Stream live audio from my website
Date: 06/08/05
(Web Development) Keywords: software, web, hosting
Our next adventure for our site is to produce a live (or pre-recorded) streaming radio show from our site. I'm looking into what the most reasonable (free/cheap) solution would be. The broadcast point would be in a remote location which has only satellite internet connection (Direcway.com - 100kbs up & 1Mbs down), so hosting directly is not much of an option. We would max out at four or five listeners. Real Audio offered a solution for carrying hundreds of simultaneous listeners, but they charge an insane amount of money for their service.
I'm looking for somewhere in between.
We have our site hosted professionally on a Unix server. Is there perhaps a way to use the web server as a broadcast point? Is there some sort of program that we could use to hop our signal from there? Isn't there a way I could just write it into some sort of server-side scripting rather than buying a chunk of software? Help!!
Thanks a million!!

XP SP 2
Date: 06/09/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: software, security
I uninstalled WinXP Service Pack 2 yesterday, because it was cheaper than buying more RAM (256MB seems to be too little?), and now the whole system runs much faster (ie I no longer have to log on and then go and put the kettle on while I wait for everything to boot up), which was the desired effect.
But am I missing anything MAJOR by not having SP2? The only noticeable differences were the Security Centre (but I use Norton anyway) and the Bluetooth software (but I already had Bluetooth software installed). Oh and the 'Set Program Access Defaults' option has disappeared from the Star Menu, but I can live without that
Any thoughts?

plagueish Norton and sluggishness (I'm probably one of those stupid people you always hear about)
Date: 06/10/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software
The First Thing -
Er. I became really anoyed with Norton recently (it is a very long story, and I think it really makes me look like an idiot, so I won't recount it completely), and tried to delete it. I really tried.
It won't go away. Now everytime I turn on my computer, it asks me to uninstall then install Norton.
As always, I went to the control panel / remove software place to try delete it, but this has clearly not worked, as only half of ol' Norton seems to have dissapeared. The other half won't go away. What can I do to get rid of this second and unwanted half of Norton? Will this place help me at all?
The Second Thing -
My computer is new, possibly a month or so old. It's windows XP, has lots of shiny programs, and came completely installed with all programs from somewhere. It has recently started working very very slowly. (Before the Norton problem, if you're wondering). I casually mentioned once that I'll have to get extra memory space, because 'my millions of photographs and music files are obviously slowing it down completely'.
'Hm'. Said a person overhearing, 'that shouldn't be your problem. Find your startup menu and...'
There followwed some advice about deleting unopened or unused programs. Some mention was also made about having too many taskbar icons.
What the hell was this person talking about? Is this the right sort of advice? What could be causing my computer slowness?

Zone Alarm woes and disappering programs (I think)
Date: 06/11/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, asp, security
I just updated to the newest version of Zone Alarm Security Suite. I've been having issues with it since. I've been trying to uninstall the program but that's been a bust so far as I keep getting this error message:
TrueVector Internet Monitor was not uninstalled.
The uninstaller was not able to stop the True Vector software services. This will happen if other software is using the True Vector Engine.
To uninstall make sure all other True Vector based programs have been closed.
Another problem that I am having is that my add/remove program list is acting all wonky. Instead of regular program names such as Nero burning rom and Winamp, it's being populated by aspi, CCHelp, CCScore, etc.
I would really appreciate it if anyone out there would help me out.
It's also my first post here so hello ^^
[edit]When I try to start up ZA, this error pops up.
vsmon.exe - Application Error

The memory could not be read.

SQL 2K5 Express Manager
Date: 06/14/05
(SQL Server) Keywords: software, technology, database, sql
I have a standalone system (WinXPPro) which has MSDE. This system will never have full-blown SQL Server, and will probably never have SQL Server 2005 Express edition (at least not until the other software running on it is certified for SQL2k5 Express)
I'm interested in having some simple tool to serve the same role as Enterprise Manager and Query Analyser do in SQL2k (queries, backups, database mods, etc). I'm thinking of downloading the SQL Server 2005 Express Manager, and using it for some simple database management tasks.
Has anyone downloaded the April CTP (Community Technology Preview) version of this tool? If so, how do you like it? Does it work well with MSDE? If I want to avoid mixing versions and avoid using unreleased and unsupported tools, is there an equivalent tool for MSDE 2000?
