  4. So how does this effect us?

Date: 09/30/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: html, web, microsoft

Two years ago a jury awarded little Eolas $500,000,000 in damages for patent infringement by Microsoft. Microsoft danced the usual dance, first appealing to a higher court and then exhorting web-standards organization W3C to join them in asking the US patent office for a reconsideration of Eolas patent.Yesterday, the patent office ruled the patent valid. Microsoft is at the end of their games. Now, they have to pay Eolas and alter IE to avoid the Eolas patent.

So, why is the 'duck posting this to the Mozilla community?

Well, let's just say that the patent is fairly wide-ranging. Eolas' patent covers technologies such as ActiveX, but equally covers Mozilla plug-ins, the HTML Embed and Object tags, embedded object pop-up controls, and XBL (Mozilla's binding language). Microsoft has a half-billion to pay-up, what does the Mozilla Foundation have? For sure not enough money!

Maybe Eolas will license the Mozilla Foundation the patent in some way shape or form? If they do not; might not that effect Mozilla's third licensing option: the GPL, thereby preventing any further distribution of Firefox? could the patent possibly be expanded to include Firefox Extensions, one of our few advantages over IE?

I'm not thinking on the possible troubles too much. Until something bad happens, nothing real has happened and for all I know the owner of Eolas is a firefox user and wouldn't dream of hurting us... stranger things have happened.

  9. More Support for Mozilla Firefox at eBay

Date: 10/04/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, microsoft, ebay

Many e-Bay sellers are expressing their frustration at e-Bay's lopsided web design in favor of MS Internet Explorer. According to yesterday's mozillaZine post; AuctionBytes.com , an on-line news site, is reporting that some eBay sellers have started a petition to persuade the auction heavyweight to support Mozilla Firefox and other alternative browsers. According to the article, some features on the eBay Sell Your Item page are optimised for Microsoft Internet Explorer and do not work correctly in Firefox and other browsers. Furthermore, there is no Firefox version of eBay Toolbar, which is currently only available for Internet Explorer on Windows.

The petition, entitled eBay to provide alternative browser support, was created by Jared McAteer and has 1,189 signatures at the time of writing. Signers are required to provide a name and email address.

"It should be noted that sellers can use Firefox to auction items on eBay but the experience is not as smooth and refined as it is with Internet Explorer. Not all of the site is Mozilla-hostile: in May, eBay improved its Picture Manager tool to add support for Firefox. In addition, eBay is one of the default search engines in the Firefox Search Bar, which we presume raises revenue for the Mozilla Foundation."

If you feel e-Bay has a faulty business policy, kindly click here to sign a petition requesting e-Bay to provide further support to other web browsers besides IE.

  15. A step in the right direction?

Date: 10/09/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, spam, microsoft

Firstly, I just want this to be known that this isn't an anti-windows rant or anything. There is a question being posed here, I promise :P

With that said, companies like McAfee and Symantec have basically been making a living solely from Microsoft's security oversights. They've been charging people to use their software which protects those people from the vulnerabilities that Microsoft left open. The quality of these programs varies from function to function. Even then, they ignore adware since it's not considered 'malicous'. And even still, they have issues with using the same name for similar viruses. Users are faced with these same problems with any anti-virus/anti-adware/anti-whatever software they use. There is a lot of similar companies, but they don't have a common agreeance on what is and isn't a virus, or if they should detect adware. There's also the issues that come with the firewall program they install. Traffic from the internet isn't always malicious, but those firewalls can't usually tell the difference. Very few of these programs are free. None of these problems actually FIX the problem. They're only removing programs that exploit the initial vulnerabilities, leaving room for reuse value.

As many of you surely know already, Microsoft has recently released a beta version of their anti-crap (to summarize anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-spyware, etc) scanner and removal tool. Before that, they've included a firewall program in XP SP2. Microsoft is not charging anything for either of these programs. At least not as of yet if they ever decide to.

So, my question is this; Do you folks think Microsoft is taking a step in the right direction by adding the firewall and scanner tools? Will they do a better job than the other Antivirus vendors? Do you think maybe they are taking a step in the WRONG direction, like, why aren't they fixing the actual problems instead of covering them up? What do you all think?

  16. MSN Video/Video conferencing through a firewall without upnp support

Date: 10/10/05 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: security, microsoft

    Hi,

As you may know, MSN requires upnp for video chat/voice chat to happen, I'm currently using borderware, almost all (heck, maybe all) eal4+ certified firewalls do not support upnp because its a security loophole.

however, the alternative being to open the entire udp 5004-65535 range according to microsoft's documentation...

    does anyone have any suggestions?

either an alternative video conferencing tool or a solution to the firewall problem?
