One year after Red Hat acquired JBoss, the battle is finally beginning to heat up in the open source middleware space. In what was described as a “coming out party” for JBoss post merger, Red Hat and Dell disclosed at LinuxWorld 2007 plans to prebundle three middleware stacks on Dell’s PowerEdge Servers. “Partnering with Dell allows us to be much bolder in the middleware space,” [...]

Date: 08/08/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, html, linux

Ok there are way to many ways to do this and I am getting behind schedule so here we go:
-There is a lovely form (as it stands now in HTML); I want people to enter in data and then when they press submit a PDF is generated on the box and saved for later review by the client.
The end form is going to run on a Linux box with PHP that has limited access (think little to no console access).

Fpdf looked like the best choice but I do not want to build the PDF file if need be ( I can make it now via Acrobat Pro). That and I have found 0 examples (I live by them) that incorporates (and works!) HTML form work, $POST and FPDF.

In Acrobat Pro I can make a form, put a submit button and then give it an action; then it can magically export the data as FDF, HTML, XFDF or PDF. Horrible shame that there is no documentation to show how to catch it on the server side (email links assume the user has a email client on their machine).

At this point I just want this over and done; any hints or help?

Date: 08/10/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, virus, web, linux, yahoo

I am a Linux man. I am familiar with most Linux's. I enjoy Linux and understand the filesystem layout etc.
Unfortunetly geing the Junior tech I sometimes have to be the computer whooping boy. So, when a Windows luser decides to install the latest virus on his laptop, I have to figure it out.
Unfortunetly I've been out of the Windows world for so long, I am challenged by this latest problem.
The CD rom is busted (firmware I think). It's a laptop, so no disk access. And now recently the web browser won't work. When I say won't work, I mean that the system pings www.yahoo.com, but the web browser (ie and FF) say that Unable to Connect.
Windows Firewall is on, off, it doesn't matter.
    This is XP with sp2.
Oh btw, NOD32 said it does/did have a virus but I can't pull it up again.

So my question is, what is causing the browser to not be able to pull up pages.

    Any help is appreciated. thx

  18. Tar? For Windows?

Date: 08/29/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: linux

Is there a common utility for Windows that allows someone to set the blocksize of a drive and format that scsi tape in a particular blocksize? For instance, in Linux I would use:

    mt -f /dev/st0 setblk 1024

To set the blocksize of the drive to 1024.

    tar -cvf /dev/st0 /etc/hosts -b 2

This would write a file to the tape in the drive and force a 1024 blocksize.

Is there something similar in Windows that does this. Like a command in ntbackup? I'm looking for a solution that would be common to all Windows systems.

    Thanks in advance

  19. Server Woes

Date: 08/30/07 (Software)    Keywords: web, linux, spam

    Greetings and Salutations!
    I have an interesting issue.

I am running a mail / domain controller on SELinux.
There is a webmin interface installed.
    There is webmail.
The mail service is a variation of sendmail called SquirrelMail.
The mail server is also running ClamAV and SpamAssassin.

Tuesday a problem appeared around 11AM where the outbound mail service just stalls.
I starting looking at the queue and I noticed an inordinate amount of replies to bad addresses from the Mailer Daemon that are timing out. On peeking in on them I discovered that they are bouncebacks on emails sent to bad addresses here and that they are spam (no surprise there). Many of these messages are stalling in the queue and I suspected that this was the problem. Clearing the queue did not fix the issue, but restarting sendmail did and still does make the outbound process work.

So, last night, I updated ClamAV (no update needed), sendmail (update completed) and SA (update completed).
I hoped that the problem would go away but it did not. In fact, it is now worse. The frequency that I must manually restart the sendmail service has gone up.

In an effort to provide less overall interruption to my users I created a cron task to do this for me.
    Here is the script:
    #/bin/bash
    #this is to restart sendmail
    date >>/etc/mailcron.log
    service sendmail stop>>/etc/mailcron.log
    service sendmail start>>/etc/mailcron.log
    echo "mailtab1 process done
    ">>/etc/mailcron.log

Now, here is the interesting part.
The cron is set to run every 10 minutes (minutes ending in 3)
    It runs.
The output put into the log file when it runs automatically is incomplete:
    Thu Aug 30 11:23:01 EDT 2007
    mailtab1 process done

So, obviously the script it running, but it is only time-stamping and informing me that it is done.

The more interesting part is that when I run the task manually it works:
    Thu Aug 30 11:25:19 EDT 2007
    Shutting down sm-client: [ OK ]
Shutting down sendmail: [ OK ]
    Starting sendmail: [ OK ]
    Starting sm-client: [ OK ]
    mailtab1 process done

    WHY?

I need a solution to one (or, preferably, both) of these problems. I also have a second script that does the mailreload command.

My current plan, based on some of the mail server logs showing errors with the ClamAV milter, is to uninstall and reinstall clamav tonight afterhours. Thoughts?
