what's a good filesize for video on the web?

beyond that, what's some good (free?) OS X software that can compress video. my boss wants me to put up some videos for the new site and all (which looks amazing thanks to you guys and the folks over at graphicdesign), but right now they're 10-13mb each and i'm quite sure that's a bandwith disaster waiting to happen.

  3. Seeking Opinions on large volume data storage

Date: 01/10/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, database

    Problem

I'm considering upgrading my data storage. Right now I store my data on CD-Rs and DVD-Rs. There is an article out today saying that the life of these disks is shorter than most people assume.

Storage expert warns of short life span for burned CDs

The volume of data is fairly large (between 2 and 3 terabytes). The data is of many types. Video, Audio, Pictures, office Documents, Software, databases, source code, hard drive images etc... Just a bunch of miscellaneous data big and small.

    Solution 1 - Build a file server

My first thought was to build a separate box with a bunch of hard drives. The assumption being that hard drives are going to be more durable than CDs or DVDs. If I shell out some serious bucks on hard drives, disk controllers and a large power supply I think I could get it all on one box comfortably with room to expand.

    Upsides

    • Data will be easily accessible.

    • Hard drives are more durable than other media (Assumption)

    • There are good maintenance applications for hard drives.

    • Organization. Easier to keep hard drives organized

    • Very Compact

    Downsides

    • Cost.

    • Time required to build box

    • Maintenance of another computer

    • Software expense

    • electricity usage

Solution 2 - Buy External USB Hard Drives and HUB

I could buy USB based hard drives and connect them to my PC through a hub.

    Upsides

    • Less expensive

    • Doesn't require building another box

    • No software needed

    • easy Maintenance

    Downsides

    • Cables. This will require a lot of data cables and power cables

    • Need something to contain it all like a cabinet

    • USB Reliability?(Info Needed)

    • Drive Reliability?(Info Needed)

    • Data Transfer speed?(Info Needed)

    Solution 3 - Tape Storage

I haven't used tapes in years so I don't know what the cost/reliability issues arise with tapes.

  7. syndication backup software

Date: 01/11/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software

I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive would like to use to back up pictures and mp3s and office documents, etc.

I really do not want to use the built-it windows backup software as it creates the back up as one large file.

I want to be able to just connect the external USB 2.0 hard drive to a computer and get the data off it without having to use a “restore” function. So the data I see on my IDE internal drive is the same as I see on the external drive.

I would like to be able to just sync the new files that have been added rather then recreating the back up.

  12. icon associations / upload problems

Date: 01/15/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

After installing some software, I've somehow lost the icon associations for some graphic images. (jpg and gif, mainly) The icon is the windows white "square", with the bent corner and the windows "window" inside of it. (no, not the flying windows icon.) In a folders details view, all the extensions are intact, and by double clicking on them, the appropriate associated application launches. In Properties of the file, it says "Opens with unknown application", yet, as I said, double clicking does open it in the appropraie program.

Of course, Tools \ Folder Options\ File Types allows me to remedy this, but the icons for jpgs and gifs do not seem to be there for me to associate with the file types.

As a kicker, I've had some websites where I uploaded pictures to, bark at me when I attempt to upload a jpg or gif. I doubt these 2 are related, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it.

    XP, sp2.

    Any thoughts?
    !
    Thanks!

After a bunch of "RESTORE and "CHANGE ICON" clicks, it seems to have righted itself. Thanks!

My Aunt Eva's computer has 366 viruses and 299 instances of spyware infecting it. Prior to my installing a combined anti-virus and anti-spyware software, it seems to have gone unchecked and unprotected since somewhere around 2003.

  15. Staggered (Batch) Copying

Date: 01/18/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software

I'm looking for a program that can do staggered copying. Quite frequently, I need to copy large amounts of data (Hundreds of GB to TB) from external SCSI, Firewire, Shared Storage, etc., to other external drives. Also quite frequently, while dragging & dropping and the copying is starting, the computer gets sluggish, or cannot continue to copy from and to multiple sources simultaneously. Error messages ensue. Rather than wait the hours and hours for one drive to finish, just to start another manually, is there an application out there to "batch" copy commands to pickup once the previous is done?

I encounter this under both Mac OS and PC platforms, so I'm open to any piece of software.

    Thanks!

Date: 09/23/05 (Apache)    Keywords: php, software, apache

I recompiled apache and PHP months ago to install mcrypt and cURL so billing software would work. I've recently changed billing software, and while troubleshooting the install, found that it wasn't working correctly because mcrypt wasn't installed. So I'm wondering...where'd it go? It *was* installed. Even if apache has upgraded itself recently, it wouldn't make sense that mods would need to be reinstalled each time. I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I know I'm not providing a lot of details....but I'm not quite sure where to start looking.
