  3. Support Group

    Date: 05/11/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

    A group of friends and I have a support group online although it’s just a free forum at the moment. We want to switch it to a paid for site instead (we already have the money to do it). What are your suggestions on places to get a good forum/domain? For my personal website I use www.fatcow.com but I wasn’t sure if there was a better place or if there was something else we should do since we have such a large community to work with.

    Thanks!

  4. Link Help

    Date: 05/11/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

    OK, you know how sometimes images that are links get the box around them? How do you make it go away?

    My husband is helping to build this webpage, and we can't figure out why the buttons at the top have the link box around them, but the photo in the center of the page is also a link and doesn't have the box. We want all the boxes to go away. The only way I know how to do that would be to change the alink, vlink, and link colors to the same as the background color, but that would make any text links disappear too (I'm such an html cheater *laugh*). On this site, there are text links that need to be there.

    Just ignore the fact that the page is littered with random links to things: my husband makes links to the pages he's working on while they're still in progress. This page I linked to above isn't the real front page of the site, it's just a test page too. Once he can figure out the buttons thing, maybe he will make it the front page, but for now we're stuck.

    I think it's relatively simple, but I can't figure it out. (Oh and if you have any other suggestions for this page while you're looking at the buttons, feel free to share). Thanks in advance.

  5. lj-cut code..?

    Is there any way to do an lj-cut type link in a non-livejournal weblog? I know it uses a relative link (#something), but can you hide the text block and whatnot? I'd be interested to try something, if it's doable.

  6. Simple Javascript rollover effect... or is it?

    Date: 05/11/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, java, web

    Alright, Javascripters of the Web Design community. I'm very, very new to Javascript. So new, that I can't get a simple rollover effect to work. Here's the issue:

    I'm using validated XHTML Strict, which means there are no names, only id's. Firefox doesn't seem to have an issue with this and keeps chugging along without a fix. Internet Explorer doesn't do the rollover, but it also doesn't report an error. Here's my code:

    if (document.images)
    {
    	document.news = new Image(85,30);
    	document.site = new Image(85,30);
    	document.news.src = "images/news1.gif";
    	document.site.src = "images/site1.gif";
    }

    function focusOn(imgName) {
    	if (imgName=='news')
    	  document.news.src="images/news2.gif";
    	else if (imgName=='site')
    	  document.site.src="images/site2.gif";
    }

    function focusOff(imgName) {
    	if (imgName=='news')
    	  document.news.src="images/news1.gif";
    	else if (imgName=='site')
    	  document.site.src="images/site1.gif";
    }

    Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated, since I have to finish this stupid effect before I go on to more important jobs.

  7. Outlook 2000 and XP SP 2 Intranet Prompting

    Date: 05/11/05 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: security, web

    I have an Exchange 5.5 (Yes! We are upgrading within days) and Outlook 2000 environment at work.

    Recently a few users including myself upgraded to XP Sp2. Suddenly, we are being prompted for a domain login/pass when we open emails that contain images on the intranet webserver. Prior, it automatically authenticated. IE does not currently prompt (for most people). I made sure the Intranet server was added to the Intranet Sites in the IE Security tab.

    I've looked all around the web but can't even find anyone else that has this problem. Any of you have any insight?

  8. CD-ROM catalogue

    Date: 05/12/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, shopping

    Anyone in here ever made a CD-ROM catalogue? One of my client wanting to distribute CD-ROM catalogue. I don't think creating an offline version of the (shopping-cart) website will be suitable. I am thinking of creating it in excel. Any excel expert in here? How can you pull images to be displayed (say I have all images in a folder and if i type in imagename.jpg it can retrieve images mentioned). I don't even know if this can be done in excel. Otherwise, any other suggestion?

    Cheers

  9. Directory Image Retrieval via HTTP

    Date: 05/13/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

    I know there are applications to pull a site from the web without FTP (reads the HTML, and follows all image links and page links, and downloads them).  However, is there an app that allows one to download all the images in a directory?  For example, if I have a site such as : http://www.yourdomain.com/images , is there a script I can run to download all of the images in the directory?  Unfortunately, the server does not allow a directory listing so I can just view the listing and download them.

    Any thoughts?

  10. Windows Media Player

    Date: 05/13/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: web

    I'm hoping that someone can help with some issues I'm having with my Windows Media Player 9. A couple of days ago, my daughter (who downloads songs from AOL's search engine) informed me of an error message upon her starting Windows, something along the lines of "a file has corrupted the library. a new library will be formed." A day later, she finds she is unable to play the audio-visual song downloads on WMP9, getting the error message: "WMP is unable to access the file", linking her to the official error message (C00D11D2),

    Windows Media Player cannot access the file. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
    1. This file is currently in use. Close the file, and then try again.
    2. You do not have permission to access the server or other location where the file is stored. Verify that you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again.
    3. You do not have permission to access the proxy server. Verify that you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again.
    4. If you are trying to copy a track from a CD to your hard disk, you may not have permission to copy to the specified hard disk location. Verify that you have the appropriate access rights, and then try again. If the problem persists, try copying to another folder.

    To change the folder where tracks are copied to
    On the Tools menu, click Options.
    Click the Copy Music tab.
    Click the Change button.
    Select another folder in which to store your digital media files, and then click OK.
    –or-
    Click Make New Folder, enter the name of the new folder, and then click OK.

    (Permission for the server, access rights, proxy servers? I'm lost)

    In the end, WMP9 gave my step-daughter the option to upgrade to WMP10, which she did, but the problem continued. When she informed me of the problem, I did utilize the Add/Remove option to rollover from WMP10 back to WMP9, but still the problem persists. I am able to download and play Audio/Visual WMP files, but her purely audio WMP song files keep giving us the "WMP is unable to access the file" error message.

    Does anyone have a clue about how to go about rectifying this?

    I've been trolling websites with little success. I have a vague understanding of how computers work but have to admit I'm rather clueless when it comes to the intricacies.

    Any help would be much appreciated.

  13. Editing a live site

    Date: 05/14/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, web

    When some sites are undergoing maintainance a user may see an "under maintainance come back later" message when visiting the site. Most of the time they'll see this message no matter what part of the site they try to visit. I'm still very dinosaur when it comes to web design so I still write everything by hand and when I do have some php I need to work on I need to work on it live. Sometimes however I want to be able to work on the site or make updates without having people be able to interact with the site... I want to do this without renaming any files (esp. the index file), any directories, or moving anything around. How is it done?

  14. Taming list help

    Date: 05/14/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web

    I am attempting to put together the navigation bar in my portfolio website and I've run into a technical hitch. I'm using a list styled with CSS to remove the bullet points, put in backgrounds etc. It all works fine when I take out the bullets, padding and margins, but as soon as I try to style the links it all falls apart.

    /* List formatting */

    #nav {
    list-style: none;
    padding: 0;
    margin: 0;
    }

    #nav2 {
    list-style: none;
    padding: 0;
    margin: 0;
    }

    #nav2 li {
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    }

    /* Link formatting */

    #nav a {
    display: block;
    background: #FF99FF;
    }

    #nav2 a {
    display: block;
    background: #CCCCFF;
    }

    A really simple version of the HTML is here. I've put in some dreadful background colours to illustrate the problem. The ideas is to style the links as blocks, enabling me to put in backgrounds, padding etc. It all works in Firefox, but in IE it seems to add extra padding between the links. Taking out the display: block in the a immediately takes out the extra padding. Oddly, adding a border around the li takes out the padding, too. If only I wanted a border!

    I know that it's worked for me before, but I can't work out why it isn't working this time. I've compared the code to other websites that I've designed and it should work. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong before I start tearing my hair out? If it's an IE quirk, can anyone tell me why it's suddenly decided to bug me? Is there some declaration that I'm completely missing because I've been staring at it for so long?

  18. TB won't work with Lycos POP mail

    Date: 05/15/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web

    I've been using Thunderbird for more than a year now and have had *almost* no major problems with it. I've recently decided to use TB to check my Lycos account email.

    I've set up everything according to the mail.lycos.com website (it wasn't anything I couldn't figure out myself anyway) but when TB asks me for my lycos account password, nothing happens. Nothing at all. So when I click "GET MAIL" I get a message like "Sending of password did not succeed: Mail server mail.lycos.com did not respond".

    I checked the Lycos mail website for troubleshooting and found nothing useful. I don't know if the problem is with Thunderbird or with lycos. My password is definetly correct, I'm not typing it wrong or entering the wrong one. And I have a premium account with Lycos so I *am* allowed to use an email client with my lycos mail.

    Does anyone have any suggestions? How can I fix this problem?

    Date: 05/16/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

    Being a bit of a community junkie, I see my fair share of "cross-posted" posts. Often the post is appropriate to each community, but by being a member of both, I get a somewhat less than beautiful view of each and every copy.

    This issue was brought up years ago in the LJ "Suggestions Box," but I suppose the suggestion was not sufficiently appealing. ( The suggestion box thread )

    So what's the take on this issue from all you knowledgeable web-developers? Is this just a suck-it-up and scroll past it scenario? Or is there a smart way to handle this that nobody's thought of or proposed? If you feel the need to post the same thing to more than one community, how do you handle it?
