1. Serious lagging issues

Date: 05/30/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: rss, software, html, java, security, virus, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft

This may be a basic problem, but it's an extremely frustrating one.

There are times using my computer when it is just extremely lag-gy. One of the primary times is when I come back to it and wake it from the screen saver. Let me give you an example of a usual situation, as it happened just now.

I came in to the computer room to look up something on the computer. It came out of the screen saver, and was sitting on a FireFox screen. I went to file and New Window, and it took THIRTY-FIVE SECONDS to open a new FireFox window. Once it dragged itself through all that it's fine, but that's a terribly annoying problem to have.

Heh, I just went to the search function to find Hijack This, and it took 17 seconds for the Search window to come up! It hasn't always been this way, things used to pop right up! Now, I know that a reformat would probably fix it all but...wow that can be a headache. Could it be anything else?

I am running a Compaq Presario with a 3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor and Windows XP. 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

My computer is incredibly infected with viruses and spyware. The only way I can get it to run without shutting down is running it in Safe Mode. I scan my computer with Norton Antivirus, Spybot, and Adaware in Safe Mode and it says my computer is not infected. Is there any way I can completely clean out my computer?

  4. Remote desktop connection failure

Date: 06/07/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: virus, spyware

I have a client that has dell p4 Windows XP SP2 server on a static DSL IP that they remote access using windows remote desktop from home on their Sony VAIO Intel Centrino Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and time warner cable high speed. IT has worked for 2 years and it quit working monday. Here is the problem they can no longer remotely access the server from home it will work for any other connection including a twc one but not from home. At home they can remote to test servers I setup at alternate ip addresses  but not to test servers at the work ip or even the work server.

    Things I have tried:
    1. reset of all equipment on both ends
    2. Verification of the correct configurations on the routers
    3. Checked the MTU settings on both routers 1492
    4. Turned off themes and bitmap caching in remote desktop
    5. changed the screen resolution to be 800x600 at 256 bit color on the laptop and in remotoe desktop and made the remote server match
    6. turnned of the firewalls on the dell and disable norton 2006 on the laptop and all of its features. nothing.
    7. DId the obligatory scans for spyware and viruses using hitman pro for spyware and running all of those tools in paid mode. Scaned for Viruses with AVG, Avast and Antivir
    8. checked on MS technet they said I needed to upgrade to the newest version of terminal services. I did it did not help.
    9. I changed the MTU on both sides to 1492 since that is the suggest from SBC for PPOE dsl connection prior it was 1500 in both locations
    10. I installed tightvnc and they still cannot get home access for the computer it will connect, prompt for a password and freeze after 1/2 of the screen is loaded and die which is better than remote desktop that wont even load the screen

::EDIT:: I just tried putting the server in the dmz on the router still no good. I genuinely believe it has something to do with somehting one of the isp's has changed. Nothing new has been installed on the computers in ages other than windows updates.

I found this article and I have a almost the same problem but I cannot get his results
    Remote Desktop
    http://www.quest4.org/etc/rda-blackscreen(no_login).htm

I just don't know what else to do I am working the search engines and not really finding much helpful

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated its killing me here

  5. Security Software Questions

Date: 07/08/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: security, virus, antivirus, spyware, google

I recently downloaded BitTorrent to try my hand at torrents. I ended up getting the very first thing I wanted very quickly and was enthused. I tried for something else - got it, but couldn't get it to work on my computer, so I deleted it. Then the pop-ups started... Mostly in IE (which I haven't used since, oh, 2002, I use Firefox and rarely Opera) - a page saying I need, um, WinAntiSpyware 2006 or something similar (forgive me).

    Right now I have:

    • McAfee Security Center
    • Avast
    • Spyware Doctor (free version that came with the Google Pack)

Yesterday I ran Spyware Doctor and it came up with 300+ threats. McAfee Security Center came up with nothing. Avast found a trojan. Spyware Doctor did it's thing and said that it got rid of all 300+ threats. This morning I came back to my computer and SD (it's scheduled to run every Sunday at 9am for a full scan) says there was 145+ threats. How? What? Why me??!

So, I mosied over to download.com and started browsing. I downloaded:
    • Spybot Search & Destroy (something I had used years ago)
    • Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal (which had good enough reviews)
    • Ad-Aware 2007

I also have these programs bookmared:
    • Spy Catcher Express 2007
    • Avira AntiVir Personal Edition
    • Zone Alarm 7.0
    • AVG AntiVirus Free Edition

Should I download them, too? Replace any of these for something I have now? Get rid of something I have now? Find something different altogether?

I've been "using the Internet" since 1999-ish and I never had any issues (be it viruses, spyware, adware, etc.) with any of my computers (including the computer at my parents house, the one I'm using now will be the fourth computer I've had). I always had either no protection at all or just basic Norton, McAfee, or whatever came from our ISP. So now I'm all paranoid that my computer is going to end up being a paper weight. I've deleted BitTorrent and Limewire. All the .mp3, .avi, etc files that I've downloaded over the past few weeks have been scanned repeatedly over the past few days. I have no clue how I got any of this stuff - literally only check GMail, LiveJournal, & MySpace and use AIM to chat. Up until the recent torrent download, I was downloading everything from LJ users via sites like SendSpace, MegaUpload, MediaFire, etc. and they all say that those files have been scanned. So I'm assuming that whatever I got had to be from the torrents. But I really don't know.

Sorry for rambling... and sorry for lack of links. I don't know how these things are passed and I was reading something about someone posting to a forum and their links were being altered.

  9. blue screen of death x.x

Date: 08/01/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware

i posted here awhile back about my notebook, and have problems with that and my router. well the problem was'nt solved, so i figured i would just update on that first. my laptop is actually in a worse condition now.. through no fault of my own of course, and is just being used as an extra server. thank the summer storms and a leaky roof for that one.

anyway, my problem now is about another machine. this is an old pentium3 compaq pc. it's not mine but one of my roomates, and even though i don't use it i'm being blamed for the problem. how fun! so here it is.when i kept hearing screaming and yelling i went into the other computer room, being asked why "I" had been installing programs on it. i was told which ones they were, and found the idiot owner screwing with BIOS, trying to fix the problem even though she has no idea what she's doing. when i got on to help, all it was doing was restarting, giving the option to start in safe or normal mode, then when you start it back up the windows logo comes on, and then this horrible blue screen. it's a full screen with a few paragraphs of text at the top, and then more text at the bottom. this happens for only half-a second before it restarts and it goes on for days.

now, all i could think of doing is reformatting windows. which i've done multiple times already on this machine, because the idiot likes to download viruses and spyware. i can get windows to start to install, it goes all the way to 34 minutes, before the devices are installed the machine cuts off, and then restarts. once again on a continous loop. so that's where i'm at right now. i'm hoping this is a very common problem with a somewhat simple fix. i'd rather not ave to go out and buy a new harddrive for this pc, especially since my pc is still dead, and i'm out a notebook of my own as well.

any help with this would be awesome right now, thanks in advance.

  10. Red Alert: Urgent assistance required!

Urgent help needed combatting spyware/virii that keep opening/redirecting fucking Microsoft I.E to spy-shredder.com and "ultimate defender" websites, along with pop-up boxes and replaced wallpaper that seems to be active as an Internet page picture.

ANY help is welcome! Be it known programs that can kill this to how to kill it manually in regedit!

Symantec and Ad aware have NO idea what it is, but it keeps multiplying at an annoying rate, OFTEN.

I swear, last time I let anyone on my PC ever again...

Something calling itself WinAntiSpyware2006 installed itself on our computer, claimed it had found two examples of spyware in our computer, and offered to save us for a price. I went into Control Panel and told it to uninstall the software, but now we have unsolicited pop-up ads in our computer.

Hello. I have a Windows XP Professional system that is FUBAR.

    * When I try to launch a shortcut from the desktop, start menu, or control panel, I get the following error:
"WINDOWS CANNOT ACCESS THE SPECIFIED DEVICE, PATH, OR FILE. YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE APPORPRIATE PERMISSIONS TO ACCESS THE ITEM."

    * I can not launch regedit, and I get the same error
    * I can not install applications, even as Administrator. (I tried installing AdAware 2007).

    * I can navigate the hard drive and some things open, some things do not.
    * I checked the Sharing & Security tab and set the EVERYONE account to FULL ACCESS
    * I checked the Local Security Policy for anything that prevents me from installing applications, but I can't seem to find this setting.
    * The computer is "protected" with TrendMicro PC-Cillin 2007 and nothing was detected as far as virus/spyware.

    THANKS for any help.

  13. Video lag

Date: 08/28/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware

I have been consistently experiencing video lag. It only happens while online (e.g. watching movies on netflix, playing computer games on a network), and only the video lags - the sound is fine. When I check, I find that my CPU is running at 100% during these lags. This never happens when running other programs. What could be causing the lag, and what can I do about it?

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m running Windows XP. I have a 1.6 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 52 G hard drive, mobility radeon 9000. I have run speed tests and consistently get a download speed around 1.3-1.5 Mbps and an upload speed of 350-400 kbps. I don't need to defrag. I have checked for viruses/spyware, so that isn't the problem. I can get you any other info that might be helpful. (At first I thought it was the RAM, but I play games with my brother who has an older computer and less RAM and still has no lag problems ...)

  14. installing english windows on a non-english laptop...

Date: 09/13/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: spyware

I've got a friend who desperately needs Windows XP reinstalled. Her machine is infested with spyware, and I don't think that running Windows Defender and Ad-Aware is going to cut it. However, she is from Korea and her laptop was purchased in Korea (and has a Korean QWERTY keyboard).

If she buys a copy of Windows XP English, can I still set it up to use the Korean language for the interface and, more importantly, the keyboard? Or am I hosed and need her to buy a copy of Windows XP Korean off the 'net so that everything works correctly?

    Thanks!

  15. My usual blond questions

Date: 09/22/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, spyware

Bought a desktop from a friend who reformatted the computer. Uuuuunfortunately he did so with a windows disc he'd already used once before (I'm completely technically illiterate so if I use a completely wrong phrase feel free to laugh) So the thing works pretty well and I haven't had any issues with the antivirus freewares he installed. But recently the computer froze and I had to restart it, and since then when I go to listen to something it tells me there's an audio error. My speakers are plugged in and in working condition. They worked before the crash! So anyone know what to do?

Also, on my shitty laptop I'm having TONS of problem with the internet. I use Firefox but still occasionally when I click on something it makes it open in IE. Well, now the stupid "This window requires you to be online blah blah connect or work offline" box pops up and doesn't take no for an answer! I'm almost ALWAYS on the internet, but it insists on asking me to connect to the old dial up my father had 3 years ago when it was his. And now I'm having pop-up upon pop-up (tongue twister) randomly... um... popping up... with IE whether or not I'm using it. My pop-up blocker is on so I'm assuming this is spyware or something... Also, my computer is having an awful lot of "fatal errors."

And problem 3, my laptop is RIDICULOUSLY slow, and my desktop is always on the internet. So I keep my music on the desktop and decided to delete it off of my laptop so I could connect my Iphone to the faster computer. Well, go figure, I get a pop-up on my desktop when I connect it saying I need Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher. How do I get this, or is there a way around it?

  19. Stuff working in safe mde, not in normal.

Date: 10/23/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, browser, java, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google

I keep having bizarre computer problems, yet I can't detect any viruses, and the only spyware I had was a couple tracking cookies I get from time to time and I deleted them.

Earlier Word wouldn't open, now it will. Sometimes Spybot and Ad-aware will open, sometimes not. Semagic won't open, I get an error message that says "Can't enumerate device." I've gotten the same error when trying to open Word, but now it works.

And sometimes the things that won't open give me an error message that there is not enough memory to run it, even though I have plenty and recently defragged.

I started my computer in safe mode and everything was peachy. I opened Fix-it Utilities, ran some scans and a registry de-frag, as well as running ad-aware and spybot again. All clean. Restarted the computer in normal and tried to open Fix-it, just to test. Still doesn't work. Neither does Semagic and a couple other random things. And randomly, my internet browser fails. Weather I'm in Opera, IE, or Firefox...they all do it. Half the text and images vanish, some look like they are on top of each other. I don't understand.

I'm pretty sure it must be one thing causing all of this, because it all started two days ago together.

    Any ideas?

This is on an HP PC with Windows XP by the way.

  20. How do I reformat an internal extra hard storage drive?

Date: 10/30/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: spyware

I have something on the drive, I don't know what it is. It can not be deleted, so I want to wipe the storage drive clean, but I can't use the windows vista disc, because windows is not on that drive. Or maybe I can? I have someone who was helping me set it up, and now I can't reach him for help. I saw a program for like 45 bucks, but it should not take a program to reformat a drive. Thanks you in advance for any help. I am thinking this program, I can't delete in the folder I can't delete must be spyware.
