I have never done any freelance work for a paying client before. I might be doing some paid web work in the near future for a very small local business. Getting paid is great, but experience and having something to put in my portfolio is even more valuable to me. I would assume an hourly rate is best? As far as how much the rate should be...I am a beginner, but I don't want to sell myself too short. I know I can do a good job. I also don't want to charge too much and risk losing the cliente. I haven't had many opportunities to do actual work, and I'm very excited about this.
Also, having limited experience with this type of work, I would not be sure of how long this job would take me...giving the cliente a price estimate off the bat might be difficult.
My questions are: -Should I charge an hourly rate? -If so, what's a fair rate? Or if not, what's a good flat rate for setting up a website? (I know a flat rate probably depends on many factors.) -How do I handle an estimate going into the job?
* Does anyone know how I can mirror my journal entries onto my own website?
I do believe it can be done (in real time, not c+p), but need to know what type of code must be used, (php or what?), +where to start. (I can google the rest + hopefully learn to do it.)
If it can be done in java script, I was able to find (+use!) tons of free code offered online.
I'd also like to build in a "random generator" but haven't yet found this code in either php or java..
Many thanks to anyone who can give me some suggestions! *
What is the biggest problem faced by the open source community? Is it marketing or our business model?I think it's marketing. Over the weekend I proposed a Web ad campaign called "I am open source." Picture big corporate users of GPL software, real business celebrities, and link to case studies. Show people that open source [...]
I'm currently running my web site off my earthlink account (yeah-- whoppee- free space to upload) but need to get a domain and host. Right now my site is basically a portfolio page, some images and some flash animations. I plan on up loading more flash in the near future (not tons) but am looking for a host with a reasonable plan and enough space so I won't have to worry. Any recommondations?????? Oh-- and the cheaper the better.
The Percepts and Concepts Laboratory at Indiana University would like to to invite you to participate in our interactive, on-line group experiments. The games are entertaining and should be intriguing to those interested in the sciences, gaming etc. Some of the games that we are currently working on include:
Forager: In this experiment, we are interested in how groups of people allocate themselves to resources. Your goal in a four-minute experiment is to pick up as many resources as you can by moving your icon with the arrow keys.
Spread of Innovations: This experiment explores how innovative ideas spread in a group. As you try to solve a puzzle, you see the solutions proposed by your neighbors, and they see your solutions.
Opinion Sharing: You rate things (e.g. faces, music, or paintings) and can see the ratings given by others. Over several rounds of ratings, does your group converge in its opinion or not?
In all of these experiment, you play with other humans when they are available or with artificial intelligence bots when no other humans are currently on-line. By playing our games, our GEE group benefits because we collect data on how collective behavior in human groups emerges, and you benefit by 1) learning about current research questions and methods in the social sciences, 2) sharing an engrossing, communal experience with others people (or bots!), 3) playing games that have deeper significance and more interesting dynamics than solitaire, tetris, or the typical fodder of on-line games. The experiments will run on any computer that has Java 1.4 or later, and can be found at:
If you like the experiments, please tell your friends or favorite news group, blog, or forum. The more people who are in our virtual world at any time, the more fun it is (and the more data we collect). Also, please reply to this email is you would like to be placed on our mailing list, or if you're willing to place a link to our site on your web page. If you find any bugs or have suggestions for improvements, please email Andy Jones or Allen Lee , and CC Rob Goldstone (rgoldsto@indiana.edu).

Our next adventure for our site is to produce a live (or pre-recorded) streaming radio show from our site. I'm looking into what the most reasonable (free/cheap) solution would be. The broadcast point would be in a remote location which has only satellite internet connection (Direcway.com - 100kbs up & 1Mbs down), so hosting directly is not much of an option. We would max out at four or five listeners. Real Audio offered a solution for carrying hundreds of simultaneous listeners, but they charge an insane amount of money for their service.
I'm looking for somewhere in between.
We have our site hosted professionally on a Unix server. Is there perhaps a way to use the web server as a broadcast point? Is there some sort of program that we could use to hop our signal from there? Isn't there a way I could just write it into some sort of server-side scripting rather than buying a chunk of software? Help!!
Elitists often say there is no replacement for quality straight html coding. This is what I know and what I've been using. I'd like to learn programs like Dreamweaver and GoLive because it seems that tedious coding can be done much more easily.
Do a lot of people utilize the slice tool in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator? What's the best way of going about that? Do you just set up your layers exactly as you want them and slice out wherever you want links? Is this a common approach?
Hello all, I'm new to the list, and I want to jump right in and ask a stupid question: is there any way for me to set things up so I see user passwords unencrypted when I log in as root? I looked around on the mysql website but couldn't find any information. Any ideas?

Okay, I'm having a bit of a problem here... I'm trying to create an RSS feed from my MySQL database. Unfortunately though, I can't seem to write to a file. PHP isn't running in safe mode, and the enclosing folder permissions don't seem to make a difference. The file gets created, but no writing occurs, and if the 'is_writeable' statement is taken out, the script runs until it times out and gives an error 500. Anyone have any clues?

$filepointer = fopen("/kunden/homepages/28/d58558265/htdocs/rss/news.rss", "w+") or die ("can't open file");
With all the noise about Apple's decision to switch to Intel chips (in a few years...) there hasn't been much made of the WebKit Open Source Project, including CVS access to WebCore and JavaScriptCore, public bug tracker, public mailing lists and IRC channel to better work with the open source community. Okay, I am a budding freelance designer...and I am in charge of my first major project since graduation. I am working on this alone, everything seems to be going well, but my client wants more information about search engine placement as well as how to get a top ranking site. I am really unclear how the best way to do this is, I've done some research on the web - basically ruling out the fact that meta tags (also inspired by the topic earlier this week) are not going to cut it and I've submitted the site to a bunch of search engines already. So far the searches only bring up the site if you search the company's name, not by keyword search. Any suggestions?
I'm a very caring and considerate person. I'm very comic, and love nice conversations. I know that I am a good listener. Clickhere to see my favorite website
my exams finished today and i intend to learn PHP for my websites. i've been dying to for such a long time but i have a question. i really don't get this MySQL business- installing it on what? my computer? i have a Mac (PowerBook G4) .. so is it compatible?
it's possible to do PHP in DreamWeaver right? also, if anyone wants to point me in the direction of any easy PHP tutorials... feel free XD
Dreamweaver MX question: I'm working with layers, which I've never done before and would not normally do. I'm teaching a set curriculum to kids at a technology camp, so its inevitable.
The lesson involves using a layer to animate an element on their website. I'm trying to do this myself so I can help them do it, but it's not working. I'm using a transparant gif. The timeline appears as it should, moves as it should when I drag the playhead, but the gif does not move when I preview in IE 6.
You'll have to excuse my relative noobishness. I'm not great at PHP, but unfortunately I have a job to do.
Has anyone used PHP do do something with PayPal's Instant Payment Notification? I have to run a script that sends different messages to the buyer based on what product they buy. I have a script (mostly copied from PayPalDev, but I'd say I pretty much know what it's doing) that gets the variables from $_POST with fsockopen(). The script already redefines these array variables (i.e., what you would do if register_globals were off), and they seem like they're all there since it sends me mail when $payer_email is used with mail(). The problem I have is that $item_number prints blank every time.
// check the payment_status is Completed // check that txn_id has not been previously processed // check that receiver_email is your Primary PayPal email // check that payment_amount/payment_currency are correct // process payment
// if 'VERIFIED', send email
if ($item_number == 'RCP1101') {mail($payer_email, $subject, "You ordered the book", "From: $from");}
else if ($item_number == 'RCP1102') {mail($payer_email, $subject, $msg_02, "From: $from");}
else if ($item_number == 'RCP1103') {mail($payer_email, $subject, $msg_03, "From: $from");}
else if ($item_number == 'RCP1104') {mail($payer_email, $subject, $msg_04, "From: $from");}
