, linux, microsoft
I'm trying to find something that will do approximately what Microsoft Project does, without actually being Microsoft Project ... Things I'd be looking for (ordered approximately from most important, to least important...):
- Can track project schedules and resource allocation
- Open Source (or at least, freely available)
- Self-contained standalone application (e.g., not web based, does not require any additional software such as MySQL or some other database back-end to be installed in order to function)
- Runs on both Windows and Linux
- Ability to work with (at least read) MS Project ".mpp" files nice, not strictly necessary
I found "Windows Planner" (a Windows port of GNOME Planner) on Sourceforge. Unfortunately, while it does install on my WinXP SP2 system, it does not run - attempting to start it results in a DLL error. There are some other things on Sourceforge that look very nice, but they all seem to either be web-based, or require a database back-end, and that won't work for what I'm doing at the moment.
Any recommendations?

UK webhosting recs / DreamHost
Date: 01/16/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web, linux, hosting, apache
1) Can anyone recommend any reliable and not too expensive UK based webhosting companies?
(only hosting, no domain name registration needed)
Necessary features:
- Linux/Apache server
- at least 150MB webspace
- bandwith/traffic on a normal scale, the more the better *g*
- PHP (version 4 okay, 5 better)
- at least one MySQL database
- FTP access and several email accounts should be a given
A plus, but not really neccessary:
- .htaccess
- cgi/perl
- shell access
2) DreamHost as a webhost for a small business website?
I do have a DreamHost account, mostly for dabbling around and trying out stuff, and love all their features (and low prices). But although I've never had any problems so far, hearing every now and then about down times or bad customer service makes me a bit reluctant to recommend them to a client for hosting their small business website. Opinions, anyone?
Thanks! :-)

linux distro questions!
Date: 01/18/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux
hello fellow geeks. i've been venturing into linux lately and messing with several distros, i seem to like mandriva the best. i like it because it has this clean looking but snazzy GUI and lots of awesome effects like the jelly effects when you move the windows around (they seem to move like jello/flubber/what have you ;)) and the neat cube effect of moving between the virtual desks. my question to you all is, if this is what impresses me and what i think is neat are there other distros out there that i should take a gander at? especially livecd ones.
thanks oh so much.

Linux Foundation cynics ask merger or takeover?
Date: 01/22/07

Is this simply a matter of consolidating the legal and engineering resources of Linux, or is this a way for big vendors to take command of the open source movement with "one throat to choke," in this case Jim Zemlin, who had been running the FSG?

Linux Foundation to be more like Apache
