  2. problems accessing web pages & such

Date: 07/07/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, virus, web

Up until a week and a half ago I wasn't having any problems accessing webpages. Then I fdisked my computer--which I've done in the past with this computer & others (in other words I know what I'm doing ;))--all was fine and dandy until two days later my computer refuses to boot all the way up. It gives me a message that it can't find 'lsass.exe' and restarts...over again. As I've never had a problem with viruses, I never bothered to make a rescue disc for my anti-virus program (AVG) and had to fdisk the computer. That went well. Then I started having problems accessing web pages through any web browser other than AOL. I like to use Firefox, Mozilla, and separate IE windows, and this hasn't caused problems before. Particularly I can't access LJ outside of AOL, there are other sites but that's the one I've noticed the most since I try to get to it so often. ;) I've tried signing on with free Netzero and I can't access *any* web pages then. This is getting really frustrating as the AOL browser setup is limited. Does anyone have any idea as to what's the problem?

  5. Large-Storage Host Needed

    Date: 07/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Hi guys,

I have a client who runs a recording business. As such, he wants a web app to distribute mix files to his clients to listen to without having to have them set up a FTP client and so on. As such, I need to find him a web host who allows a fairly large capacity (like 5 GB, or even more) on cheap plans. Since most of these large files will be downloaded only once or twice, he doesn't need oodles of transfer, either.

    Suggestions?

  7. Webcam Chat program functionality....?

Date: 07/08/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, asp, web, linux

A customer recently sent me a link and expressed interest in adding this functionality to his site.
I've never seen anything like this before, so I'm not really sure what this entails.

Here is the link he provided me with:
    http://latinlifemates.com/services/webcam.asp

From what I understand, he wants to duplicate this "service" on his own site (a similar dating service). His site is php/Linux....If anyone has ever heard of anything like this, please give me some insight....This is not my usual brand of webdev. haha.

In case the link isn't working for some reason, here is a quick run-down:
It appears to be a service offered by a dating company, wherein a (male) client pays said dating company by the minute to chat on a webcam via MSN messenger with another (female) client.
Said dating company will arrange for the female to be at a certain location at a certain time, and the male will be able to video chat with her for a set period of time.

.....wtf? call me naiive, but I had no idea that this "video prostituting" actually existed (lol)

Anyway.....Thanks in advance if anyone can offer any information on things of this nature. :)

  10. new

Date: 07/09/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, programming, css, html, web, hosting

hello. i'm new here. kind of new with webdesign as well (been doing it for almost a year just as a hobby; mostly with css and html).

    1. i'm just curious as to how many of you actually have made webdesign/programming your career, and if so, what route did you take in college (certificate, associates, bachelors, etc). i'm a second year community college student, and i'm interested in persuing webdesign as a career, technical side and design side, so i guess im just confused as to what i should do in school to get where i'm wanting to be (job as a webdesigner for a company). any tips, suggestions?

2.also, i'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but in the userinfo, " Affordable & Reliable Webhosts" was left blank. so i'm going to ask you guys for some reccomendations on hosts. ive done godaddy, and 1and1.com before.. and neither have what i want for a low enough price. i'm looking for something that will allow me to have multiple ftp accounts, php, a decent amount of bandwidth, multiple domain hosting, etc. any suggestions?

    3. last but not least, i'm looking into using moveable type as a blog for my website. i would like to achieve something like this. does anyone have any experience with this? is it fairly easy? is there something better i should be using. as you can tell, i'm kind of a beginner, and i would love if you would point me in the right direction if i'm missing out on something better.

any help would be awesome. thanks!

  11. Attempt #2

Date: 07/09/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

Okay, my computer is acting up a little more now.

I posted just a few days ago about my computer acting up. It hits these lapses, where nothing will open but folders. If I try to "trick" the computer by entering a URL in the address bar of a folder window, attempting to open a webpage, the folder stops responding. After a few minutes, everything catches up with itself.

This USUALLY happens once every 1-2 days. But today it's happened at least twice. And, for the first time since I had the computer, it crashed. When it rebooted, it blamed an AOL file (even though AOL wasn't running). The 2nd time tonight it had the lapse issue, twice it told me that " : The system cannot find the specified file." I had to restart to get it out of the lapse.

I'll probably just call Compaq Tech Support tomorrow.

  14. Fetching erased data!

Date: 07/11/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: programming, web, linux

Okay guys, trust me I looked at the rules before posting this but I need some major help ASAP.
I am quite experienced working with computers (Linux, Programming, web design, etc.)
However, I haven't learned anything about finding old data that someone deleted from their computer or overrided.

My mother is a court reporter, she's spent this entire weekend working on an 800 page transcript.
She somehow erased the entire document and then saved a blank document under the same name of the old document, therefore wiping out many hours of work.
She is currently having a heart attack. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to go back and fetch the data.
I've told her not to save anything else until I see what I can do.

Can anyone please point me to how I might find the info and bring it back up? Please? She was dreading this particular job all week and I'd really like to help her get it back.
Links, explainations, anything would be great help.

X-Posted, sorry if its not allowed, this is a bit too important to care much.

Date: 07/11/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, templates, web

I've dabbled in building a small site or two with PHP, but my friend has asked me to help with a large scope project. It'll be a site that helps companies stay in touch with clients, posting progress reports on the web. (There are a few sites that already provide this service, but we're looking to start this ourselves, if only for the learning experience.)

Conceptually, I have no problem with most of the project, but it just seems like too much coding to get done in a reasonable time-frame. Surely there are some template code-blocks out there for things like: creating user-accounts with passwords & password hints; file upload scripts that check whether filetypes and sizes are valid; juggling filetypes between pdf's and images; etc.

Do sites with templates for this exist, or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Date: 07/12/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: rss, asp, web

    Hello all,
MSDN has some ASP.NET Events coming up.. I have a feed specifically set for California but they may be near your town too. RSS feeds can be found here: http://www.msdnevents.com/rss/customFeeds.aspx

Now I have a question about ASP.NET 2.0. My friend and I are both classic asp developers getting our feet wet with asp.net 2.0. To practice, we are making a portal with some web parts and some of the parts will just be RSS headlines. We have code that works very well but we'd like to limit the results to 5 per feed.. I've looked into using XSL to do the limitation but it seems so bulky. Does anyone have an elegant suggestion? We've scrolled through all of the properties but can't find anything :\
