frustrating problem
Date: 09/13/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: css, web
I'm setting up a website for a client here: www.mylbags.com/client_area/armetta
I want the white portion of the screen to go from above the menu icons to the very bottom of the page. the only way i could figure to do this giving it a fixed height. I'd rather not do this because then i get a ton of empty scrolling on low resolutions. here's the css definition:
div.main
{
background-color: white;
text-align: center;
position: absolute;
left: 0px;
top: 324px;
width: 100%;
height: 830px;
z-index:1;
}
I tried making height 100%, or inserting a table with height at 100% or even 50% into the actual instance of the div, but neither worked. With these, the white was reduced to just a thin stripe stretching the complete width of the page.
Help me please!!!!!!

WebSQL?
Date: 09/13/05
(Web Development) Keywords: php, database, sql, web
I have been working on some databases that I'd like to put up on the web eventually. They are mostly inventories of my philatelic, numismatic collections, mp3s, videos in Excel format right now. I would be able to add, update, and remove entries from my website (with admin password of course) using forms or if I have tons of entries to do I can upload the updated database instead. Visitors, including myself would be able to search the databases by using dropboxes to narrow down the query and find relevant entries or use a simple keyword search. The results would be displayed in a table with links to individual entries than would be displayed in a form-like fashion with any graphic available relating to the entry (ex. a photograph of a coin).
The problem is, i have no clue how to do this. First of all, what format should these database be in? Access dbs? What resources are there to learn how to set up this searchable/queriable database? I intend to have these searchable inventories on my website and the individual pages are php. So the display of these results should be compatible with them. Do I use WebSQL? I need to learn how to set up a form and have it hooked up with the database, but what language is it?
I'm so clueless I don't even know where to look. Any help is appreciated!

Browser.ini

(PHP Community) Keywords: php, browser, asp, web
So i've been trying to use get_browser() on my website to test something, and I've been looking at the documentation on php.net (http://us2.php.net/manual/en/function.get-browser.php) and one of the comments mentions taking info from php_browsercap.ini (grabbed from http://www.garykeith.com/browsers/downloads.asp presumably) and putting into browsercap.ini to fix the parsing error messages.
But I'm not sure where I'd put the php_browsercap.ini file in my directory.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

(WebDesign) Keywords: web
I just met with someone about doing some freelance webdesign for a new company. He seemed to like my work and the meeting went well, in general.
Now what? This will be my first freelance job. I have no idea where to even begin with this. We talked about what he had in mind... so now do I put together some possible design solutions and go from there? Would that be "on the clock?"
Any general freelance advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Praises and Faults of Firefox From a MS Exec's Mind
Date: 09/15/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web, microsoft
Mr. Scott used to work at Microsoft Corporation and was responsible for designing much of what is now Internet Explorer. Being at Microsoft from 1994 to 2003, he held several job titles such as: usability engineer, program manager, lead program manager, and training manager. He also worked as a lead program manager on Microsoft Windows and MSN. After using Firefox, Scott decided to abandon IE's camp and now only surfs the web with the blazing fox. In a fascinating blog, he expresses the reasons behind his decision to switch browsers. Based on his experience and expertise, he cleverly points out the pros and cons of Firefox compared to IE. I agree with some of them, others I totally disagree This is his exciting story written in Berkun Blog under the title, "Why I Switched to Firefox".
To read this story, kindly click the following link: http://www.scottberkun.com/blog/?p=115. I hope you will enjoy Scott's story as much as I did; as well as the thoughtful comments made by several readers of the blog.
Enjoy,

Web Counters/Trackers
Date: 09/16/05
(Web Development) Keywords: software, virus, web, tracker, google
Hi everyone,
I'm a total newbie, and I have a question about web counters/trackers. Is there any web counter software (particularly something free) that you would recommend? My boss wants something that will track not just individual hits, but individual users (who may or may not have repeat visits), repeat visits, etc. I've done a search on Google and found quite a few free ones, but I want to be sure there isn't a hidden cost to them (pop-ups, viruses, whatever).
Something free is best, but if you know of a company that sells a really good counter/tracker, I'd be happy to hear about that too.
And as a last resort, is it difficult for somebody who knows web design (not me!) to come up with one on their own?
I'm afraid this may be an elementary question; so I apologize in advance if it is, or if it's been discussed before (please provide the link!), or appears in a community FAQ (I couldn't find one -- if it exists, please let me know).

CNET Ranks Firefox in Top Ten Products
Date: 09/16/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, html, web, google
Its nice to know that CNET, a highly-recognized-computer web site, has ranked Firefox among its top ten products for the last ten years. The list was produced as part of CNET's tenth anniversary celebrations. Earlier this year, Firefox made CNET's list of the top ten downloads of the past decade. Products were selected based on the most wide-ranging acceptance.
On Firefox, CNET says: "Sure, Mozilla has been around for many years, but Firefox 1.0 brought the open-source browser into the mainstream. Some never thought Mozilla could make it as anything more than a geek badge of pride. The light, secure, and efficient Firefox is legitimately challenging Internet Explorer's stranglehold on Web browsing."
TOP TEN PRODUCTS
1. iPod (2001)
2. TiVo (1999)
3. Google (1996)
4. Napster (1999)
5. Firefox (2004)
6. PalmPilot (1996)
7. Motorola Startac (1996)
8. Apple iMac (1998)
9. Sony Digital Mavica MVC-HDS (1997)
10. The Sims (2000)

(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: php, mysql, software, database, sql, web
Does anyone know how much one can expect to spend to hire someone to create a mysql/php script? The one in particular is for allowing a member to view online statements at a gym website and needless to say, quite secure. The software we use for gym management uses a mysql database. I've got to run this by my manager in two days so I'm looking for how much he can expect to spend and what is a good and reliable source to get this done. Thanks for any assistance. Trinity

Scattered Questions
Date: 09/18/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, google
I have no experience in web design, but, I'd really like to consider getting into it. Where do I go, and what do I do? Sending myself back to college isn't feasible, right now (although a night course or two might be). Also, how is the market for this occupation? Before anyone tells me to Google/Monster it...I already have. The reason I'm asking here is that the answers I've gotten are reeeeally conflicting. I thought I'd ask here, and get some clearer answers from those who know first-hand.
Also, are any of you in IT? MIS? Are these occupations really as dead-end and yesterday's-news as I've heard?
How much calculus must I know to break into any of these areas?
Anyway, if you've read this, thanks for doing so. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,
Could you recommend to me some multimedia designers whose works you admire?
It could be a personal favourite too, or just some designer's name that you've heard of somewhere. Just for clarification .. when I say 'Multimedia' I mean designers who play around with Flash/Dreamweaver/Animation/Websites. I just need a bit of inspiration :)
Thanks so much in advance!

Styled Forms
Date: 09/18/05
(Web Development) Keywords: html, web
Hi everyone. I have an assignment for class and I'm having trouble finding a site on the net that uses a 'styled form'.
An example of a styled form would be one with altered text properties, etc, but I can't seem to remember or find one off hand. The assignment is to find a styled form and view its source code, make a new html page, then create a new form on the new page that leverages the styled form found on the existing web page. It's kind of wacky, but for starters I need to find a funky form that returns something interesting.
If anyone has any suggestions, that would be wonderful! Thanks -
