  2. Possibly Paranoid

Date: 07/26/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web, google

But I googled this for a bit and couldn't find more than a tangential answer from more than one, maybe two sites.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 from 2005. Due to various wear and tear and possibly the damn animals in the house (long story) my power adapter is starting to go. And due to sheer absentmindedness, I wouldn't mind having a spare around anyway.

The adapter I have says it's 65W, and it runs the computer fine. The Dell website and a couple other sites I visited will only sell a 90W adapter for an Inspiron 8600, which I'm afraid will blow out the laptop. And I'd really like not to blow out the laptop. It's a good laptop. It's served me well.

Is it going to blow out my laptop? Has anyone replaced their power adapter for this model with a 90W and had it work fine? Should I just get a 65W power adapter for a different model and don't worry, it'll work fine?

    Date: 07/27/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Hello, I'm fairly new to web design. I'm currently in the process of building my promotional website. I was just wondering...Would it be better for me to building separate pages for my portfolio items and use the swap image behavior, or create Iframes? Any pointers? Thank you!

  4. a poll. help?

Date: 07/27/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: java, web

i'm redesigning my portfolio site -- this includes print media, photography (scans of silver prints), web design, and some multimedia fun stuffs. i'm so tired of the same old notion of "click to see my work" with whatever obvious thumbnail navigation or cute artsy boxes or javascript pop-ups. i'm kinda stuck with the obvious navigation and having to click on things..

what are your likes/dislikes about others' portfolio sites? what about scrolling? an artist statement? too much/too little work? formal vs informal navigation?
(this is a poll, so duplicate suggestions are very welcome)

  5. How to find where this site is hosted at?

Date: 07/27/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

So I got a new client today who has no idea about their current website or has anyyyything except one password and the name of a domain registration company here in Australia.

Well the password did not fit the domain registration account but the support guy did give me the dns servers that it is pointing to..

now is there ANY way i can figure out who the host is by these name servers, any way i can look it up, or.. ahhh what in the world can I do??

The client has bought this business from somebody else and it took them a solicitor and two months just to get that password.. that i have no idea what it is for!!! so if i can figure this out without getting their lawyers involved it would be a good thing.

    Thanks in advance! :)

  6. Site testing?

Date: 07/27/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

I was wondering if you guys would be so kind as to proof a site for me. Everything on there should work - the only thing that doesn't is the Corepoint Associates site. (Turns out my client shut their doors & took their site down -- didn't know that until this morning. oops)

Anyway, if you guys have time & can just take a walk through, let me know what you think, all that good junk, I'd really appreciate it. If you decide to comment, please let me know what browser & OS you're using and what kind of internet connection you run on so that I know how I'm doing on my cross platform. (It's been short notice, so I'm totally not Mac tested. Screencap if I'm off on the Mac, I'll fix it as soon as I can.)

  9. Internet Pages Failing to Load

Date: 08/03/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

I've been having a strange problem the past few days.

I turn on my computer, click on Internet Explorer, my home page loads, I can do everything I usually do, open multiple pages, all works fine. I walk away to get lunch or whatever. When I come back no matter what I try to do - refresh a page, open a new website, click on something on a page that is up - I get the "cannot find server" or "page failed to load" error page. I hit refresh a few times, keep getting the error, then a minute or so later everything is back to normal and I can continue using all the pages that I had up.

So basically it's like for a minute or so after every time I come back from not using the computer the connection is stalled. I never have to restart or turn my modem on or off. It does come back on it's own.

Any idea what is causing this?

I'm running Windows XP, using a DSL connection, one computer only, using IE.

The only new thing I know has been installed is Sonic Wall Global VPN client but I'm not using that at all when this error is occurring. I still think maybe somehow this is causing it but I can't figure out how to go about checking that. I have Windows Task Manager up and Sonic Wall is not listed in the applications or processes, but it is listed on the networking tab.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
