    Hello everybody

I hardly need a very old program called RightWriter 7.0 (Windows version). It's a stylechecker. I know that they don't sell it anymore but I believe that someone may still have it on floppies.

    I could even buy it...

    TIA for any help.

  4. Adobe Flash courses?

Date: 09/04/07     Keywords: software, asp, web

Anyone have recommendations on Adobe Flash courses? I was looking at the New Horizons website (http://www.newhorizons.com/content/courseSchedule.aspx?ClassID=300003333&SiteID=45), where they offer 1 or 2-day long courses in all different kinds of software. This company was recommended to me by a friend, but they don't necessarily offer the specific courses I want in my area. I live in Westchester just north of NYC, so something in the Westchester/NYC/Connecticut area would be ideal.

    Thanks!

  5. Server Woes

Date: 08/30/07     Keywords: web, linux, spam

    Greetings and Salutations!
    I have an interesting issue.

I am running a mail / domain controller on SELinux.
There is a webmin interface installed.
    There is webmail.
The mail service is a variation of sendmail called SquirrelMail.
The mail server is also running ClamAV and SpamAssassin.

Tuesday a problem appeared around 11AM where the outbound mail service just stalls.
I starting looking at the queue and I noticed an inordinate amount of replies to bad addresses from the Mailer Daemon that are timing out. On peeking in on them I discovered that they are bouncebacks on emails sent to bad addresses here and that they are spam (no surprise there). Many of these messages are stalling in the queue and I suspected that this was the problem. Clearing the queue did not fix the issue, but restarting sendmail did and still does make the outbound process work.

So, last night, I updated ClamAV (no update needed), sendmail (update completed) and SA (update completed).
I hoped that the problem would go away but it did not. In fact, it is now worse. The frequency that I must manually restart the sendmail service has gone up.

In an effort to provide less overall interruption to my users I created a cron task to do this for me.
    Here is the script:
    #/bin/bash
    #this is to restart sendmail
    date >>/etc/mailcron.log
    service sendmail stop>>/etc/mailcron.log
    service sendmail start>>/etc/mailcron.log
    echo "mailtab1 process done
    ">>/etc/mailcron.log

Now, here is the interesting part.
The cron is set to run every 10 minutes (minutes ending in 3)
    It runs.
The output put into the log file when it runs automatically is incomplete:
    Thu Aug 30 11:23:01 EDT 2007
    mailtab1 process done

So, obviously the script it running, but it is only time-stamping and informing me that it is done.

The more interesting part is that when I run the task manually it works:
    Thu Aug 30 11:25:19 EDT 2007
    Shutting down sm-client: [ OK ]
Shutting down sendmail: [ OK ]
    Starting sendmail: [ OK ]
    Starting sm-client: [ OK ]
    mailtab1 process done

    WHY?

I need a solution to one (or, preferably, both) of these problems. I also have a second script that does the mailreload command.

My current plan, based on some of the mail server logs showing errors with the ClamAV milter, is to uninstall and reinstall clamav tonight afterhours. Thoughts?

  6. ZSNES "HID" USB easy?

    Date: 08/12/07     Keywords: web

Does the emulator program ZSNES support average run of the mill HID USB controllers? I want to buy my first one, a cheap no-name brand that's locally available. I just want it to work. It's website says I don't need any DLLs. I have just plain Windows XP pro, without anything added. My last memories of using controllers with computers years ago we're buggy, filled with unhappiness, and troubleshooting. I expect it won't just work out of package, that I'll have to calibrate it once at the Windows level, and once inside ZSNES to set each individual direction. And then do this all again for a second controller for a friend. And then never unplug them, so as to not reset everything again.

  7. Export Windows XP's registry without running Windows XP?

    Date: 08/06/07     Keywords: software, linux

While running Linux on the same machine where Windows XP (Pro, with SP1) is installed, or while running Win9x on another machine that has read access to XP's registry files, is there software I could use to export the registry to a .reg file?

The NTFS partition is mounted read-only, and I don't need or want write access to it. I just have a bunch of Win32 software installers that can't run on Wine, but the software itself is said to run fine on Wine if a working installation on Windows is just copied over along with everything it needs from the registry.

I know that I could run REGEDIT on XP to export it easily, but rebooting that particular machine this week would be inconvenient.

REGEDIT does run on Wine, but the Load Hive option in the File menu is grayed out. I don't know whether that's because Windows has to be running to make that option available, or whether I might need only to copy the right files from XP over to Wine's fake C: drive to make it work.

Two other machines on the local network have Windows installed, but the versions are 95C and 98SE. On either of those two, REGEDIT seems to expect the computer's name to be enough information to let the data be made human-readable, so I assume it would need (at the very least) for Windows to be running on the same Linux system that I don't want to shut down.

Installing XP on an emulator on Linux right now is out of the question for various reasons.

So, I'm hoping (in vain?) that some free and legal software exists that understands XP's registry files well enough to convert them to .reg format. So far, everything I've found requires that an NT-based Windows version be up and running to do the actual conversion. Any ideas?

  9. DivX, Xvid, maybe others at same time ok?

    Date: 07/21/07     Keywords: no keywords

Can i install DivX, Xvid at the same time andnot have any compatibility problems? I don't want them arguing witheach other, I only want them to coexist peacefully in the same XPcomputer without bickering. I'm not really familiar with theintricacies of codecs, but I think I understand a single movie isUSUALLY released in only one type of codecs format at a time, right, oram I wrong... If I install these two, and the emerging x264 as well, Idon't want any problems, Is this a simple affair or will I have to getdirty in the details? I'd like to install as little as possible, likingto easily track what exactly is being changed in a way that I'm atleast semi-aware of, but both Xvid and especially x264 are new to me. Idon't want to lose control and have the computer turn into messy ballof unsolvable wax and have to reinstall again. Not soon anyways.

  10. Codec help. Can't watch AVIs

    Date: 07/21/07     Keywords: no keywords

What do I need to do to watch downloaded AVI? None of them are working since I reinstalled Windows XP. I installed my videocard and soundcard drivers, both latest. When I open Windows Media Player, I get an error message, saying in a convoluted way somethings wrong with my codecs and I need the right ones. I put in Direct X (said yes to everything), no difference. I then put in Combined Community Codec Pack, which a friend told me solves nearly all these codec "problems". I get sound now, and instead of a completely black image, I get a really really dark grey of everything, on my maximum contrast/brightness. I don't know what else to "download" or install. Please help. How do we get "raw" Windows installations compatible with the content the Internet throws at us TODAY?

    Date: 07/05/07     Keywords: no keywords

Right, so. I lost my Photoshop CD a loooong time ago and, since then, bought myself a new laptop. Photoshop is still installed on my PC, but the computer way too slow for me to even go online. I've tried zipping up the program and burning it to a disk, but obviously, that didn't work. So I have two questions.

    A) Does anyone know how I could easily get Photoshop off of my computer and onto my laptop? If not -
B Does anyone know where I could download any version of Photoshop? My free trial expired and I'm completely broke.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  16. lose reinstalling?

    Date: 03/31/07     Keywords: hosting

As I prepare to reincarnate my computer this weekend, I go through the ritual of preperations. Hunting for largest folders, preperaring to do my first ghosting of just the C:\. I've got 3 years of crap I intend to lastly sift through tomorrow. Can you guys make sure I've sorted all data wheat from the applications chafe? You know, the standard ethos of proper backup. That stuff about seperating into two partitions, one is called C:\ and it houses Windows and Programs, and the other is home to irreplaceable precious loved data.

    • Question: What irreplacable data is hidden in the registry... I should look for some specific keys. I can't back up that whole mess (~75MB) because That's the whole point, to clear out 3 years of registry crap without the knowledge of a precise computer surgeon.

Let me tell what I've done.

    • I've backed iTunes ratings (extension: itl).
    • I've backed Outlook Express e-mails (moved extensions: dbx to safe place).
    • I've backed Address book (as extension: iaf).
    • I've backed Firefox's well everything I can with (as extension: pcv with MozBackup).
    • I've backed My Documents, My Music, and My Picutres (moved to another partition with TweakUI). I fastidiously kept all personally crafted data I know of in those places.
    • I've listed all those little neat programs whose names I will forget.

    • I don't care about Internet Explorer Favorites, they can go to hell.

  17. 2nd Anniversary of Vanilin MIDI Keyboard

    Date: 03/23/07     Keywords: software, html

Vanilin MIDI Keyboard celebrates it's 2nd anniversary!
The program I wrote has several advantages over many other virtual keyboards.

Vanilin MIDI Keyboard intercepts all keystrokes on your
computer, so it can be played in minimized state.

    MAJOR FEATURES:
+ play it in any window
+ pedal key (CTRL or SHIFT)
    + resizable
    + skinnable

    NOT SUCH MAJOR FEATURES:
    + customizable keyboard layout
    + vertical keyboard mode
+ zoom in and zoom out
    + can minimize to tray
    + can be disabled

Note: as with other virtual MIDI keyboards, you need to
install a driver like Hubi's Loopback or MIDI Yoke in
order to connect this program to your sequencer.

MIDI Yoke driver for Windows NT4, 2000, XP (43 KB):
