  2. Internet Connection Problem

Date: 11/10/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, web, spyware, google

    (x-posted to computerhelp)

After moving and switching DSL plans, I've started to have some trouble with my internet connection. Some websites, such as google and LJ, will load fine. But others, like Wikipedia, won't load at all. The status bar will say 'Waiting for (website)...' but then it just doesn't load. Yesterday it said 'Website found, waiting for reply...'. Everything was fine on the 2nd before I moved, but it's been like this since I set everything back up on the 8th. I'm running Windows Vista with IE7, but I'm having the same problem with Firefox and Opera. I contacted my ISP and they said my connection was fine; they told me to call my computer manufacturer. So I called them and they told me to do a System Recovery. I'd rather not do that if there are other things to try, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

Could the problem be the fact that I changed service plans? My ISP didn't say anything, although I'm pretty sure the tech. I talked to didn't know much about computers other than how to read a troubleshooting manual. Same with the computer manufacturer tech.

Things that have already been suggested:
    Delete Temporary files/cookies
    Delete Temporary Internet Files folder
    Check for viruses/spyware/adware
Try logging on on a different account
Resetting IE back to default settings
    Disable Firewalls/anti-virus programs

    Anybody have any ideas?

  3. reformat?

Date: 12/01/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware

I am wanting to reformat my computer, but i have a bunch of questions I wanna ask before I go and end up screwing my computer up, lol.

    1) So when I reformat it, it deletes everything that I have installed on there, correct? It wont delete the pre-installed programs that came with my computer when i bought it about a year ago?

    2) My computer should have came with a windows disk, right? I have a dell inspiron b130. I bought it in september of 2006.

    3) Once i reformat it, it'll run just as fast as it used to when i bought it, right? I scan my computer on atleast a weekly basis for spyware and virus' as well as defragment it. So I dont think thats why its been a slower lately.

  4. Buffer overflow?

Date: 12/09/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, virus, spyware

I use McAfee and lately I have been getting this notice a LOT. I tried running a scan for virus and spyware. (came up clean) I also deleted my temp net files. It seems to pop up randomly. I'm not even connected to the net or have any programs running when it comes up sometimes. Can anyone tell me what is causing this and how I can stop/fix it? I know what a buffer overflow is (when a program writes information a buffer other than the memory space allocated for it) but I don't know why it is happening or how to fix it.

I have a dell dimension and using windows XP. I use firefox usually but still have IE has the default browser.

    Thank you in advance!

  6. Messenger issues

Date: 12/22/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, spyware, yahoo

Hello dear community who has helped me out a lot by now.

I've great issues with web messengers like MSn, Yahoo-Messenger and the newer versions of AIM.
They all refuse to connect (basically right away as if they were blocked), only an older version of AIM can connect, the newer verions which are available for download everywhere aren't working.

I'm using the Windows firewall on Windows XP and suspected it to be the one at fault first but I checked it and appearently that is not the problem here as I've put the msn and aim exes on the list to be not blocked, still not working.

Before I've been running out of my Norton trial I've been using their firewall and the newer AIm version which refuses to work now worked perfectly fine then (this is why I assumed Windows firewall right away)

I'm also using AVG antivirus (though not the firewall because it's not part of the free version appearently?) and Spyware doctor, if this has any revelance to what's happening here.

    How can this be fixed?

  7. Reason number 3485 why parents shouldn't be allowed to have a computer...

Date: 12/24/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: security, virus, spyware

Usually I can take care of nasty spyware thingers on my own, but this one has got me stumped.

My mom's machine runs XP, upgraded from ME [go ahead and cringe, i do it too].

She emailed me in a panic a few days ago, saying I broke her computer [bullshit], because this "internet speed monitor" thing keeps popping up.

Unfortunately, my mom doesn't know the wonders of Firefox, so she uses IE. I'm pretty certain IE is to blame, so I reinstalled Firefox [after she had uninstalled it].

She's run the CA security system scan that came with our Roadrunner broadband. It's caught quite a few things, Internet Speed Monitor being one of them.

However, when I used Firefox to try and download AVG-free and Ad-Aware, it wouldn't let me. It downloaded as some insane file extension that I don't even think exists. It's labeled as an "EFW file".

While waiting for the virus scan to finish, I checked my facebook [lolz], and this was in the place where an ad should have been:

    "Removed by HIPS FW"

So now what? The virus scan is still running, and I don't have another way to get decent anti-shit programs onto this machine right now.

Suggestions? Do we just trash it? Reformat is the last thing I want to have to do, as all my mom's college coursework is on the harddrive...but I'm afraid that if I back it up on a CD, I may reinfect the fresh install.

Help? Please and thank you. :)

  8. As always, my stupid questions

    1. I bought a desktop from an old friend who failed to tell me until after I purchased it that he installed windows XP with his old software, meaning I couldn't install service packs. What a friend right? Anyways, how do I go about making this a legit copy, and will it delete everything I have on my computer currently?

    2. Randomly the other day my computer started getting heinous internet explorer popups. I never even use IE! I tried going to add/remove programs to delete IE but it isn't listed. I think it started after the boyfriend installed some torrent downloading thing and put some music on the computer. Could it go away if I simply delete the software and the songs he downloaded, or has it embedded itself deeper in my files? I'm running Spybot and it finds and removes about 10 files every startup, but it can't delete one file called something like Virtuco....somethingsomethingsomething. What other spyware adware virus programs should I try?

And again, I apologize for the absolutely retarted questions =P

Ok. Let's say that you suddenly are imed by Spyware Doctor saying that it blocked a malicious entity thru a certain path. Let's also speculate that you didn't catch the path name in order to investigate any corruptions. Is there a way that you can get Spyware Doctor to repeat that path for you?

  11. BAsfIpM.exe hangs up my shutdown

Date: 02/24/08 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: asp, virus, spyware

Recently, a file called BAsfIpM.exe has been starting up on my Dell Latitude D600 (running XP). When I try to shut down, this file hangs up the shutdown (or hibernation). I know it's that one, because if I close it via the task manager, shut down goes smoothly. A search shows that it's a 72KB file located in two places: c:\I386, and c:\windows\system32. I've searched for information about this file and I find totally contradictory information, from "Wipe it" to "It's critical to have it!" In response to the theory that it's spyware or a virus, I've run AVG and Kaspersky Virus checkers and a couple of spyware checkers, but nothing comes up. Any ideas? How can I get my laptop back to just shutting down properly? Thanks!

  12. can't upload anything anywhere

Date: 03/21/08 (Computer Help)    Keywords: spyware

I am new, and am not geek smart. Sure I know somethings about the computer, but I do not have geek skills. (I mean that term in the nicest way possible!!!! computer techies are love, because they fix our problems ;)) Anyway, about my problem...I used to be able to upload anything anywhere, but I can't! I can't upload music, I also cannot attach picture files in email!!!! This is really driving me bonkers, and I don't know what's causing it. I had taken my laptop to our computer friend who fixed my desktop back in the day, and he just got rid of spyware, he didn't fix my problem!!!! I am not about to have my laptop taken away again. My laptop came with Windows Vista, and I do not have a copy and cannot re add it again. I also can't afford it at the moment. I have a HP Pavilion Laptop if that helps. I don't know the model number so don't ask. I hope one of you lovely techies can help my problem. Please and thank you. I await your suggestions.

  15. "System" process

Date: 03/14/09 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware

My workplace has recently had an outbreak of the conficker virus and i've been kinda paranoid about my computer at home. I noticed today a process called "System" with PID 4 that is running at 62,936 K and staying there that I hadn't noticed before. I don't know if I didn't notice it and I'm just being overly paranoid or if it wasn't there. It has no "User Name" associated with it and it only uses 152 K of virtual memory.

I recently scanned with Malwarebytes Antimalware in both regular and safe modes as well as AVG in safe mode and Spyware Doctor in regular. They only came up with a few weird things that I wasn't familiar with but didn't seem all that bad.

I am preparing to just switch over to Ubuntu but I have about 3 years with this computer and I am kinda attached to it.

Using Windows XP Home SP3 by the way.

    Thanks!
