1. Oh no! A message board question!

Date: 04/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, security, web

Ok, let me start off by saying that I did go back about a month looking through posts to see if this had been discussed recently.  Also, there are no community memories to check. So I feel that I've done my best to look before I post.  Also, I understand that the "these forums are the best" debate will go on forever and that it's impossible to get an unbiased answer.  That's why I just want opinions.

I'm looking for a nice, simple message board package for a client's website.  The only feature I absolutely need is the ability to attach files.  I don't want anything bloated or full of security holes, and I don't want anything that's not free.  So no phpBB, no vBulleting, no Invision PB, etc.

There are three that I am looking at right now:
    PunBB
    MyBB
    SMF

Now, PunBB would be my first choice since it is really simple, trimmed down, and looks nice.  However, the File Attachment mod for the newest version isn't done yet.

So I'm looking for opinions on the other two.  Anybody use either of them and have good/bad things to say?  Also, are there other, better free message boards out there that I'm missing?

  10. Firefox Pros and Cons

Date: 04/15/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, browser, css, security, microsoft, google

I'm not really looking for an answer in this post, mostly just the community's thoughts.

The high school that I attend has internet access, like most other high schools now a days, but our computer tech seems to think that Internet Explorer is the browser of choice and won't even consider looking at anything else. He's dependant on Microsoft and can't really think outside of the box. Anyways, he told me that for him to do anything, the district would have to put Firefox (the browser that I'm pushing) on the "aproved software list". I can come up with several key "pros" that Firefox has over IE, but I was wondering if any of you could tell me some that I'm overlooking. Here's what I have:

    - Pop-up blocking
    - Correct CSS rendering
    - Tabbed Browsing
    - Increased stability (has only crashed once on me)
    - Increased security (in respect to its lack of security holes that have plagued IE since forever)
    - Easy access to various search engines
    - Constantly updated to fix security holes
    - Completely free

If I have any misinformation, I was just led to believe it from whatever source, so sorry about that. I tried mozilla.org for any other differences but couldn't come up with any.

Also, right before I posted this, I thought I should search google just one last time to pick up anything I might have left off. This site sounds very persuasive. Maybe I should send most of this article or a link to it to the District instead?

  11. Windows Server 2003, Active Directory, Clustering.

Date: 04/15/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: security

First off, if anyone know of any tutorials for this stuff, please share.

I'm running this under vmware for now until I'm ready to make a real set of computers.

I installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise on two vmware machines, and one of them I created an active directory.

I went into the system settings and had the second vmware machine successfully "join" my domain. However, after reboot and I attempt to log into the domain, I get the error:

"The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The name or security ID (SID) of the domain specified is inconsistent with the trust information for that domain."

    What am I doing wrong?

  12. get file from remote site (sorta)..

Date: 04/15/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, security

    Hey everybody..

I've got kind of a weird problem, so let me explain what I'm trying to do before I get into code snippets.

I am working on a project where I want to do some kind of update notification when a user uses a "check for updates" type link. Each file in the script has a variable with a rev number. Ideally, I would like it to hit a script on MY site that has a "master" list of rev numbers. When I update one of the files, I put it up on the server and update the rev number in the master list. Ultimately (I have not gotten this far yet), the script will compare rev numbers from the manifest on the client side against the master list and then offer the new rev scripts as .txt file as downloads. I don't want it to automatically replace or download these files to the server directly for security reasons.

So far, my update script parses these files and gets the rev number on the client side without any problem. What I'm having problems with is actually getting the script to obtain and parse the master list from my site to compare with the generated manifest on the client side.

So far, I've thought about using file() to load the rev numbers into arrays, but if I do that, it'll be a HUGE pain to update the master file list with new rev numbers. Ideally, I'd like to have it include() a .php file on the other end that will read variables, then it would be a simple if between the $master_file_name (from my server) and the $client_file_name variables (from the client server). What I really don't want to do is do this via FTP unless I have to. I have to keep security in mind and it's bad enough I'm coding a script to try to snag stuff from a remote server, I really don't want to get ftp or a http download involved.

If I use file() (and use a text file rather than a php file), I could probably use str_replace() to cut out the variables on the client side, the only problem is the function I would need to write would likely be huge as the variables on the "master" list are all different. I also thought about doing this on the master/server side by writing some kind of "export" script or backend that will generate the file from the master.php file..include() won't work as my server parses it before sending it off.

Anyone got any hints as to what I need to do or a better way to do this?

  18. We'll all be better off if you just assume I'm clueless.

Date: 04/25/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: security, virus, antivirus, web

My Windows 98 SE has gone kaput. Kernel32.dll errors every which way, random reboots, all that jazz. I've got Norton AntiVirus and Personal Firewall (which crashes frequently, too), I run defrag and scandisk (not frequently enough, I admit), I run Spybot and AdAware and I have a copy of HJT. The only thing that seems to be wrong is, well, Windows. It acts like it's killing itself -- the autoimmune disease of computing, I suppose.
Now, I have terrible memory when it comes to time and order and such (something could have happened last week or two years ago, it's the same in my brain), so I can't quite tell you when this all started. I've had the computer for going on three years now.

It's currently "networked" to a computer running WindowsXP. We tried doing it ourselves, but we ended up calling in a professional, who got the internet hooked up between them but couldn't get anything else to work (said that some 98 copies just won't network properly with XP). I can't trade anything between the computers, but as I said, I do have internet. He had to modify something in the bios to even it that far, which is why I'm wary about formatting it.

My Norton subscription is running out in a few days, and I was planning on wiping my main drive before I renewed it (so I could reinstall it and everything else before it's renewed). Now, my mother and I can handle the wiping and reinstall part well enough (or we did on previous computers) but my main concern is that I won't be able to get the net up again, which is my primary motivation for having my own computer in the first place.

If necessary I might be able to get XP, but I hate it with a, er, mild passion. It would make networking and compatibility issues easier, I know, but I have some programs that only run on 98 (like Petz3, which I'm quite fond of, thank you) and frankly I just don't trust it. We've had problems with it storing information, including browsing stuff, that we can't delete, and that's a big nightmare for me. (Would switching completely to Firefox solve this? I only run IE on my computer because Firefox will randomly crash it).

Both our computers are custom-built. If it would be less hassle I might be able to convince my mother to just take it in and get it done. The people who work where we got them are very nice and very helpful and rarely charge a lot (they gave us a free upgrade when they messed something up once -- try to get that service from Best Buy). Alternately, my friend's uncle does computer repair and may have an idea of what to do.

Info: Custom-built by Advanced Computer Services. Running Windows98SE, 512 RAM (I don't know what type -- I'm on the other computer right now), 40gb master drive and 80gb slave drive. I believe I have a 1800+ Athlon processor (which is excellent and great and has worked wonderfully and I love it so much better than any Pentium I've had and all that). I've got Norton Internet Security 2004 (the AntiVirus needed renewed a month ago, but I've only been on about five times since then).

Looking for suggestions: Wipe it and reinstall 98, or try to get XP? Don't wipe it, just try to figure out what's wrong? If I do wipe and put in 98, how do I deal with the internet problem?

I'm pretty savvy with things like web and graphic design (and I haven't had a virus in years), but when it comes to OS's and networking I'm rather lost.

I'll answer any questions you ask about my computer -- I know I left a lot of stuff out, and I can't remember what. (I swear I don't do drugs and I haven't suffered any head trauma, I just naturally lack any usable memory.)
