1. No politics please, we’re Linux!

Date: 06/19/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: linux

What the Linux Foundation should have given was a statement emphasizing value, cooperation among vendors, and a promise to make Linux desktops run as well as Windows. Thematic offense in place of programmatic defense.

  3. oh crap. hard drive..

Date: 06/21/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: linux

Ok, so I'm in XP minding my business. Then boom, I get the nice BSOD. So I reboot, it gets into windows, same thing. I track it to my printer. Unplug it and it's fine. I decide to deal with it later. Then I reboot it into Linux to do some work. I want to go back to Windows so I reboot it again, but this time GRUB freaks out and gives me error 17, unrecognised filetype. I got a live cd for Ubuntu and tried to load it up but that didn't work either. It worked the first time but then all of a sudden I couldn't do anything so I went to restart and now it won't even go into the live cd. it keeps giving me these strange messages; "I/o eror on drive dm-3, logical block 0" and then counts up to 15 or 16 and then starts back at 0 and does this over and over.

The next step was to load up Gnome partition editor and have a look, and two of my partitions (the ntfs one for Windows and the ext3 one) are bad. Gparted suggests that if I am in Windows, to try to run chkdsk.

I am at a total loss here. I tried the recovery cd that came with the computer and it didn't work. I really, really don't want to have to resort to reformatting it either. My question is can anyone recommend somewhere to get chkdsk on a live cd (if that's even possible..) or even just what I should try next? I've been looking for ideas and somewhere to get something else I can burn to a live cd with my wife's computer that would help, but so far nothing.

    Thanks.

  4. GD Question

    Howdy,

I'm trying to install GD, I run Debian Linux on my web server. I keep reading that it comes pre installed with PHP 4.3+, but for some reason I'm not finding it already installed on my system.

How do I find out if I already have it (I could have sworn that I had already installed it about a year ago, but just did loads of updates recently), make it work, or install it and then make it work?

Here's my phpinfo() if that helps.

    Thanks!

  8. Thunderbird's junk mail filtering, and cookies in FF

Date: 06/30/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web, linux, spam

I recently switched from XP to Ubuntu Linux, and with it switched from IE7 and Windows Live Mail Desktop to Firefox and Thunderbird. Firefox is fine, but I am not exactly impressed with Thunderbird so far.

My main email accounts are a pop3 one and a Hotmail account, so I downloaded the Webmail extension for Thunderbird, and it appears to be working fine, even if actually getting the right version of Thunderbird for it was a complete pain in the neck. (To explain, Webmail uses TB version 2, and Ubuntu's repositories only had 1.5.12. If you download the new version from Mozilla, it doesn't overwrite the older version despite what Mozilla says - it will run alongside it, ignoring all of your settings and refusing to import mail, so I had to do that manually.) My biggest problem with it at the moment is the way it deals with spam emails. I've been training it by giving it plenty of junk daily for the last three or so weeks, but it's only catching perhaps 60% of it, and at the same time is catching some legitimate emails. These aren't clever spams it's missing; the one I just marked as spam and moved was entitled "Would you like to show your partner/s your sexual strength and power?". Additionally, when it does catch it, if it's sent to my pop3 account it doesn't move it to the Junk folder like it's set up to. It moves junk from Hotmail easily, though.

Is there any way I can make it better, short of writing message filters myself to move things to Junk automatically? On Windows, WLM caught about 95% of spam and didn't keep putting real emails in Junk, and given how much praise there is for Thunderbird's spam filters I didn't expect them to be this unreliable. I've also found that I can't reply to Livejournal comments via Thunderbird, but seem to remember this was already a problem ages ago when I tried using Thunderbird for Windows, so I assume there isn't a workaround?

Firefox has been a much easier switch, but there are two features I'm missing from IE7. Is there any way to do the following?
    - set it up to prompt you on a per-domain basis to accept/reject cookies - it seems as if I can't do it from a dialog when I visit new sites like I did with IE, and have to produce a list of either blocked or allowed sites manually. Or, can I import IE's list of domains to reject cookies from? I don't want to have to keep clearing cookies manually.
    - make new tabs open my homepage by default rather than a blank page.

Thanks for any help you can give me :)

I have a production machine running 'Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 ', never mind that I am pretty certain Red hat has moved onto a generation release of 4-5, I need to install php5 onto this machine without threatening the php4 installation already in place. From past experience, I know php isn't that simple to compile (ex. ./configure && make && make install ) so I was wondering if anyone knows of a howto to walk me through the configure/compilation part and explicity make sure php5 doesn't touch the working php4.

  18. Export Windows XP's registry without running Windows XP?

Date: 08/06/07 (Software)    Keywords: software, linux

While running Linux on the same machine where Windows XP (Pro, with SP1) is installed, or while running Win9x on another machine that has read access to XP's registry files, is there software I could use to export the registry to a .reg file?

The NTFS partition is mounted read-only, and I don't need or want write access to it. I just have a bunch of Win32 software installers that can't run on Wine, but the software itself is said to run fine on Wine if a working installation on Windows is just copied over along with everything it needs from the registry.

I know that I could run REGEDIT on XP to export it easily, but rebooting that particular machine this week would be inconvenient.

REGEDIT does run on Wine, but the Load Hive option in the File menu is grayed out. I don't know whether that's because Windows has to be running to make that option available, or whether I might need only to copy the right files from XP over to Wine's fake C: drive to make it work.

Two other machines on the local network have Windows installed, but the versions are 95C and 98SE. On either of those two, REGEDIT seems to expect the computer's name to be enough information to let the data be made human-readable, so I assume it would need (at the very least) for Windows to be running on the same Linux system that I don't want to shut down.

Installing XP on an emulator on Linux right now is out of the question for various reasons.

So, I'm hoping (in vain?) that some free and legal software exists that understands XP's registry files well enough to convert them to .reg format. So far, everything I've found requires that an NT-based Windows version be up and running to do the actual conversion. Any ideas?
