1. damn you video!

    Date: 01/09/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

    what's a good filesize for video on the web?

    beyond that, what's some good (free?) OS X software that can compress video. my boss wants me to put up some videos for the new site and all (which looks amazing thanks to you guys and the folks over at graphicdesign), but right now they're 10-13mb each and i'm quite sure that's a bandwith disaster waiting to happen.

    Opera 9 preview is availiable for download from today. check it out

    I'm using it now and it fixes for just about everything that was even remotely wrong with Opera before.

    Rich text editing now works (try it updating LJ); flash doesn't overlap things it shouldn't; IMAP is actually useful; support for XSLT/webforms/CSS3 selectors; even more configurable (opera:config)... the list goes on.

    It completely blows Firefox out of the water.

    Seriously, you want it.

    (if you do download it, be sure to back up everything - despite being very stable, this is still technically pre-beta software. Use at your own risk!)

  3. PHP (& Smarty) mentor needed for SourceForge project

    Date: 06/16/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, software, database, web

    Hi PHP community members!

    Awhile back, I started a SourceForge project with the goal of using it as a tool to better learn PHP & Smarty. I'm a CS graduate with experience working in C/C++, Perl, and especially ColdFusion (due to work), and I've decided that it's a good idea to learn PHP and Smarty, and what better way to do that than with an actual project that might be of some use to someone?

    The problem is that, as a fairly new developer, it's freakin' hard to get a project like this off the ground the right way. I don't know the best practices for laying out the app's directories, where I should put my smarty files, that sort of thing. As a software engineer I understand and will be doing requirements analysis, use cases, the database schema(s), etc, and I understand PHP well, having hacked up some wikis and that sort of thing. It's just difficult to get a project like this off the ground. So, what I'm hoping is that there's one (or more, even) people out there who might be interested in working on a PHP project they can show off to others, and are willing to provide a little guidance. The project's website is http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbling - you'll not ethat I started it over a year ago; unfortunately, right after that things got terribly busy :) but now with a little more time, I want to get back at it.

    The CVS has an initial stab at a directory layout and some config/environment stuff, taken from a suggested best practices on the smarty website, but I already have some questions on that, too.

    Let me know if you're interested. Email to my username @ livejournal.com is fine. if nobody's into it, then I'll probably just go ahead and fuddle through my own way, but it sure would be nice to get some knowledge in from the beginning so that we/I don't have to redo it later!

    Cheers!

  4. The PHP/mySQL issue

    Date: 06/07/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, software, html, xml, database, asp, sql, security, web, apache

    Here's what I have
    Apache 1.3.33
    PHP 5.0.4
    MySQL 4.1.12a
    Operating System: Windows 98

    The error that I got when I tried using mysql_connect() on a php page:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect()

    Things that I have done so far:
    Apache, mySQL, and PHP are in directories on the C drive, named accordingly

    in php.ini, this is what I changed (change in italics)
    doc_root = "C:\Apache\htdocs"
    extension_dir "C:\php\ext"

    Removed the ";" in front of extension = php_mysql.dll (Is there supposed to be quotation marks on this line?)

    Saved a copy of php.ini (after these changes) in the C:\Windows directory
    Saved copies of c:\php\libmysql.dll & c:\php\ext\php_mysql.dll to the C:\Windows directory

    [PHP]

    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About php.ini ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
    ; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
    ; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
    ; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
    ; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
    ; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
    ; the -c argument in command line mode.
    ;
    ; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
    ; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
    ; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
    ; they might mean something in the future.
    ;
    ; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
    ; directive = value
    ; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
    ;
    ; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
    ; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
    ; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
    ;
    ; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
    ; | bitwise OR
    ; & bitwise AND
    ; ~ bitwise NOT
    ; ! boolean NOT
    ;
    ; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
    ; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
    ;
    ; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
    ; sign, or by using the None keyword:
    ;
    ; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
    ; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
    ; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
    ;
    ; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
    ; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
    ; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
    ;
    ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About this file ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This is the recommended, PHP 5-style version of the php.ini-dist file. It
    ; sets some non standard settings, that make PHP more efficient, more secure,
    ; and encourage cleaner coding.
    ;
    ; The price is that with these settings, PHP may be incompatible with some
    ; applications, and sometimes, more difficult to develop with. Using this
    ; file is warmly recommended for production sites. As all of the changes from
    ; the standard settings are thoroughly documented, you can go over each one,
    ; and decide whether you want to use it or not.
    ;
    ; For general information about the php.ini file, please consult the php.ini-dist
    ; file, included in your PHP distribution.
    ;
    ; This file is different from the php.ini-dist file in the fact that it features
    ; different values for several directives, in order to improve performance, while
    ; possibly breaking compatibility with the standard out-of-the-box behavior of
    ; PHP. Please make sure you read what's different, and modify your scripts
    ; accordingly, if you decide to use this file instead.
    ;
    ; - register_globals = Off [Security, Performance]
    ; Global variables are no longer registered for input data (POST, GET, cookies,
    ; environment and other server variables). Instead of using $foo, you must use
    ; you can use $_REQUEST["foo"] (includes any variable that arrives through the
    ; request, namely, POST, GET and cookie variables), or use one of the specific
    ; $_GET["foo"], $_POST["foo"], $_COOKIE["foo"] or $_FILES["foo"], depending
    ; on where the input originates. Also, you can look at the
    ; import_request_variables() function.
    ; Note that register_globals is going to be depracated (i.e., turned off by
    ; default) in the next version of PHP, because it often leads to security bugs.
    ; Read http://php.net/manual/en/security.registerglobals.php for further
    ; information.
    ; - register_long_arrays = Off [Performance]
    ; Disables registration of the older (and deprecated) long predefined array
    ; variables ($HTTP_*_VARS). Instead, use the superglobals that were
    ; introduced in PHP 4.1.0
    ; - display_errors = Off [Security]
    ; With this directive set to off, errors that occur during the execution of
    ; scripts will no longer be displayed as a part of the script output, and thus,
    ; will no longer be exposed to remote users. With some errors, the error message
    ; content may expose information about your script, web server, or database
    ; server that may be exploitable for hacking. Production sites should have this
    ; directive set to off.
    ; - log_errors = On [Security]
    ; This directive complements the above one. Any errors that occur during the
    ; execution of your script will be logged (typically, to your server's error log,
    ; but can be configured in several ways). Along with setting display_errors to off,
    ; this setup gives you the ability to fully understand what may have gone wrong,
    ; without exposing any sensitive information to remote users.
    ; - output_buffering = 4096 [Performance]
    ; Set a 4KB output buffer. Enabling output buffering typically results in less
    ; writes, and sometimes less packets sent on the wire, which can often lead to
    ; better performance. The gain this directive actually yields greatly depends
    ; on which Web server you're working with, and what kind of scripts you're using.
    ; - register_argc_argv = Off [Performance]
    ; Disables registration of the somewhat redundant $argv and $argc global
    ; variables.
    ; - magic_quotes_gpc = Off [Performance]
    ; Input data is no longer escaped with slashes so that it can be sent into
    ; SQL databases without further manipulation. Instead, you should use the
    ; function addslashes() on each input element you wish to send to a database.
    ; - variables_order = "GPCS" [Performance]

    Date: 11/16/05 (Software)    Keywords: software, database

    Hello.

    In an effort to speed up the process (and eliminate the amount of dead tree used) in the course of monitoring my work, I decided to not bother with the paper forms my precessor had been using.

    I decided that a Access Database was the way forward (simple to use, and the Access software is on all the computers at work here). For the first couple of weeks I was here, this worked fine, as there was only me using it, and it was on 'my' network drivespace. This morning I was granted access to the shared filespace. This meant that myself and my colleague will be able to use the database.

    Now, the problem I have is that sometimes, things that he has entered don't show up, and things that I have altered don't show up. I have had a look at 'help', and it suggested using 'Records -> Refresh' to make any changes show up. I added a button to the form (which looks like this) to make this simpler.

    I'm not 100% convinced that this is working 100% of the time. Is there a way of forcing the database to refresh itself, so that the most recent version of the table containing the data is always the most recent?

    There's a new folksonomy software project - MyProgs.net.
    You can store there list of programs you use, but the real point is something much more interesting:
    You can easily find new / interesting / popular software in various categories, track after specific categories and many other things, like always knowing when your friend or colleague found another interesting program.
    For example, here is my list: MyProgs.net/kuchin

    I have several documents that I need to access from multiple workstations, at home and at work, where it would just be simpler if I could access them via an Internet file store somehow.

    I'm not bothered if I need to install plug-in software to do it, or even (despite the subject) if it's not via drive letter access. Some other form of access is fine as long as the opening and saving is streamlined, and doesn't require FTP etc.

    Is there such a thing available?

  12. compressed strings and errors.

    Date: 08/28/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: software

    I'm writing up something for the '[info]'all_complexity community but I'm having trouble with my argument. It goes like this:

    Explain why software code is brittle, in the sense that small changes in it break everything, while genetic codes accrete changes all the time and a written text can make do with plenty of spelling errors.

    I first appeal to Shannons' work on signal theory, that natural language and possibly the genetic one has a lot of redundancy, allowing the message to persist. On the other hand, a sanely written piece of computer code is consistent and as small as practically possible.

    I further argue that capturing the desired behaviour of the program in as little code as possible is in itself a form of compression, trying to shrink the size of the program down to the kolmogorov complexity of the desired output.

    Here's the fuzzy part of my argument:
    I claim handwavingly that since compression exploits and removes any pattern in the text, changing one byte in the compressed text will have a very large effect on the to-be-extracted plaintext. I know this is a hallmark of good encryption, but is this true for compressed text as well?

    I could argue that n bytes in the compressed file must affect >n bytes in the plaintext since the plaintext has more bytes and they all need to be "caused" by the compressed bytes.

    Is this a sound argument? I'd rather base the argument on real informatics than my own top-of-my-head musings. :-)

  13. Staggered (Batch) Copying

    Date: 01/18/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software

    I'm looking for a program that can do staggered copying. Quite frequently, I need to copy large amounts of data (Hundreds of GB to TB) from external SCSI, Firewire, Shared Storage, etc., to other external drives. Also quite frequently, while dragging & dropping and the copying is starting, the computer gets sluggish, or cannot continue to copy from and to multiple sources simultaneously. Error messages ensue. Rather than wait the hours and hours for one drive to finish, just to start another manually, is there an application out there to "batch" copy commands to pickup once the previous is done?

    I encounter this under both Mac OS and PC platforms, so I'm open to any piece of software.

    Thanks!

    Of course, Tools \ Folder Options\ File Types allows me to remedy this, but the icons for jpgs and gifs do not seem to be there for me to associate with the file types.

    As a kicker, I've had some websites where I uploaded pictures to, bark at me when I attempt to upload a jpg or gif. I doubt these 2 are related, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it.

    XP, sp2.

    Any thoughts?
    !
    Thanks!

    After a bunch of "RESTORE and "CHANGE ICON" clicks, it seems to have righted itself. Thanks!

  16. Anti-virus/firewall advice

    Date: 11/23/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: software, virus, spyware

    I'm getting DSL, and I've been advised that I need to get serious about protecting my computer. I'm asking for recommendations for anti-virus/firewall/spyware software. Is there anything that does all three? It's always irritated me that I'm expected to buy three kinds of software.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  17. Google and Firefox

    Date: 12/11/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, virus, spyware, google

    Hi!

    I have encountered something strange here using Google and Firefox 1.5. Whenever I'm trying to search for something which contains the word "forum" I get this message:

    We're sorry...

    ... but we can't process your request right now. A computer virus or spyware application is sending us automated requests, and it appears that your computer or network has been infected.

    We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your computer is free of viruses and other spurious software.

    We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we'll see you again on Google.

    I have tried it in IE 6 and Opera 7, but I don't get this message using them. What is this? I have scanned my system already for Spyware, but there was nothing major. But I haven't checked for Viruses yet, because it takes long. Well, AntiVir didn't notice anything as I have started (it checks the memory and current processes).

    Does anyone else gets this message?

    -------------
    EDIT:

    It seems I'm not the only one who had this problem: Thread in the german Firefox support forum. Now I have cleared the cache and history... and guess what? It works now! :D

    But, still, it was somewhat confusing.

    I am trying to set-up my own guestbook and blogging software on my site (http://www.tavishmisra.com/) but it is not letting me run PHP or CGI scripts. How do I enable this on my server?

  19. "Acoustic Fingerprint" Software

    Date: 01/20/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software

    I use ieatbrainz on my Mac to clean up my MP3 files, but I now find that 1.0.7 does not run under 10.3.8. Starts to launch, then crashes. No error messages.

    However, I can always clean up the tags on Windows. (XP sp2) Anyone have any alternative software solutions?

    Thanks!

  20. mod_rewrite to utf8 url

    Date: 01/20/06 (Apache)    Keywords: php, software

    My site's software produces and handles urls in the form

    http://www.wikiznanie.ru/wiki/index.php/xxx

    (the translation from the form above into http://www.wikiznanie.ru/wiki/index.php?title=xxx is transparent)

    Now what I need is when a vistor ask for a root document - he gets the same page as http://www.wikiznanie.ru/wiki/index.php/xyz without any redirects (internal or external). The problem is tha xyz - is actually a utf-8 url-encoded string and when I use the rule

    RewriteRule ^/$ /index.php/%D0%93%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_ [PT,NE]

    the resulting requested page (utf8) url is distorded.

    What should I do? Is there a way to get through mod_rewrite with an utf-8 url-encoded string in it's original form?
