hi...here's my problem

The other day I found a laptop that was discarded with some junk and decided to try my luck. It's a Compaq Presario 1500 and it seemed to be in good working order, and I have used it for a few days. However, this evening while I was using it, it froze and then wouldn't restart. Every time I turned it on it would go on, but just go to a black screen and windows wouldn't start. Eventually the computer would just shut off automatically. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem could be. I'm not really sure if it's a hardware or software problem. Being as I found this thing I don't want to put much money into it, but if it's something small I wouldn't mind taking a chance.

I have a webcam from my friend, and I'm having trouble getting it to work.
I'm sure I've installed all the software and all, but when I plug it in, my computer doesnt dectect it and declares it an unknown device. I've tried downloading stuff off sites, thinking it would fix the problem, but I'm unsure if what I'm downloading is the right stuff.
The webcam is a:
Logitech QuickCam 6.0.1
Any help, direction, or more stuff to download would be appreciated.

Hello, I’m a second year Computer Science student at Cal Poly, SLO. With no open source or real world experience however I'm really eager to get involved in the open source community and start help developing software. Does any one have any suggestions for a newb. I would like to work on development of web applications preferably using PHP, MySQL, XML and using Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax). However I am a beginner in all of these languages.
- What would be some good starting points for me? (Communities, progjects, work)
- Being that I'm a beginner how do I go about finding simple tasks/projects to start out with?
- Live Journal looks interesting to me but I have my heart set on learning PHP not perl. Is this dumb? Should I not be focused on the language but rather the project?
Thanks in advance for any advice you have for a newb.

PHP (& Smarty) mentor needed for SourceForge project

Hi PHP community members!
Awhile back, I started a SourceForge project with the goal of using it as a tool to better learn PHP & Smarty. I'm a CS graduate with experience working in C/C++, Perl, and especially ColdFusion (due to work), and I've decided that it's a good idea to learn PHP and Smarty, and what better way to do that than with an actual project that might be of some use to someone?
The problem is that, as a fairly new developer, it's freakin' hard to get a project like this off the ground the right way. I don't know the best practices for laying out the app's directories, where I should put my smarty files, that sort of thing. As a software engineer I understand and will be doing requirements analysis, use cases, the database schema(s), etc, and I understand PHP well, having hacked up some wikis and that sort of thing. It's just difficult to get a project like this off the ground. So, what I'm hoping is that there's one (or more, even) people out there who might be interested in working on a PHP project they can show off to others, and are willing to provide a little guidance. The project's website is http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbling - you'll not ethat I started it over a year ago; unfortunately, right after that things got terribly busy :) but now with a little more time, I want to get back at it.
The CVS has an initial stab at a directory layout and some config/environment stuff, taken from a suggested best practices on the smarty website, but I already have some questions on that, too.
Let me know if you're interested. Email to my username @ livejournal.com is fine. if nobody's into it, then I'll probably just go ahead and fuddle through my own way, but it sure would be nice to get some knowledge in from the beginning so that we/I don't have to redo it later!

DVD-R / DVD WRITER HELP NEEDED

my computer has a dvd writer, but i've never used it. i've had the computer for over a year, so i figured it was about time. yesterday, at target, i picked up some cheap "e-gear at target record: dvd-r" discs. i made this fun dvd with some software (arcsoft showbiz2) on my computer. i went to put in the disc, but this is where the problem is/starts.
i put one of this blank dvd-r's in the "hp dvd writer/cd-writer combo". (i've used it as a cd-writer, but never as a dvd writer, like i said before.) this cursor/icon (it's a pointer with a small cd beside it) appears for a moment, but that's all that happens. when i look at the drive under "my computer," it just says "dvd/cd-rw drive." the properties have it named as HP DVD Writer 300n. everything appeared to be working normally under the properties, but nothing is recognizing these discs. so, i (re)installed the drivers. i restarted the computer, and it said "new hardware installed--dvd writer" or whatever. so i'm pretty sure the computer is recognizing the dvd writer. (but i could be wrong, because i've never used it before.) because of this, i'm lead to assume that the media is "bad." i tried multiple discs, but all of them have done the same thing. i googled the discs though, and i found a few websites where people acted like they worked.
what do you all think is wrong? do you have anything else for me to try? (if it's the dvd-r's, do you know if target will take them back? lol) i'm sort of upset, because i was excited about my first dvd (which i had a fun time making, btw).

Can anyone help me understand streams vs downloads? I'm researching starting a music hosting site and have a few questions
01. How does download a song compare to streaming it bandwidth wise? If I stream a 3mb song or download a 3mb song is it consuming the same amount of bandwidth?
02. Where can I find more information about streaming music? Is there software involved? What the most common (or only way) to get a file to stream rather than download.
03. Are there different stream qualities? I've heard something about it and never really put thought into it until I realized the stream quality from MySpace.com is much worse than PureVolume.com (Could just be me). How do you control the quality of your stream?
