Upgrade Woes
Date: 11/07/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: microsoft
Okay, so you'll recall that I asked about video cards earlier today. As it turns out, I chose to upgrade the motherboard to a PCI Express model and get a 6800 GT. I looked at the 7x00 series, but really didn't see the need for the higher power (or SLI) for what I do and want. So I'm happy.
So I took out the old motherboard, put in the new one, moved my RAM and CPU over, put in the new video card, plugged everything back in, and wonder of all wonders, it booted up just fine! Checking my drivers in the hardware manager showed lots of unknown devices, as expected. I installed system drivers and video drivers, and again, everything went perfectly.
Except the keyboard.
I have a Microsoft wireless desktop elite (Model 1011). The OS insists that it's a standard 101/102 keyboard and says it can't start it. I uninstall that driver, install the appropriate one (Intellitype Pro 4), and it works fine, though the device manager tells me it's an "unknown device" in the keyboards area.
Reboot, however, and we're back to the OS thinking that it's a 101/102 standard keyboard with no startup (error code 10).
I'm baffled.
Anyone?

.: Windows Vista Beta 1 Distribution :.
Date: 11/08/05
(IT Professionals) Keywords: microsoft
For those who want to evaluate, the distribution is up for downloading.
www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/evaluate/betadist.mspx
I'm doing the hardware performance eval for my company to see if our existing systems can perform sufficiently with the new OS.
The download speed is quite fast. :) Almost 90% when I'm writing this.
The size is a total of 2.86GB in ISO format and needs to be burn to DVD. This means that the PCs have to have a DVD drive or perhaps I could do a Network Share with either a bootable CD or floppy; have to read the documentation on this.
Oh another thing, to download this, you need to be either a MSDN subscriber or a TechNet Plus subscriber.

Viewing sites in IE after failing in Firefox
Date: 11/08/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web, microsoft
(x-posted from firefoxusers - someone there suggested the IETab extension, but any other ideas?)
I've been noticing a problem recently with viewing sites in IE after I view them in Firefox. I use Firefox as my usual web browser, but if a site fails to work properly in Firefox I open up IE to look at it. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, when I try to view the site in IE I just get a blank white browser window. Is this some kind of attempt by Microsoft to f**k with people who use Firefox (which I wouldn't put past them) or a bug in my system? And how can I stop it from happening?
OS: Windows XP SP2
Firefox: 1.0.7
IE: Don't know the formal version number, but the latest version.
PS: If you can't help, please don't fill up my inbox with exhortations to boycott sites that aren't accessible to Firefox. I know the arguments, but these are sites I need to use.

"virtual" cd burning
Date: 11/09/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: microsoft
Hello. I would like to know if there is some way to create a "virtual" cd on my hard drive. What I want basically is to burn some songs with licences on them to this virtual cd, then be able to "rip" them back onto my hard drive as mp3's. Basically I can do this with a regular cd-r, but I don't want to waste a cd-r just to rip a few songs.
Thanks.
Oh yes, I am using Microsoft Windows xp home SP2.

Asynchronous JavaScript
Date: 11/11/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, xml, java, microsoft
I'm building a page and plan on using some Asynchronous JavaScript (AJAX without the XML basically). Anywho, the problem is, it just doesn't seem to work at all.
I've slowly worked my way through the code and I can't figure out for the life of me why it's just not working. I've tried using alert() to show my progress through the script, but it won't even show the first alert() which I had put before the function even creates it's first variable. I remove the code and leave only the alert() and it pops up.
function ajaxLauncher()
{
var args = ajaxLauncher.arguments;
var httpRequest = (window.ActiveXObject) ? new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP") : new XMLHTTPRequest();
switch (args[0])
{
case "begin_exe"
{
alert("Working!");
setContent();
ajaxLauncher("show_content", "mainContent[0]", "content");
break;
}
case "show_content"
{
if (httpRequest)
{
httpRequest.onreadystatechange = function()
{
if (httpRequest.readyState == 4 && httpRequest.Status == 200)
{
container = document.getElementByID(args[2]);
container.innerHTML = httpRequest.responseText;
}
}
httpRequest.open("GET", args[1], true);
httpRequest.send(null);
}
break;
}
}
}
function setContent()
{
mainContent = new Array();
mainContent[0] = "index2.html";
}
I'm calling it on my page's onload event.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
x-posted to Tek-Tips.
