Now, I KNOW the answer is staring me in the face, but I just can't put my finger on it. SOMEBODY HELP!

  • Bizarre Windows XP Home mess

Date: 10/22/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: linux, microsoft

x-posted to my own journal, and another Windows community. If you guys have *any* idea what may have caused this, just so I can let my wife know and have a better idea myself... it would be appreciated. I'm primarily a Linux OS guy, and often going beyond basics and advanced stuff in Windows is a bit beyond me. Even one of my MS engineer friends was a bit stumped as to *what* caused this.

    ###

How's this for insane? We had decided that my 512 RAM chip (same models, everything across the board as my wife's box, which always had worked, responded, even sounded flawless) should go to her to give her a full gig of RAM. The machine boots, but with no video, at all. Odd. Try swapping back the old 256 chip instead (the old PCs have only two slots on the board). Video, but... Windows failed to load because it can't find:

    c:\windows\system32\config\system

Huh? WTF? We have no Windows media (or much anything right now) due to being technically in-move from one location to another so after getting blank CDs at Target, we get a Recovery Disk burned from an .iso found online. Sure enough, I can get in. But... her user is gone. The computer name is gone. Profiles, gone, and the entire system appears defaulted back to the OEM Windows installation. The main logon is passwordless and named "Owner" now, rather than my wife's name. The PC name is reset. All network settings, and all her personal data all still there in the folders for the user profile, however.

Gets better: the machine is "wobbly" now, in the words of our Microsoft engineer friend, who was utterly dumbfounded by what happened as I talked to him about it and worked on the system. Two vaguely plausible long shots: power surge as I powered down or up to install the new RAM, or "shite bad luck". He's very British. Any and all response to... anything on the system is very clippy and choppy now, regardless of what RAM is installed. Wife is in the process of backing up all her data to CD right now (1/2 way done so far).

Sunday I'm reinstalling Windows clean on her machine most likely.

  • VS.Net 2003 + VS 2005 = Compatibility Nightmare?

Date: 10/26/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: microsoft

With VS 2005 coming out and the .Net 2.0 framework coming with it, I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not I'll be able to have VS 2003/1.1 and VS 2005/2.0 running on the same machine and not have to worry about compilation/compatibility issues. Basically I work at a MS shop that runs 1.1 framework stuff, and I wanted to do some experimenting/conversions to 2.0, but I don't want to if the multiple frameworks will cause problems with the IDEs and compiling. Has Microsoft commented on this or is it the "better to be safe (only 1 framework) than sorry" approach? Thanks.

  • textwrangler

Date: 11/01/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web, microsoft

Does anyone here use Textwrangler for making websites? Is there a way to download one for a PC (because I think this program is for Mac)? I am trying to finish an assignment at home, but I don't have Textwrangler. All I need are the tags which Textwrangler gives you when you create a new document. These tags are html beginning and end tags, head tags, as well as meta and something else, I think. I need these tags for my website to be validated by http://validator.w3.org

Whenever I try to use Notepad or Microsoft Frontpage to make a website, it never validates. There is always something wrong with the meta tags or encoding tags--things like that.

    5. Energy Blue/Royale Theme Pack for Windows XP

Date: 10/20/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: microsoft

I hadn't seen this mentioned here, but just a while back Microsoft released a theme included in Windows Media Centre Edition 2005 called "Energy Blue" to Tablet PC users. At the same time they left us Windows XP users in the dark. [This] Package will install the theme onto a normal Windows XP Home/Professional PC. Alternately, you can download the official release from Microsoft New Zealand, but I like the package from Download.com much better.

By the way, are there any other theme packs out there, either officially released by Microsoft or elsewhere, that will change the visual style of my Windows XP without having to download a theme program to make them run? Thank you.

    6. Computer Woes Go On...

Date: 10/20/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: microsoft

Hello, you may remember me last week asking about my computer. Well, I took it back to the shop when it stopped working all together and they install a new CPU chip for me because the other one had burnt out.

Unfortunately I'm still having problems, The Sims 2 still isn't working, it either gives me the warning 'This program has crashed' or the computer restarts and I get a Windows message about how I have a serious problem. As far as I can tell the problem has to do with a driver, but it won't say which one, I opened Device Manager and updated all the drivers that I could, but it still won't work.

Also, more worryingly, my USB ports are no longer working. They were before, but now the computer won't pick them up, so I can't use my optical mouse or my memory sticks. I've tried to update the BIOS and various other things suggested by Computer Help Boards on the net, but nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem? I don't whether to take the computer back to the shop because they really seem to have crapped it up, I've also injured my ankle and can't get down there myself. Do you think though I should take it back, complain and threaten to call the Department of Fair Trading? Especially since the computer was working fine before I took it there.

Any help is appreciated, thanks :O)
