I am not a developer. I repeat: I am not a developer. My brain's so fried I can't even remember what I learned about CSS.

Neither am I a designer. I just do a hell of a lot of stuff on the Web poking about. I'm a writer.

Right now I'm testing Flooble Chatterbox on two different pages. I beg you, beg, beg, cry, crawl, plead with you to drop by either of the following pages (or both if you're just a really generous soul) and say hello in the chatterboxes on the pages.

If you want to, leave a URL to the favorite webpage/site you've designed or your journal.

    Real Life vs. The Internet

    or "Wired!"

I tried to use Shoutbox at first for this, but it wouldn't load consistently. That bugged me. If anyone knows of a better program, please tell me. Also, if anyone knows of good, easy to administrate forum software, I'd be happy to know that too.

    Thank you so much.

  11. Speed of gif animations

Date: 02/22/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, browser

Is it just me or do gif animations seem to run too fast in Firefox? Take a look at my hypnotoad icon in firefox, then take a look at it in IE or another browser/viewer. There's a signifciant difference in speed.

I've noticed this with another icon recently as well. I tried viewing a gif animation in Irfan view as well and it was the same speed as in IE. This leads me to believe that Firefox has a bug that's running the animation too fast, rather than IE running it too slow.

Please note that gif animations have delays specified in the number of milliseconds, so if it's running at a different speed in some software, it's because of a bug not obeying the time delays correctly.

Here's a gif to test with in addition to my icon:

Just a quick post to introduce a new series of articles that I've been engaged to write that will cover Linux, the philosophy of Open Source Software, various projects that exist and, principally, my experiences with Linux over the coming months. They're supposed to be an informative and mildly humorous introduction to the subject, as well as tracing the course of my own (newbie to Linux) travails, tribulations and (hopefully) triumphs.

Check out the image of the tank.. it's in a div that's floated right... and that div is also in a div that's floated left (to make the left column).

The problem is - the image is linked. It works fine in IE, but you can't "get to" the link in firefox.

The page validates... I don't *see* anything particularly odd...

Date: 01/14/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: software, asp, virus, microsoft

Here's a few things I learned yesterday that might be helpful for all. (After working through some frustrating bugs.)

    1) Enable MS DTC in the Add/Remove Programs app in Control Panel ( it's under Windows Options --> Application Server --> Details. This service is no longer enabled by default in the Windows setup.
    2) You have to set up a resource for the MS DTC service. ( Read about it here, in the transcript portion: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888121 )
    3) UNINSTALL TERMINAL SERVICES ON ALL NODES!! ( Even if you don't think you installed it in the first place!! )
    4) TURN OFF VIRUS SCAN SOFTWARE ( and any other unecessary services that may be running)
    5) Make sure you set up a server alias via the Client Network Utility on the node from which you're doing the installation BEFORE launching setup app. Make sure your service account has rights to log in to both nodes.

  19. Comcast fun

Date: 02/16/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: software

I bought the parts for a AMD Thoroughbreed PC awhile ago but I have been really slow about putting it together as I am primarily a Mac user and just wanted a computer to play Windows-only/DOS games on. I have Windows 2000 Pro installed on it. I recently tried to get it online using the ethernet adapter that came with my motherboard (SiS 900), connecting via comcast high speed internet going through a router. I have looked all over my modem but haven't been able to figure out what model it is. At any rate, I don't have the software for it. I have TCP/IP installed and have it set up to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically, which is what every site I've looked at has said to do. My computer recognizes that there is a Local Area connection, but I can't ping anything or connect to the internet at all. I know the modem and the router work just fine because we have two Macs that use them. The RJ-45 is also fine because it's the same one I'm using right now on my laptop. Any suggestions on what to do?

Please delete this if it's not appropriate for this community - I'm new to Windows and so I wasn't sure where else to post it.

Edit: I have tried ipconfig /renew which gives the error, "The following error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection: DHCP Server unreachable." When trying ipconfig I get: Autoconfiguration IP Address: 0.0.0.0 Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0 and nothing for the DNS Suffix and the Default Gateway...

Edit 2: Well, my father always told me that we have a router. Apparently that is not true and we have a hub (and have only paid for 2 IPs, when we needed 3). So, we're going to buy a router today and as far as I understand that should fix my problems. Thanks all.
