  3. template blues

Date: 03/15/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, software, html, web, google

I need an easy method of adding template-like content such as headers into websites, with the following requirements: I want to be able to change the contents of the template and reapply it to all the pages which use it, and I DO NOT want to use anything that requires a script be run every time the page loads. That is to say, I'd like to be able to take care of this before I even upload the webpages and not rely on php includes and the like.

It would seem to me that this is something lots of people might want do do. Even if not fully automated it should make static html sites easier to maintain and dynamic websites more efficient, but I haven't had much luck finding any information, much less a development environment which would automate it. Plenty of stuff lets you apply a template, but I don't think any of what I've looked at lets one change the template and then reapply it.

Every google search I do looking for information on this dumps me at Smarty's doorstep, but if I'm reading their website properly, Smarty is a caching engine and something constantly running, which is close to the exact opposite of what I want. If I recall correctly, dreamweaver does something like what I'm looking for, but I don't really want to buy proprietary software, especially not when I'd mostly be paying for wysiwyg functionality I don't need or want.

Am I missing something very obvious (don't say frames, please), is this common and I'm not reading program helpfiles properly (doh), am I mistaken that anyone would want to do this, or what?

  4. Flash help: text being cut-off

    Date: 03/19/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I am new to Flash - took a class in it this quarter but things are still new and confusing...

I am making a quick placeholder flash intro for a website I'm building. It isn't permanent (so pardon the colors and the general lack of design), but I'm having the weirdest bug. My text gets cut off in odd places, but only when it's uploaded to a server. On my computer, viewed with the Flash player, as well as in Flash when I created the movie, it looks fine.

The file has been uploaded to: http://www.calpoly.edu/~tosborn/flash-intro.swf

I tried adding a different font but then it got the bottom half cut-off. I haven't recreated the file yet because I have no idea why this is happening and how I could avoid it the next time it occurs.

Can anyone help a flash newbie? Thanks!

  9. Freeware/Open-Source HTML editor?

Date: 03/20/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

I remember once using an HTML editor that had a very handy feature - it would automatically indent or outdent lines based on the HTML being used.

    For instance, if you typed

and hit the Enter key, it would auto-indent the next line. Then, when you were done typing a paragraph, went to the next line, and typed

, it would auto-outdent the line to be aligned with the opening paragraph tag.

I believe this same text editor I was using allowed collapsing and expanding blocks of code (e.g. everything between paragraph or DIV tags). I figured out that UltraEdit-32 v.11+ has this feature, but I can't find the auto indent/outdent feature anywhere.

I've looked at UltraEdit-32 v.10, CoffeeCup HTML Free, PSPad, NotePad++, EditPad Lite, TextPad, and even Dreamweaver MX 2004's code view (blech). I'm having no luck anywhere.

Does anyone here know what I'm talking about? Do you know of a text editor that has this feature? Am I just insane? Is my memory slipping?

Thanks in advance for the help!

  12. web design/developer certifications

Date: 03/21/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, technology, asp, web

I've been wondering about web-related technology certifications that might be worth my while. yes, I know experience is invaluable when it comes to enhancing a resume, but I also wouldn't mind having a solid certification in a web-related area. I'm not referring to web design degrees as I already have an associates degree (interactive multimedia) and I had been working towards a second web dev degree that may someday lead to a bachelors. so my questions on web certifications:

are there organizations/sites that are more highly regarded than others for what they have to offer?
    what are some good ones?
what are some reputable/credible web certifications out there that you have, or know of?

I've only done a brief search so far, but I have noticed the HTML certification that w3schools has to offer:
    http://www.w3schools.com/cert/cert_html.asp

    any thoughts on that one?

thanks in advance for any input, advice, comments, etc..

  16. Not able to initialize the script engine.

Date: 03/22/07 (SQL Server)    Keywords: sql, web

    SQL2K.

I'm trying to call a DTS package from a stored procedure. I get the following error:

Error string: ActiveX Scripting was not able to initialize the script execution engine.

The package runs correctly when I run it straight from Enterprise Manager.
I have reregistered the DLLs suggested in the solution at sqldts.com and get the same error.
I've pulled out all the variables and distilled the command to:

    EXEC master..xp_cmdshell 'DTSRun /S "EDISON" /U "sa" /P "--------" /N "VariablePassTest"

...and I still get the error.

(The package at present contains nothing but an activex script task whose only line of substance is a messagebox displaying the value of the passed variable.)

Anyone know of any alternative reasons why this error would appear? The Intarwebz are being somewhat unhelpful, as everything seems to point back to re-registering the DLLs. TIA.

Date: 03/22/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, web, google

Hi, I'm trying to add a dynamic timeline to my website temp location: http://members.shaw.ca/lord_breetai/sakura

Basically I'm looking for something that would automatically sort events based on time allow me to color code, and preferably put in graphics, and spit out html code.

Sure I could code something myself but it would be a pain to put events in sequence and such... and I'm just not that patient.

Since this is a timeline for a video game/animation series, events are subject to change as Sega deems fit and it would be too hard to keep up with a scratch built webpage. I've been trying to google something up, but havn't found anything good yet. If someone can help that would be great.

Money is a big issue here, so something open source or free would be good. Or something cheap, less then 100 USD.
