Netscape Mail eating messages
Date: 05/17/05
Keywords: no keywords
Got a very bizarre, probably very simple problem going on with Netscape
mail/news v. 7.1 (I think) under WinXP:
It used to remind the user "Hey, you're working offline" when the user would attempt to send an e-mail written while offline. THen the user could connect to the net, then send the mail. Now, it has for some reason stopped doing that. Instead, the "sent" message seems to disappear. Does anyone know what Netscape Mail does with messages "sent" but unsendable because the user is offline? The "Sent" (but not really sent) mail does not show up in either the "out" or "Drafts" folders.
There is a 2-hour-long e-mail in the balance here, and I'd really like to
help my friend not have to redo it.

Mozilla Suite Installer Fails?
Date: 05/16/05
Keywords: virus, spyware
I'm happily using FireFox, but I need the composer functions from the full Mozilla suite.
I went and downloaded the newest Suite package from mozilla.org, but when I try to run the executable, it gets past extracting the XPI files and simply disappears - no error messages or anything! I also tried downloading the installer stub, but it flashes on the screen and disappears instantly...
I am running FireFox with absolutely no problems, and have had no other problems with my system. I'm running XP Pro SP2 on an Athlon64 3500+ with 1gig of ram. Spyware/Virus FREE.
Anybody know where I might look to solve this problem? I really need composer!
EDIT
Bugzilla to the rescue! I was bitten by a "long-standing bug": Installer exits with no error after unpacking files - problem with TMP environment var
I thought at first "But I don't have a space in my tmp environment var" (which is how the example works..).. But then I realized that the default tmp is under the "Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\tmp\" directory. So I looked there, and sure enough, there was a file left over from an installer months ago under "Documents and Settings\Username\" and the file's name was "local"... fits the bug exactly.
Deleting the file allowed the Mozilla suite installer to function. YAY!...
Anyway, I just edited this post to include this info in case anyone else runs across it.

HELP!!!
Date: 05/16/05
Keywords: no keywords
Ugh. I love firefox with all my heart, but I'm new to using. And with that, comes confusion. I was working with Firefox and it was all great. Then my computer froze for about a sec or 2. Then I tried to open up another window, but It said someting about choosing a different user. So I did, and Now I want to switch back. Does anyone know what the hell I'm talking abouts? Cause I'm confused myself. If it helps, it's in a window and it gives up the option of asking which user before you open firefox. Ugh. I dunno. I hope someone understands.
Thanks in advance!

TB won't work with Lycos POP mail
Date: 05/15/05
Keywords: web
I've been using Thunderbird for more than a year now and have had *almost* no major problems with it. I've recently decided to use TB to check my Lycos account email.
I've set up everything according to the mail.lycos.com website (it wasn't anything I couldn't figure out myself anyway) but when TB asks me for my lycos account password, nothing happens. Nothing at all. So when I click "GET MAIL" I get a message like "Sending of password did not succeed: Mail server mail.lycos.com did not respond".
I checked the Lycos mail website for troubleshooting and found nothing useful. I don't know if the problem is with Thunderbird or with lycos. My password is definetly correct, I'm not typing it wrong or entering the wrong one. And I have a premium account with Lycos so I *am* allowed to use an email client with my lycos mail.
Does anyone have any suggestions? How can I fix this problem?

Tbird
Date: 05/12/05
Keywords: no keywords
I have a couple of dumb questions.
First what are the differences between Tbird and the mail client in Mozilla?
Second, is there a run from file version of Tbird? I use FF at work, because I hate dealing with IE and FF runs right out of the folder, and I would rather use Tbird for email instead of OE.
Also... in a related question, the last two releases (1.3 and 1.4) of FF I couldn't find a run right of folder version on the FTP. Did they move these to a different area? If there is a trick to turning the .exe install into a run out of folder, please share.
Thank you in advance.

New Security Updates Now Available
Date: 05/12/05
Keywords: security
Firefox 1.0.4 and Mozilla 1.7.8 are now available. These new versions fix the critical vulnerabilities that were disclosed earlier in the week. Everyone should upgrade ASAP, especially Firefox users (since they suffer from both vulnerabilities)! For more information on the vulnerabilities, see Mozilla's security advisory on the issue, or one of my earlier posts here or in firefoxusers.

New Security Vulnerabilities
Date: 05/09/05
Keywords: software, java, security
As I posted in firefoxusers, new security vulnerabilities have been discovered in Mozilla-based products. The first is a cross-site scripting vulnerability which allows sites to execute code in the context of another site. The second, which only affects Firefox, allows arbitrary code execution through the software installation mechanism. Normally this would only be exploitable from sites that are allowed to install extensions (i.e. sites on your whitelist, which by default is only Mozilla Update), but when the two vulnerabilities are used together any site could trigger the execution of arbitrary code.
Patches (updated versions) are not yet available (but are expected soon), as these flaws were prematurely disclosed to the public. For now, the best temporary solution is to disable both JavaScript and Software Installation. See my original post in firefoxusers for more details. Also see these advisories:

Just bumped my pc, causing it to reset and now Firefox is dead. Everytime I try to open it I get the following message
"The procedure entry point ??_7nsAutoString@@6B@ ccould not be located in the dynamic link library xpcom.dll" . The browser opens but I can't see the pages.
I've tried uninstalling, system restore and still nada. Typing in the error message took me to this page only
http://www.chrisbeach.co.uk/core/scripts/entryViewer.php?ID=5232
which didn't really help.
Any ideas?

Firefox 1.0.3 - Extensions-Problem
Date: 05/05/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi!
Last night Firefox informed me about new versions of Flashgot, DeepestSender and another one I have forgot, and let them updating. Today I opened Firefox, I choosed my profile. Then it opened, but the default site didn't open and I wasn't able to do anything. It seems it has crashed, though it could be closed normally. I was angry and tried to find out what happened there and I remembered about reading an article that some Extensions have problems with 1.0.3. Without any hope to fix it, I switched into the folder where the profiles are stored and looked into my profile. Giving it just a trial, I renamed Extensions.rdf and opened Firefox again. Then, finally! That worked! Althought without the extensions Firefox works now again.
Can anyone tell me what happened there? Or do I have to wait until extensions compatible with Firefox 1.0.3 get released?

Update.Mozilla.org is looking for volunteers
Date: 05/03/05
Keywords: no keywords
Howdy my name's Cameron and I'm an editor at UMO. My job is to test and review extensions and themes that are submitted to UMO.
UMO is now hiring volunteers to help with this process. We are especially looking for MacOS and Thunderbird users, but any help from anyone is greatly appreciated.
You don't need any special skills, just be familiar with the use of your Mozilla program and have some spare time to burn.
If you're interested, sign up for a developer account and head over to the #umo channel on irc.mozilla.org. Send your name, timezone and any skills or experience you may have to scott at osuosl dot org (he's Kveton on IRC.)
As we all know, Firefox is an open source project and without the donations of time by volunteers things just don't happen. If you enjoy using Firefox/Thunderbird/Seamonkey in conjunction with extensions and themes, here's your chance to become a part of making it work.
I hope to see you there :)

Has anyone noticed?
Date: 05/03/05
Keywords: web, linux
Has anyonelse noticed in Mozilla 1.7.0 and higher (Mozilla.org build under FC2-Linux, maybe other builds, but I can't check) that clicking the 'screen' button on a comment in the LJ web client causes an immediate crash? Does this also carry over to Firefox? Is it LJ's code or Mozy that's at fault; if indeed this crash happens to you?
Is there a Bugzilla entry on this already? If not; there should be.
Qvacks.

Firefox news readers
Date: 04/28/05
Keywords: rss, browser
According to MozillaZine.org, NewsForge has an article that evaluates some of the news reader extensions that exist for Firefox.
Now, I used to use Thunderbird for my RSS and ATOM feeds, until I discovered SAGE. I switched mainly because I like how SAGE operates inside my browser- even though I still use Thunderbird for other reasons.
I was curious though, what does everybody else here use to manage their RSS/ATOM feeds? Or maybe some of you don't even use news feeds, if so why not- maybe you haven't found a good enough aggregator yet?
Anyways, feedbacks appreciated. ^_^

Firefox and Internet Hot Keys
Date: 04/27/05
Keywords: web
Hi, I'm relatively new to Firefox, and I have a question, and I was told that this was the best place to get an answer. I use a Logitech cordless keyboard (Cordless Freedom Optical) with internet shortcut keys, but none of them seem to work with Firefox. I set up a shortcut key to link to a particular website, and when I press the key, the name I've given the shortcut shows up on the screen as usual but nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks.

cache

Keywords: no keywords
Hi Gang,
In the old days, I seem to recall a way to point the cache folder to a new location. I went to Tool->Options...->Privacy->Cache. All you can do is set the Amount of space to use, but not where.
I got a new drive, and was hoping to use a partition for the cache folder, since the new drive is a LOT faster.
Is there a way? or am I totally wacked to want to do this?
TIA

What happened to all of the themes on mozilla.org? I've only seen one, which takes some digging to get to. Everything else is designed for Firefox now. I know there are a few on other sites, but none I've been really impressed with.

My kingdom for a way to banish these raxafraxin'

dialogue boxes that are forever appearing when I click the "Back" button. I know the page I'm trying to view contains POSTDATA. I don't need the friggin' browser telling me so. I want to go back to the page immediately before the one I'm on, and I don't want to click "Yes, I really, actually, honest-to-grapefruit mean it" every time, nor do I want to do silly dances where I go back three pages then forward two. Is there some way of telling the browser "Never ask this, just always assume I'm behaving deliberately"?

thunderbird question
Date: 04/23/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi all,
Is there a way to set up a filter which will automatically move all messages older than, say, two days from the inbox to another folder?
I can set a filter which will move messages older than a fixed date with no problem. Just need a way to change that date to (current date-2) and have it automatically run at close (or start up or whatever).
Thanks!

Exporting Mozilla Preferences and Extensions
Date: 04/23/05
Keywords: browser, linux
Does anyone know if there's a way to export your mozilla (or firefox) preferences and extensions, similar to the way you can export adblock filters? I know there's a way to copy your preferences from one computer to another regarding the browser, but it'd be nice if there was a handy "packaged" way to do so (I'm trying to setup profiles on mac/linux with the browsers configured the same but it's taking damn near forever). Is there an extension or anything that can handle this? Or am I just being far too lazy? hehe
And if I'm being far too lazy, and someone explain how/where/which files I should be copying in the preferences to make everything the same?
