1. Any Thunderbird RSS gurus out there?

    Date: 05/31/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: php, rss, html, xml, web

    I just started using Thunderbird as an RSS reader and I'm noticing strange behavior with my feed. If I load up http://www.perturb.org/rss.php in thunderbird the entries it displays are links to web pages. When I view one of those feeds it shows that entry as it is embeded on the webpage. If I look at one of the entries from http://www.lessig.org/blog/index.xml the entry shows the raw text that's in the RSS feed no HTML requests made.

    Considering the first feed is from my blog, how do I make Thunderbird show the raw content, instead of the HTML. It's exported correctly. Bloglines sees the content just fine. Is there a Thunderbird setting I'm missing?

  2. best forum for coldfusion developers?

    Date: 05/31/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, software, java, web, google

    Hi folks, new to the community, and new to ColdFusion - however I have many years of experience in software development and web design using other languages and technologies.

    I've checked out the excellent ColdFusion links in the community userinfo, and beyond those I was wondering - where's the best online forum out there for ColdFusion developer brainshare?

    I saw the one at Macromedia's own site, it was okay but not very impressive. Coming from other development communities like PHP and Java I was wondering if the ColdFusion community is just much less talkative, and that's as good as it gets? Also I'm usually leary of forums run by software manufacturers, as sometimes they are questionably moderated when critcism gets posted.

    Anyways thanks in advance for any reccomendations. Serious CF developers only please - I can Google for random sites all by myself. I'm wondering what the "pros" prefer.

  3. Footer in CSS

    Date: 05/31/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css, html, web

    Ok...what am I doing wrong? I decided to really try to conquer CSS. I created a site that looks fine in IE, but in Netscape and Firefox, it looks crappy. What am I missing??

    http://www.activedigitalmedia.com/azzarello/index.php

    How do I get the footer to actually go to the bottom of the page??

    Anyone here adept at using html in custom LJ styles? I need help with my journal style, I want to add my userpic to each entry on the main page, and it's being difficult.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

    EDIT:

    Fixed version is here:

    It took some rewrite of code after reviewing this page:

  5. C# Programmer Needed

    Date: 06/01/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: web, hosting, shopping

    We're a web design/hosting company. We were hired last week by a company to host their site. The site is a combination shopping cart/image vault/ FTP Product Push, etc. We were told the site was complete and ready to go live. The company that built the site was dismissed because of disagreements of some nature.

    We're not proficient in C# but didn't think it would be a problem since the site was supposedly complete. The image vault portion of the site isn't working. We are supposed to go live with this on Friday, and unfortunately every C# programmer we've contacted has bailed for one reason or another.

    Would anyone in this community be interested in some freelance work on a very short deadline?

    Thanks in advance.

  7. problem sending/forwarding emails with my Netscape mail account & Netscape 7.2 mail client

    Date: 06/02/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, html, web, spam

    I am having a problem sending/forwarding emails with my Netscape mail account & Netscape 7.2 mail client. More specifically, I am trying to forward spam to my spamcop.com account [http://www.spamcop.net/] to automatically LART the headers & content. (I forward the spam emails as an attachment to my SpamCop account address, it parses out the spam email(s), then emails me back with a link to a web from with the email parsed out and I select who I LART. Dam slick, IMHO) Everything was working fine before this past weekend.

    Now, when I try to forward a single or multiple spam emails I get the following error:

    Alert
    An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 554 AOL will not accept delivery of this message.
    TRANSACTION FAILED. Please check the message and try again.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    By the way:
    Please do NOT say to use Thunderbird - I already tried this a few months back, and the Netscape / AOhelL mail server does not recognize the client; something is specifically written into the Netscape mail client to authenticate to their servers, and I have been unable to figure it out. Unless you have a solution to the problem

    Please do NOT say to upgrade to Netscape 8 - I tried the new version over the weekend, and the mail client is gone, and the Netscape account is opened in some funky assed web browser interface (separate than logging into the account from netscape.com) where you can not turn off HTML email or anything else to make it 'safer'. IMHO, it sucks.

    x-posted
    Edit: edit post due to comment of it being seemingly 'rude', and corrected the Mozilla project stand alone email client name to Thunderbird.

  8. sliced image not all loading

    Date: 06/02/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Hello, me again...
    I've got a portfolio page here that brings up individual images of garden buildings. I've sliced the individual images into four slices - but for some reason not all of the slices always load for the client. Each of the slices is around 14k-20k which I guess is a little on the large side, but I don't want to lose quality of image. He's on dial-up - but I can't really that blame for the problem either!

    Can anyone suggest why the slices won't all load for him? I don't want to think that it's due to the site being in Tripod webspace, but I have had problems with them before.

    Date: 06/03/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html, web

    This is slightly off-topic, but I'm hoping someone here might know how to do this.

    Does anyone know if it's possible to cause a users default web browser to open upon insertion of a DVD-ROM? I have a client who wants an HTML site with a menu list of links to other files stored on a DVD, and would like end users to access the interface via their web browser. Is there some way to set it to auto play, which would then open the browser and the interface?

  12. Google Sitemaps

    Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: xml, web, google

    Google Sitemaps is a new experiment by Google. Web site owners can place an xml-formatted sitemap on their webserver and notify Google.

    By placing a Sitemap-formatted file on your webserver, you enable our crawlers to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly.

    My Sitemaps page will show information about downloading and processing of your sitemap by Google.

    Google also offer Sitemap Generator, an open source client in Python to create sitemaps. Sitemap Generator can create sitemaps from URL lists, webserver directories, or from access logs and notify Google.

  14. Hey..

    Date: 06/03/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: cms, database, sql, web, seo, microsoft

    Hey everybody. I hope there are some smart database people out there to make up for my lack of knowledge.

    Anyway, I have a (hopefully) rather simple question.

    I work at the local university maintaining the webpage for the nursing program here. The ladys I work for are not very computer smart, so I'm trying to develop an easier way for them to upload new data to class pages, new homework assignments, new lecture slides, etc etc etc. Basically a kind of micro-cms system.

    Yes, I'm reinventing the wheel, but I feel it will be a good experience for me.

    Well, I'm using .NET for this (C#) because of what's available here at school, and while in the end, everything will be on the SQL Server, for development purposes the webmaster for the school has said that I need to use MS Access.

    Blech. Hopefully I won't have to change a whole lot of stuff for the migration to happen, but for now I'm stuck.

    Unfortunately, while I can figure out the Queries and the basic commands, actually connecting to a MS Access database is proving to be rather difficult for me. I cannot seem to find an authoratative guide on what all I need to put to create the connect.

    Most of the functions are going to be located in a seperate file, and once its all compiled, it should (hopefully) work. But I cannot seem to find what the connect string is.

    In my databaseConnect() function I have this:

    void databaseConnect()
    {
    String connectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.Oledb.4.0;";
    connectionString += "Data Source=I:/web/nursing/dev/resources/exams/nursingExams.mdb;";
    createUpdateExamConnection = new OleDbConnection (connectionString);
    databaseOpen();
    } //end databaseConnect

    For some reason, this just doesn't seem to work.

    I've imported the correct thing, as far as I can tell...
    using System.Data.OleDb;

    But I'm stuck.

    Any info that you guys can give me would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much!

  16. Hoping that someone can help me.

    Date: 06/03/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: web, hosting

    Hi there,

    I'm at my wits end and I'm hoping that there is someone who knows more about this than I do who can help me, but, I'm getting ahead of myself.

    Two years ago, I started a small business, I plan weddings and sell wedding related items. In August of that year, at the recommendation of another wedding planner, I created a website and had it hosted by Zanuc.com.

    My problem is, Zanuc has gone MIA. They said that their sites were being hosted by CMG Web Hosting which doesn't exist. I've been trying to find out what happened to my account (that is paid in full through August of this year)

    I wasn't so upset, becasue the site was still running, but, this week, it has gone missing. I spoke to the Assoc. Director at Peak-10 which is the company that hosts the servers for Zanuc and he had no idea that Zanuc had done this to their customers. According to him, the machines he hosts for Zanuc are running fine.

    Any ideas what I can do?

    Thanks.Gail

  17. Google Sitemap: Movable Type Template

    Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: xml, web, google

    Create a new index template with the following code: <$MTEntryPermalink$> <$MTEntryModifiedDate format="%Y-%m-%d"$> .

    Screenshot of creating new Movable Type template

    Save and build the file.

    The above code creates a Google sitemap file containing individual entry links. If you want category archives links and date-based archives links you can add them easily using MT Template tags. Your sitemap file may not be larger than 10MB.

    Now you can submit your sitemap to Google through your Sitemaps account or using an HTTP request to the following URL: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://url_of_your_/sitemap.xml

    There are two more tags you can put inside : changefreq (how frequently the content is likely to change) and priority (priority of the page relative to other pages on the site).

    Example:
    daily
    0.3.

  18. Dynamic Subdomain Generation

    Date: 06/04/05 (Apache)    Keywords: css, xml, web, apache

    I've been looking around, trying to find information about how I should go about setting up a system for dynamic subdomain generation. Here's the way I currently have to create a new subdomain:

    1. Add the Virtual Host to httpd.conf
    2. Request that the subdomain be added to my Web host's DNS (I'm using a VDS)
    3. Wait for the changes to propagate
    4. Hope that what I asked for is what I really wanted
    5. GOTO STEP 1 As Needed
    I feel that I should be able to create subdomains (img.cparker15.com, xml.cparker15.com, css.cparker15.com, dtd.cparker15.com, etc.) on the fly. Is there a way to accomplish this with Apache and/or an Apache module?

    I've heard things about mod_rewrite, but I don't know where to begin, if mod_rewrite is even a viable solution.

  19. Lots a questions..

    Date: 06/04/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, virus, web, spyware

    Hello, newbie here! I've got a lot of problems so I'll just put the first batch behind a cut..

    -Is it safe to delete Internet Explorer/Outlook Express if I have Firefox and Thunderbird? Is there a way for Firefox to actually connect to the internet without using another program? (I use Walmart Connect)

    -What are your favorite programs to have on your computer?

    -We got a new computer because the old one was full of roaches (well actually we borrowed it and never gave it back, heh), and it doesn't have a whole lot of the basic programs...

    -One day this computer stopped displaying the background unless it was starting up or shutting down. A few months later it went into safe mode and said something about accepting a trojan horse and to scan the comp with anti-virus software to make it alright.
    Well, I've scanned it with Spybot, AVG Free (one that keeps coming up is DSO Exploit), and Whos Watching me, the free online thingy from Pandasoftware (I THINK its panda software. It starts with Panda but I'm not sure about the 'software' part), and maybe a few other programs and the computer's gotten a little faster but it won't switch out of safe mode. Oh, and I've also defragged it more often (yay for regular computer maininence! If only I could take care of myself that much, lol), and stopped visiting those wierd websites that like to install spyware but my dad gets on and visits those sites ON PURPOSE, unwittingly defeating my attempts at limiting the amount of stuff we get.

    -And, is there a way to keep roaches and other insects out of the computer?

    I would ask you how to kill my dad and get away with it so that I wouldn't have to put up with him messing the computer up so bad but then I'd be miserable and we wouldn't have the money to have anything at all.

    Thanks in advance.

  20. Money question

    Date: 06/05/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I have never done any freelance work for a paying client before. I might be doing some paid web work in the near future for a very small local business. Getting paid is great, but experience and having something to put in my portfolio is even more valuable to me. I would assume an hourly rate is best? As far as how much the rate should be...I am a beginner, but I don't want to sell myself too short. I know I can do a good job. I also don't want to charge too much and risk losing the cliente. I haven't had many opportunities to do actual work, and I'm very excited about this.

    Also, having limited experience with this type of work, I would not be sure of how long this job would take me...giving the cliente a price estimate off the bat might be difficult.

    My questions are:
    -Should I charge an hourly rate?
    -If so, what's a fair rate? Or if not, what's a good flat rate for setting up a website? (I know a flat rate probably depends on many factors.)
    -How do I handle an estimate going into the job?

    Thanks everyone!
