monitor turns off at inappropriate times... how stop?
Date: 01/08/07
Keywords: no keywords
wI'm using QuickTime Pro to play movies on my XP computer. The monitor turns off after 10 minutes, and QT being in use seems to not stopping it from triggering anymore. I like of course to leave this Power setting on the way it has always operated. I just don't know what keeps the system awake. I thought it might be something running silently in the task bar, like Skype or MSN or utorrent, any one thing that keeps it from triggering. But it's turning off now and nothing's changed that I can think of. Ideas what I can run, or a setting hidden inside QT, that doesn't disrupt my hour-movies?
I need ideas. This wasn't a problem before. It's just suddenly started turning off monitor mid-video. How very disruptive to entertainment.

retrieve deletion?
Date: 12/19/06
Keywords: software
A week ago a friend deleted his Outlook emails. It appears to be a misunderstanding of what the repair tool or reinstaller was supposed to do. What fancy abilities exist these days to retrieve deleted information? So far I told him to stop using his computer and keep it turned off. Take it to a high end professional to get back his email worth a hundred dollars of information to him. The idea is to preserve the harddrive in it's current state. When it's off there's still a chance to retrieve old data. As I understand it, it's not really deleted, just marked for future harddrive use to write over those areas.
Really my ideal solution would be any software that simply browses this kind of data. But I'm trying to help him and know nothing in this field. Please advise.

MSN Messenger displays annoying dancing h
Date: 12/14/06
Keywords: google
A friend's MSN Messenger always displays a dancing H when she type's any "h". The dancing gif is huge and very annoying. Between the two of us we don't know how to disable it. It happens to messages she sends me, but not to others. It appears the instant she presses h. It happens with no other characters. Her cousin set it, of course said cousin is unavailable to reset it. I don't know what this feature is called so I don't know what to type in Google to figure out how to disable it. Or if you can tell me how to disable it, that would be awesome too.

Video File Catalogue Software
Date: 11/20/06
Keywords: software
Hi folks,
Further to my previous post about finding a program that'll list and allow printouts of files, I thought I'd try a different tack.
Anyone know of some software that will catalogue video files on a PC? It can catalogue other files as well, but I'm only interested in video files, primarily AVIs (yes, this is for Windows).
Ideally the software will be able to search for files and update, as well as have a catalogue that is very quick to search. Cathy is one example, but it's behaving strangely (not finding certain files), I can't seem to force it to just AVI files, and the UI is less than brilliant.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

CPU Stress

Hi folks,
What do you use for CPU burn-in tests?
I'm aware of Prime95 and Hot CPU Tester, but is there anything better?
A friend demonstrated a programme called CPU Stress that seemed basic, but perfectly suitable. Although I can't find this anywhere.
Thanks

Nero 7 vs. Older Versions
Date: 08/13/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi folks,
Just curious if anyone's tried Nero 7?
If so, is it any better than Nero 5 or 6? I remember being a bit disappointed than Nero 6's interface seemed worse than 5's, and there was virtually nothing in the way of new features.
Thanks

Photo Assembly Software
Date: 08/05/06
Keywords: software
Hi folks,
I'm looking for some software to make light work of assembling various photos to print on an A4 sheet. Some of the photos may overlap, and I'm not worried about borders on the photos. Similar to those photo montages you can assemble manually in a clip frame. Of course I can do this in things like PaintShopPro and Photoshop, but as far as I'm aware this'll be a little more difficult in terms of the required editing and page sizing.
HP printers had some software that did something like this, but the photos would have large borders so isn't quite suitable.
Any recommendations?

New Programmer Policy
Date: 04/17/06
Keywords: programming
A friend of mine told me about this company policy when hiring computer programmers right out of college - especially for those with no programming experience on their resumes.
"For the first year here, you have to maintain somebody else's code."
"For the second year here, you may write new code, but you have to maintain your own code."
The purpose for the policy was "New programmers need to demonstrate they can maintain existing code before they may write new code, and must demonstrate they can write maintainable code before they can expect somebody else to maintain their code."
Just thought I would share.

Best Windows Freeware?
Date: 04/01/06
Keywords: software, virus, spyware
I'm selling a bunch of used windows machines, and want to put a decent software load on them, at a minimum so that I am not helping to increase the number of zombies out there. The machines will have XP Pro on them.
Here is what I have so far:
Mozilla suite (Firefox, Thunderbird)
winamp
irfanview
what for anti virus, spyware, etc?
Open Office
Anything else?
Games?
Machines are pokey (266mhz PII), 10+GB disk, but have plenty of ram - 384MB.
