1. How To Split Java String By Newlines

Date: 07/19/07 (Java Web)    Keywords: web

Splitting a String by newline is a common requirement. When processing textual data from files or from web we need to split the data by newline boundaries. The solution aren’t hard either. Let’s see a simple one liner solution using String.split(). String[] poList = pos.split("\r\n|\r|\n"); What did I do? I am splitting the String based on a regular [...]

There are 86 Google search results pages' worth of webpages mentioning variants...

...and 81 Google search results pages' worth of webpages discussing "varients", which apparently is not a word in the English language.

Date: 07/20/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

    Hello Friends

Has anyone here had any working experience developing using a PHP5 Web Framework? (Cake, Zend, symfony, etc.)

Do you have any advice based on practical experience regarding which frameworks I should consider evaluating and which ones I should avoid?

I will be building a simple web application that requires session-based user authentication and a fairly small and simple schema.

    Thank You!

  6. Transparency in IE

Date: 07/21/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hi all,

I recently added a background image to a client's website, and at the same time, I changed the backgrounds of some pictures (a banner, a line separating the links bar, a picture...) from white to transparent, so that the background would show through normally.

Bizarrely, when she looks at the site in IE, she says she sees gray boxes in place of the transparency. Site looks fine in any other browser--we've tested firefox and Safari thus far.

Anyone have a similar experience/know how to correct this?

If you could take a minute and view the site and let me know if the transparency is showing up properly for you (and what browser you're using), I'd appreciate it. www.juliamannes.com

  7. Flash Headache

Date: 07/22/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

I've lurked for a long time, and I was wondering if it's okay to ask some questions pertaining to building a web page in flash. I've never done anything with flash before, and I've been making my portfolio page in a class for it. I've been working my way through it and have come to a problem.

My problem is located on the page for "2d Art"
    http://www.ufotofu.net/test.html

Basically-- my goal is to have thumbnails which viewers can use to click on and display a sample of art. I have a few buttons out to test, and I made corresponding .jpg images that will load via the "Load Graphic behavior"

I have it set to load the image on release-- and it works, but then I'm left with a problem. Once it loads, it wont go away. If someone goes to load something, it wont go back to the other one when it's clicked.

Right now, only the first two thumbnails are set up. I didn't bother to do any more when I found this issue. They load once and I suppose it's something to do with layers.

But ultimately, I would like to be able to have someone click an image, have the page show the art, and then when a new one is clicked-- get rid of the previous one and load the new image.

Many thank yous in advance for your help!

  8. transparency woes

Date: 07/22/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

So, in light of this post: http://community.livejournal.com/webdesign/1286735.html I have a related question.

For the life of me, I can't get transparent gifs to work properly in html anymore. At all. I make an image in photoshop, make sure its transparent, save as a gif. Open the gif in photoshop and its transparent. When I place it into an HTML doc it gets a white background.

So eventually i said 'forget it" and switched to .png, which works. But now I realize that it doesn't work in IE6 and below...

What oh what is a girl to do?! How can I either a) make .gifs appear transparent again, or b) make my .pngs transparent in IE6 and below? Which is the easiest / best solution?

    Thanks!

  11. Mp3 Codec/Vista

Date: 07/23/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web, microsoft

Crossposted: My apologies to those who have to see me twice.

So I'm sitting here with a new computer (Vista from Dell) and a new phone (RAZR) and I wanted to create my own ring tone from some mp3s I have to put on my phone.

    Seems simple enough.

But I continue to get an error with this multimedia studio from Motorola when it comes to saving the file.

This is what I receive if I just try to transfer the file to the phone.
    ---------------------------
    Melody Studio
    ---------------------------
    Unsupported format
(mp3 codec may be inappropriate or missing)
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

This is what I receive if I try to save the file to my HD.

    ---------------------------
    Melody Studio
    ---------------------------
    Failed to create file
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

So, it seems that there's not an mp3 encoder installed, which is also what Motorola's website states for this particular error.

But how the heck do I get it loaded?

I'm normally very handy on computers but for the life of me I can't figure out where to get one nor how to make it work.  I attempted to download Audacity and LAME a few months ago when I went through all this but I couldn't seem to get that to do what I wanted.  I've searched Microsoft and can't seem to find a way to do this through them.  So, here I am.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I know I can shut off the feature where all email going to djmattb241.com goes to me, but that's not really solving the problem.

  15. questions

Date: 07/24/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, web

Hi all, I'm working on a website for a freelance client and have run dinto a couple of snags. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than I can help:

    1. Is there a way to target a link to open in a new tab of a browser, instead of in a separate window?

    2. Is there an easy way to indent something? The tab key isn't working for this, and I could insert nonbreaking spaces, but it makes the code kind of sloppy in terms of having someone else update the content. Is there a way to do this, either with or without CSS?

I'm using Dreamweaver MX2004 as well as doing some hand-editing of the code. The site will eventually be updated by someone else, so I'm trying to keep it fairly simple.
    Thanks!

  16. Assigning values to variables in SSIS

Date: 07/24/07 (SQL Server)    Keywords: sql, web, microsoft

Two questions in one week. Sheesh. I apologize in advance.

As someone on the MS forums said, assigning values to variables in SSIS is way harder than it needs to be. I've read about fifty webpages on this, and they all boil down to the same two basic solutions, and both give me the same errors. I've tried this two different ways:

    Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime
    Public Class ScriptMain
    	Public Sub Main()
            '
            Dim vars As Variables
            Dts.VariableDispenser.LockOneForWrite("intTYPeriodFrom", vars)
            vars(0).Value = CInt(Dts.Variables("intThisWeekSysno").Value) - 51
            vars.Unlock()
            Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
        End Sub

    ...and...

    Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime
    Public Class ScriptMain
    	Public Sub Main()
            WriteVariable("intTYPeriodFrom", CInt(Dts.Variables("intThisWeekSysno").Value) - 51)
            Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
        End Sub

Private Sub WriteVariable(ByVal varName As String, ByVal varValue As Integer)
            Try
                Dim vars As Variables
                Dts.VariableDispenser.LockForWrite(varName)
                Dts.VariableDispenser.GetVariables(vars)
                Try
                    vars(varName).Value = varValue
                Catch ex As Exception
                    Throw ex
                Finally
                    vars.Unlock()
                End Try
            Catch ex As Exception
                Throw ex
            End Try
        End Sub

...and get the same results with each. Those results:

if the read-only and read-write sections of the script task are blank, I get a "the element cannot be found in a collection" exception. If I add the variables to the script task r-o and r-w fields, I get deadlock. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? (I have found the Set Variable custom task, and I love it, but this code will be going on a production server owned by another company, so I can't install custom tasks to it.) Knowing me, it's something obvious.

    Grazie...

  17. Grr. Driver Issues

Date: 07/25/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

    OK, Here's the scoop.

One of my users had a computer. The PSU blew and took the MB with it (for whatever reason).
I do not have the parts kicking around to replace these so I went and grabbed the cheapest machine I could from the nearby Best Buy to get a machine back up and running as quickly as possible.

The problem is that the machine had Vista on it.
The user has applications that are needed that do not yet have Vista versions and the XP versions do not run right in Vista.

The machine I bought has XP drivers on the eMachines website, but they do not work.
Changing OSs is not supported by eMachines support. (why do they provide XP driers, expecially ones that do not work?)

I used the Belarc System Advisor to get the part number of the MB and then went to the manufacturer's website to see if they have XP drivers. They do not, Vista only.

The part number is mcp61pm2ma and it claims the manufacturer is Gateway.

Anyone know where I can get drivers for this board for XP?

  19. .htaccess

Date: 07/25/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser, html, web, hosting

So I recently changed the extensions of all of my web pages from HTML to PHP. This was good because I could finally do proper headers without the validator bugging out at me. Unfortunately, it also means I have twice the number of files in my directory - those with .html extensions and those with .php. The HTML files are needed to say "Oh yeah hey just change the extension of the page you're looking at to .php and you're good to go". The easy way to fix this, I thought, was to delete all of the HTML pages and set up a custom 404 page that could say the same thing with just one file, but as of yet it hasn't quite worked. I made a .htaccess file that says the following:

    ErrorDocument 404 404.html

With 404.html being the 404 page, obviously. I uploaded them both into my directory (I don't have my own domain; someone's hosting me but I kinda haven't talked to my hostess in a while) and the files are... well, there, but if I go to a made up address it just gives me the default 404 page. Anyone know what's wrong? I read somewhere that the permissions have to be set to 644, and I think they are - when I go to the chmod command after right clicking on a file I get rw-r--r-- (er sorry if my syntax is wrong, but yeah it's 644). However, if I click OK, WS_FTP gives me this error: 500 'SITE chmod 644 .htaccess': command not understood ! Chmod failed. It may not be supported on remote host.

I'm not really sure if that's relevant to anything, since it seems like it's 644 anyway, but... yeah. Also I'm not entirely sure if this is an error but if I type in the URL of the .htaccess file into the browser (http://www.example.com/directory/.htaccess) it says it can't find the file, even though I know it's there.

Sorry for the long post, but yeah hopefully someone can help me...?

  20. Sound problem

Date: 07/26/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web

Alright I will try not to be confusing..

I am having a HUGE problem with sound/video on my computer.
It skips & sounds distorted during windows startup and also during the first few seconds of playing a new song on itunes. Also sounds distorted when I get random sounds from IM's or websites.

On streaming video sites like youtube, the video will sometimes(almost all the time) run in slow motion as will the sound. If the sound is distorted, the video will run in slow motion. Sometimes the video will run fine but the sound will still skip.

Things that I have done to try to fix it:
-Going to gateway.com and downloading a sound driver update (didn't work)
-pushing ctrl, alt, delete to try and close down some processes after suggestion by geek squad member at Best Buy who told me that I should only have 30-40 processes working at one time. I had 43 but besides explorer, aim, and itunes, nothing else was taking up a lot of space.

It's a 2005 gateway laptop 6510gz but it has had to be sent away to the best buy service center for the following problems:
1st- had to have the power adapter replaced has it stopped powering my computer
2nd- had to replace the LCD monitor & also had the motherboard replaced
3rd- had to replace the LCD monitor once again and also had to replace the motherboard, once again
4th- had the fan, power adapter, and battery replaced
-I have an extended warranty but it will not cover software problems so I'm left to try and fix this sound problem by myself although it has been in ongoing problem for the last year. I do not remember if it happened all at once or if it was gradual.
