  2. Restore Database via Script?

Date: 08/31/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, sql, microsoft

I use Microsoft SQL Server 2000, for use with Microsoft Great Plains. Right now, I am working on building a backup server, incase the main server goes down (which has happened 2 times in the past 6 months).

My question is, is there a way to restore a database using a script that could be run from a Windows Command Box (cmd.exe)?

If you need more information, just let me know.

    Thank you very much,

    Peace,
    Kevin

  4. ugh, big Windows XP problem

Date: 09/02/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, microsoft

For the past couple days, my computer had been freezing 1-5 minutes after Windows started. I went to Microsoft's homepage and they suggested a clean boot, which i performed, and still it froze after about a minute. I decided to try starting it in safe mode to determine if it was a problem with Windows at all or a problem with the computer itself (which is a junk E-machines PC from 2002.). Like the Microsoft homepage suggested, I changed the setting in Run> MSCONFIG so it would start automatically in safe mode, rather than booting in safe mode with F8. Now the computer is stuck on a loop of trying to start, not being able to and restarting.

The screen says this: Sorry for the inconveience, but Windows did not start sucessfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.) I have no idea what to do. If anyone has any ideas at all, please help. Then, there's a menu for several different safe modes, the last good configuration, and start Windows normally. none of these load all the way to windows and the computer will restart and return to this screen.

If there's nothing that can be done aside from wiping the whole thing clean and reinstalling Windows, is there any way i can get my files/programs off the hard drive first? or are they lost forever?

    (my background)
Using MySQL and PostgreSQL on FreeBSD and Linux machines
    (the problem)
I have four databases (actually MDF and LDF files) from a client. They want to know if they can extract data from the four databases by year and place them in to individual databases. This sounds ok, but I am new to Microsoft's SQL server. I sacrificed one of my personal dev machines and installed 2k3 Enterprise and 2000 SQL server. Created new databases with the same name as the files and then replaced the new files with the original ones from the client. Super.
    Now what?

Again my background is in the command line/web front end so I am running a little blind. What is the simplest way to see the data in each database? What are some _quality_ sites I can read (because googling information you have no idea about takes time to filter out the bs).

  8. Corrupt WinXPHome Mup.sys

Date: 09/08/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: linux, microsoft

I installed Ubuntu (Hoary Hedgehog) Linux on my Dell Dimension 4600. It originally came with WinXPHome. I made it dual-boot. Grub was installed to the master boot record to make Ubuntu work. I didn't like that it defaulted to Ubuntu. Later, I developed a dislike for Ubuntu because it didn't feel enough like Windows for me and I was much faster in Windows.

So... I decided that I wanted to remove Grub and restore the Windows boot record. Someone in '[info]'ubuntu_users said to fdisk /mbr to fix it.

I tried that. It said that it successfully did it. The drive is bootable to CD. The drive is also bootable to floppy. The drive is bootable to itself, but WinXPHome has a corrupt file and dies in the initialization process.

I have a WinXPPro laptop available to me. But no cables to be able to hook it up.

I have a WinME desktop available to me. But it cannot see the NTFS partition.

I have an iBook that I'm using to type this post. But that won't help.

There are files on the NTFS partition that I might want. But I cannot view them.

I've tried using the Recovery program on both an XPPro disc that I have, as well as the XPHome disc that came with the Dell. I am able to log into the program. I can view files in the root and files in the Windows directory. I can copy files in either of those directories over to a secondary hard drive hooked up to the machine. I cannot however cd into any other directories. It says that access is denied.

There is more whining about this matter in my journal if you are so inclined.

So... ideas? I play on my computer all day. It keeps me sane. I need to find a job, but that is proving to be difficult.

    Thanks for your time.

Edit: Oh. I think I also fried the Dell's power supply. x.X

WinXPHome is repaired. Tried activating, didn't work, called MS automated number, didn't work, called MS person, didn't work, solution is to call Dell and have them give me either a new number or a new disc. I hate Microsoft. A lot.

  9. Windows driver verifier tool

Date: 09/12/05 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: asp, microsoft

interesting tool for you power geeks out there:

Power User: Licensed to Drive Windows?

Microsoft has provided a management tool known as the Driver Verifier Manager. Unfortunately, they didn’t really tell anyone about it.

To see what I’m talking about, you should first save all open files and close all open programs because the Verifier can, by design, trigger the infamous Blue Screen of Death.

Now select Start, Run [or use the Windows Key-R shortcut], then type Verifier and press Enter. You should see a dialog box offering you the chance to either view current driver settings or create your own.
    (more in article)

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;244617
    SUMMARY
Driver Verifier is included in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 to promote stability and reliability; you can use this tool to troubleshoot driver issues. Windows kernel-mode components can cause system corruption or system failures as a result of an improperly written driver, such as an earlier version of a Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver. This article describes how to use Driver Verifier to isolate and troubleshoot a driver in the system.

  13. UPDATING views table joins

Date: 09/14/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: asp, sql, microsoft

Alright... imagine this scenario. Server 1 has two tables. Server 2 has views to server 1's two tables.

From Server 2, you're attempting to execute an UPDATE on said views. (No, you cannot simply update server1 and the two tables directly, that's not an option so don't ask.) If you run a single UPDATE with a WHERE clause against view 1, it'll work fine.

BUT if you add in an INNER JOIN constraint against view 2, instead of updating just the handful of records you wish to UPDATE , it'll UPDATE EVERYTHING!!!!

    Example:

    -- Server1
    CREATE TABLE tempOne (
    rowid int IDENTITY(1, 1),
    myvalue int
    )

    CREATE TABLE tempTwo (
    rowid int
    )

    -- Server2
CREATE VIEW viewOne AS (SELECT * FROM server1...tempOne)

CREATE VIEW viewTwo AS (SELECT * FROM server1...tempTwo)

-- Insert 5 random values into tempOne then insert '2' and '4' into tempTwo, which will later be used as a constraint

    -- Server2
-- This works just fine, should return rowid 2 and 4 of viewOne.
    SELECT *
    FROM viewOne t1
    INNER JOIN viewTwo t2
    ON t1.rowid = t2.rowid

-- This is what does NOT work
    UPDATE viewOne
    SET myvalue = myvalue * -1
    FROM viewOne t1
    INNER JOIN viewTwo t2
    ON t1.rowid = t2.rowid

Instead of rowid 2 and 4 being UPDATED, ALL 5 rows will be UDPATED. What GIVES?!?! I see via SQL Profiler that the query is sent from Server2 to Server1 and redefined there in a really messed up fashion. Am still trying to wrap my head around how I can rewrite this query. And no, I cannot not use the views and directly jump to Server1 because in my real scenario, it could be ServerX... I don't know until runtime, hence why we have the generic views.

    Help?

    --

UPDATE: Alright, I've done some more digging and figured a few things out.

First, this has NOTHING to do with views. The problem has to do with remote server UPDATE statements. I ran some more tests without views but with direct table references as a WHAT IF, and ran into the same results. But when I'd tweak the UPDATE statement slightly, I managed to generate a SQL Server error which I did a lookup on and found the following:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814581

Basically the table I'm updating in question, doesn't have any PKs or UNIQUE constraints on it. My basic example, that would be easy to toss in. However the actual Production table I'm dealing with does NOT have any PKs, nor can I enforce any (don't ask, makes me want to sob). In other words, I'm basically screwed.

    *sigh*

  14. Firefox is Back on the Rise

Date: 09/15/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, microsoft

After a slight South turn in July, Firefox is bouncing back in August. According to an article written by Judy Westcott in Spymac.com, Firefox is back on the rise; jumping up a quarter point in August 2005, while Netscape and Safari also enjoyed a modest bump in overall usage. Judy Westcott based her article on statistics released today by NetApplications.

In August 2005, Microsoft's Internet Explorer continued its slow, yet steady decline in browser usage market share. IE enjoyed 92.31% market share in October of 2004, but is currently at 86.31%. Firefox attempted to regain its momentum with a modest increase in share from the previous month, and Safari maintained its slow, yet steady gains, improving to 2.20%. Meanwhile, Netscape abruptly stopped its steady market share loss and posted the biggest share gain during August, up from 1.50% to 2.02%.

    August Browser/Market Share:

    Microsoft Internet Explorer: 86.31%
    Firefox: 8.27%
    Safari: 2.20%
    Netscape: 2.02%
    Opera: 0.62%
    Mozilla: 0.51%
    Other: 0.07%

    Regards,

    Omar.-

Firefox isn't the only interesting story in August, with Safari and Netscape on the rise, Internet Explorer faced an offensive on three separate fronts.

Firefox isn't the only interesting story in August, with Safari and Netscape on the rise, Internet Explorer faced an offensive on three separate fronts, noted Phil Vizzaccaro, CEO of NetApplications. While Firefox rebounded after its small decline in July and Safari enjoyed a modest tenth of a percent gain, August was Netscape's month to shine earning just over a half percent. The Mozilla Foundation also recently announced the availability of its new Firefox 1.5 Beta.

  15. Praises and Faults of Firefox From a MS Exec's Mind

Date: 09/15/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, microsoft

Mr. Scott used to work at Microsoft Corporation and was responsible for designing much of what is now Internet Explorer. Being at Microsoft from 1994 to 2003, he held several job titles such as: usability engineer, program manager, lead program manager, and training manager. He also worked as a lead program manager on Microsoft Windows and MSN. After using Firefox, Scott decided to abandon IE's camp and now only surfs the web with the blazing fox. In a fascinating blog, he expresses the reasons behind his decision to switch browsers. Based on his experience and expertise, he cleverly points out the pros and cons of Firefox compared to IE. I agree with some of them, others I totally disagree This is his exciting story written in Berkun Blog under the title, "Why I Switched to Firefox".

My host recently changed a whole bunch of settings and now this page, every page within it, and a lot of other pages don't recognize tables within Internet Explorer or something.. That's the closest thing I can guess! This DID at one point work, though I don't know specifically when it stopped working as I don't use IE.. Personally I think Microsoft should scrap the whole project, it was a failure from the start.. BUY THEM OUT MOZILLA! =/

Could anyone be so kind as to look at my source and give a suggestion or two?

    Thanks in advance,
    ~Ego
