Scrollable text
Date: 03/26/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: css, html, web
Hi there!!
I'm building a website for a friend, and he wants the main text area to be scrollable, so that the page never has to scroll or change size. I'm using a combination of HTML tables and CSS, and would rather not use frames for this. Is there any way to set a box in a table to scroll? I've tried using the "overflow: auto;" option on my stylesheet, but that doesn't seem to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

community site setup- opinions?
Date: 03/27/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, programming, css, web
Hi everyone, I was wondering what the best way to go to set up a community site. I'm set to inherit a local music-scene related website, or 'portal', that used to have a 'blog' of sorts on the front page with announcements from the administrator(s), a bulletin board for discussion and promotion, and a photo gallery where anyone who wanted could easily upload and display pictures they took at events. The old site was phpNuke powered and got hacked, and the old admin also simply doesn't feel like dealing with the site anymore, so it's currently on hiatus.
I was thinking wordpress perhaps? They have a new bbPress thing (from the makers of wordpress, a bulletin board that's code-light, customizable and skinnable, and standards-compliant) but I don't know what to do about a collaborative photo gallery; I think they used the coppermine in conjunction with the phpNuke before; I would like to have it so they could log in to the site once and use any of the functions.
I'm researching different options, and I'm pretty handy with webmastering, css-based design and some minor php-programming/tweaking, so that's not a problem. I would just like opinions on the best methods or open-source/cheap web-community resources.

Simple Question
Date: 03/29/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
I wish I had some great terminology to throw at you guys so I sound like I know what I am talking about but I don't so I will try to make it sweet and simple.
Essentially I am trying to set up a webpage for a portfolio. I have knowledge of flash whatsoever besides how to open the program. How difficult would it be for a complete novice to download a web template and edit the images within flash? I am not changing any other elements besides simple text and images.
Please no flaming, I promise I will post elsewhere from now on ;)
Thanks guys for any help you could give!

Automatic Scrolling... to the bottom.
Date: 03/29/07
(Javascript Community) Keywords: php, java, web
Hey. I'm a noob with Javascript, and although it's next on my list (just completing PHP, so I could pass a few ideas on that if you need 'em), I really only need one thing at the moment.
I need a certain webpage of mine to automatically scroll to the bottom if there is a scrollbar. Essentially, the site is designed for people with larger monitors, and the top 100px or so is mainly decorative so in small resolutions its presence makes the bottom-navigation beyond the reach of the scroll.
If possible, I'd like for the scrollbar to disappear at this point
Any ideas? (or a .js I can simply include? :P)
Thanks!

Blogging and Web Hosting
Date: 03/29/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, hosting
Hello! I just had some questions about what web host to suggest for a couple of friends who would like to have a web site with political/science/gaming blogs for both of them to post in separately (they're taking two sides of a common issue). I'm trying to decide between WordPress or Movable Type (though I had my mind settled on WordPress) and am also seeing if anyone had any experience with the following hosting services:
Nearly Free Speech
RivalPro
Host Rocket
My friend has a domain name already, so he more or less needs a space for the actual content to go (the site has yet to be made at this point).
Thanks in advance!

Retouching on the redirect
Date: 03/30/07
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, browser, web
A few days ago I posted a question about browser redirection in php. The general consensus is that header() works best, and it works perfectly fine.
That's not where this question is heading.
As I stated in my previous post, this is a small project for my mother. She's now decided that instead of this field redirecting, she wants it to open a new window.
Now, if this was just a straight link on a generic web page, I wouldn't have a problem, but like I said in the afforementioned post, the page is selected based off of input from a form.
So my esteemed group of resident genius-people...is there a command that will create a new window?
:D

windows server based proxy for website filtering by AD users and blocking of IM

Does anyone have any recommendations for a corporate environment?
free is great, but paid is acceptable..
a) filtering by transparent proxy. only certain users have full access, some have restricted access to specific websites.
b) blocking of msn,yahoo, aol, skype etc (preferably also by specific users).

Installing PHP with gmp lib
Date: 03/31/07
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, web
Hello,
I'm currently attempting to install PHP on my webhost, to support my MediaWiki installation.
Installation script (it had a bunch of other libraries but I took them out as they didn't seem to be problematic, to try and isolate the problem):
#!/bin/sh
# Abort on any errors
set -e
# The domain in which to install the PHP CGI script.
export DOMAIN="mydomain"
# Where do you want all this stuff built? I'd recommend picking a local
# filesystem.
# ***Don't pick a directory that already exists!*** We clean up after
# ourselves at the end!
SRCDIR=${HOME}/source
# And where should it be installed?
INSTALLDIR=${HOME}/php5
# Set DISTDIR to somewhere persistent, if you plan to muck around with this
# script and run it several times!
DISTDIR=${HOME}/dist
# Pre-download clean up!!!!
rm -fr $SRCDIR $DISTDIR
# Update version information here.
PHP5="php-5.2.0"
GMP="gmp-4.2.1"
# What PHP features do you want enabled?
PHPFEATURES="--prefix=${INSTALLDIR} \

# ---- end of user-editable bits. Hopefully! ----
# Push the install dir's bin directory into the path
export PATH=${INSTALLDIR}/bin:$PATH

your best class?

hey everyone
i'm going to be teaching for the first time starting in may. it's a one month, university level CSS web development class. i'm trying to put together the syllabus right now and wanted to ask your opinions.
if you've ever taken a CSS/web design/development class, what did you like about it? what didn't you like? did the instructor do anything particularly remarkable?
if you've never taken a web dev class before, do you have any input from other classes you've taken? what works and what sucks?
thank you . . . xposted to graphicdesign

Basic Question on Logging
Date: 04/03/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
I think this is possibly the community to go for this question I'm not entirely sure
I want to make a website but I'd like to be able to get an idea of where the traffic is coming from
it's for a basic selling site and from the get go it would be nice to know who to cater to area wise and what not or if any specific additions should be added (languages, etc)
I'm fairly certain you can't tell exactly the person and that's fine, but is it possible to tell the state or country?
If so what type of criteria do I need to look for in a host to be able to find these facts, or is this just a general thing all hosts provide and me not having any web knowledge am completely ignorant about
Thanks for any help whatsoever
