for some reason my keyboard won't work on my computer. the weird thing is, the buttons at the top like the internet buttons, sleep button, cd/dvd/mp3 DO. it's just all the letter/number keys. when i go to keyboard under my control panel and look under hardware, it's blank!?
ALSO there's nothing wrong with the keyboard itself. when i take my sister's keyboard and plug it into my computer it's still the same.
i don't know if i have some kind of virus or..???
i really appreciate any help you can offer me!!

Help needed with Internet registration pages
Date: 01/29/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, web, yahoo
Hello, everyone. I've come to this communtity a few times before, and it's usually been helpful, so here I am.
My family owns a Dell Dimension 8400 PC w/ Windows XP. Although my family has had a bad history with virus trouble, the Internet has been working pretty well since we got it. Recently, however, there has been a bit of an issue when it comes to singing up for things via Internet. An example: I try to sign into my email account at Yahoo, and it comes up with a "The page cannot be displayed" screen. My sister tried to download a job application: same screen. My mom tried to order a bunch of stuff from a website: same screen. I tried to register for the ACT: same screen. Anytime anyone tries to register or sign up for something; when you click the actual button, that screen comes up.
This is a huge problem, considering the amount of items my family orders online. Since I'm also going to be applying for colleges soon, I need a reliable Internet that I'm sure will get my information through. It's very nerveracking. I don't know what to do. So if anyone has any idea what this is all about and how to fix it, I would be very thankful.

Windows Explorer
Date: 02/03/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, spyware
I bought an Acer laptop in December last year and only three days ago I managed to connect to the internet. Shortly after running some windows updates my computer's battery died and hibernated while still connected to the internet. I didn't think anything of it at the time but after it had been on charge and not re-connected to the net I found that some of my picture folders weren't opening or showing up altered. I have a huge picture collection but only keep 100 pics in each folder. I went into one folder and the computer took its time like it was loading a huge file and then a pop-up came up saying "Windows Explorer has experienced and error and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience," I close out of that but often have to open the task manager to close it down and it says it isn't responding. This has also happened with another folder but I deleted that folder and other folders take forever to open whilst on any view (normally thumbnail) and the icons on thumbnail view are tiny. My main questions I guess are... Do I need to delete these folders and the pictures in them to stop this? Is there any way to fix this problem?
Thank in advance.
P.S I have run total virus scans and spyware scans with nothing reported.

i feel like my computer is dying
Date: 02/09/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, spyware
i have been having problems with my computer for a few weeks. It started out by me just assuming i had been infected by a virus. i have 3 hard drives (2 maxtor 200gb and one Wetern Digital 160gb) and was assured that reformatting my c drive would not effect my other hard drives. Of course i attempted to virus scan it and search for any spyware and nothing really showed up. the drive was constantly freezing up and taking a very long time to open folders, as well as not allowing me to move files from it to other drives. i ran this error checking program that is located under the drive's properties under the tab Tools, rebooted, and this found multiple bad sectors and attempted to fix them with no real improvement in performance.
so i reformatted,. when it was done reformatting the screen that i had seen during the disk error check came back up (during a reboot) and it started to recover orphaned files that appeared to be all the files from my other 2 drives.
so began the insanity. my 2nd hard drive is all avi files and mp3s files. i first noticed folders missing. then when i would try to view some of these files instead of an avi file playing an mp3 would play, sometimes it would be a mesh of many mp3s that would play and other times it would be a completely different avi file that would skip along and barely play. then in the mp3 files i would click on an mp3 by a certian band yet a completely different song would play and even then it was an odd part of a song, not the entire thing. the more i look the more i find this happening in this drive.
in the 3rd hard drive after the formatting some of the files because incomplete all these files were rar, par2, iso, and vob files, there was such a high volume of these that i am not exactly sure how many if any completely disappeared. and in reality i wasn't really concerned with losing the data from this drive.
even now when i have to reboot, sometimes it just automattically enters into checking my drives for disk errors and it will tell me its recovering orphaned files and it will continue to find bad sectors on all my drives and tell me its fixing them.
lately (the past few days) opening up a folder with avi files dramatically slows my compter down, it takes forever to read just the details of the files, it takes even longer for me to get one of the files to play. Also when i try to play it and freezes it up the window will shut down and my taskbar will dissapear until i open my dvd drive and then the task bar comes back.
so with my limited computer knowledge i assumed that maybe the drive was going bad. i dled a program that will check your hd and it said everything looked good (i tried to dl the maxtor program to do this, but it required that you have a drive - and i don't). so i decided that i would reformat my other 2 drives, i moved all the files from my 2nd drive to the other 2, and during this my computer told me that there was a corrupt file on my 3rd drive located in the hidden recycler folder it starts out "S-1-5-21-then a long string of numbers" of course i can not delete this file. i continued to just move the files off my 2nd drive.
Now that there are no files on my 2nd drive, it still tells me that 20 gigs of that drive is being used, but i have no idea what it is being used by, i checked thru dos - nothing, i have hidden files showing - nothing. and now i afraid to reformat without first finding out what is taking up 20 gigs.
so is this a virus that has effected all of my drives? could this be caused by my drives perhaps overheating? could this be because i didn't set up my drives after reformatting with the Maxtor disc? my os is xp home with service pack 2. i use norton antivirus, and it updates automatically, for spyware i use ccleaner, adaware, and spybot s&d. I dl a lot of stuff, all the stuff i dl is rar and par2 files from usenet, or avi files thru bitttorrent. i don't have the slightly idea what is going on. besides updating and running my virus scan 10000s of times i have also run some online virus scans from symatec website, and bitdefender - nothing was found.

computer turns off while virus scanning.
Date: 02/12/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, spyware
Ok, so I got attacked by a bunch of nasty spyware/viruses today. They are all mostly gone due to using hijackthis, spybot, manual deletion, removing from msconfig startup, etc..
but, for some reason, my computer doesn't like me scanning for viruses. This even happened before I formatted (My computer was newly formatted a couple of days ago), and this still happens:
when scanning for viruses with avast! 4 home edition, the virus scanner scans for a while, then ABRUPTLY just shuts off the computer out of nowhere. I don't mean it shuts down, or restarts the computer, I mean it *completely shuts off*, like someone pulled the plug. Then I have to flip the switch on the surge protector (everything is plugged into that) and then turn it on again.
I thought running it under safe mode would prevent that from happpening, but nope.
I even assumed the computer itself was overheating, so I bought a new fan and installed it. The computer doesn't feel hot at all - it's cool.
So, how do I scan for viruses if my computer keeps shutting off? I even tried using an ONLINE virus scanner, and the same thing happened. Does anyone know why? I need to remove the remaining viruses ;_:

win32reg.exe problem

Yesterday, my roomy's 'puter kept freezing up. AVG found 2 viruses but it closed out and she didn't know what they were or where they went.
I attempted to run Ad-Aware but everytime it starts running, the computer restarts. So, I deleted all of the programs in the Control Panel that she didn't need, deleted the cookies, deleted all of the internet files she didn't need, restarted, and the computer seemed to work fine.
However, today she said "Win32reg.exe" keeps popping up a screen. I had already installed Google's Toolbar and so that is the same pop up blocker she uses. I ran Hijack This and got this:

Self-contained browser
Date: 02/20/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: browser, html, virus, web, spyware, linux
If you're a Windows or Linux user (the former especially), and you ever need to do a bit of surfing on a particularly shady website, and you want to protect your PC from any nasty spyware or other malicious code that might be present, the usual tactic is to rummage around for hardware, build a sacrificial system, install an operating system and applications, add it to your LAN, and get to the site in question.
Instead, try the VMware Browser Appliance. It's a self-contained copy of Firefox (running on Ubuntu Linux, but that's largely irrelevant -- Firefox is Firefox, from a user standpoint) that runs as "virtual machine" on your computer. When it runs, it runs inside its own window, not just on screen, but in memory, and the hard drive. It's completely boxed in: nothing you load can get to your other applications, or your hard drive, or onto your computer in any way other than inside that pre-defined box. It makes a great environment for testing website design, or testing a web application you're writing, or investigating a potential virus site, or anything else that you would be more comfortable not using your main PC for. You can configure it to either wipe itself completely clean every time you use it, or to retain the settings (bookmarks, cookies, etc) between uses.

I went to fix this lady's computer. She had a virus which I successfully removed it. Then she told me she needed her printer installed. She had just bought it and it never worked on her computer. It's a USB printer. I reinstalled it for her and attempted to print but to no avail. I thought maybe it was the printer and I had an extra USB printer in my car that I also tried to install but didnt work. I also tried to use my USB jump drive on her computer and it would work for a few seconds then die on me. In fact it kept giving me a weird I/O error message that I probably should have written down. ;p So now I'm thinking she has a problem with her USB ports. I installed the latest USB drivers for her and still to no avail. I even got out a new PCI USB card. That didn't work either. Her computer is an older machine running Windows 2000 that was upgraded from Windows ME. I totally gave up and told her if I found out how to fix it, I'd come back. I'm thinking maybe she has to upgrade her BIOS now or maybe there is some option in her bios. which I never done before in my life and wasn't about to do it for the first time on her computer. Any ideas?

question
Date: 02/28/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus
Hello, respected geeks. I have a question and I beg of you to offer some solutions, if you please...
My computer recently had a couple viruses and a few vulnerabilities, so I figured it could use a reformatting. I didn't like how it had been set up--although I did build it myself ('03), my guy friends took it upon themselves to upgrade it from 2kPro to XP Pro "for me" while I was studying freshman year of college. They loaded my OS onto this old 6GB hdd and utilized my 80GB to act as main storage. Of course, this was inconvenient, as I had to load all program files on the storage hdd. Well anyway, I purchased a 250 GB western digital hdd and an apparatus to turn it into a USB external, and backed up all my files I wanted to keep onto it. I then removed the 6GB, put the 80GB in its place as primary master IDE, and booted from the XP Pro CD.
I formatted. It started installing Windows. At 33 minutes remaining in setup, it froze--well, not froze completely, the little boxes in the bottom right corner were still blinking, and those stupid ads MS runs for its product toting how wonderful XP is kept blinking past, but...there was no progression in the installation. For Three. Hours. Finally, I came over and hit the space bar, then the enter button--and I got
The Blue Screen of Death.
I tried again. And again. And again. I had formatted, partitioned, reformatted, deleted partitions...all with the same result. Except that instead of freezing at 33 minutes, it would just go straight to the BSo'D. I tried a DFT--a drive fitness test...tried using a '98 boot desk, CHKDISK, SCANDISK, and FDISK. A fellow geek suggested maybe in my re-partitioning, a sector had just not completely un-partitioned, and therefore was a stuck...sector. Or something. Whatever, I figured this was not working right.
So I copied my backup onto this computer and tried taking the 250 GB out of the external USB apparatus and replace the 80 GB with it. Same result. So it's not my hard drive.
The BSo'D error says something about kernel...data...loss? something like that. It's in the middle of the "Installing Devices" process. It suggests turning off any caching or shadowing in my BIOS, but I don't see any options like that in my attempts to edit my BIOS. It also suggests trying to ensure that any hardware is installed correctly. Everything looks right--for god's sake, I built it. In BIOS it recognizes both sticks of 512MB, so I don't think anything's wrong with them. The only thing I've changed is which hdd is in there! :(
Please tell me you guys have some suggestions. I humbly beg for your advice.
Thanks in advance, Kitty <3

EDIT: Thank you all for your help! I unplugged the additional USB ports I had added, the zip, and the floppy. We're still in the middle of XP setup, but it got past the wicked 33 minute mark. Much obliged!!
