  2. Stock Photos & Tracking

    Date: 09/06/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

    Would anyone have recommendations for a stock photo site and web tracking software?

    I tried iStockphoto.com which is cheap but they are very limited on their photo selection, especially when it comes to minorities, and Webtrends was what I used to use for tracking, but I'm not sure if there is something better out there. This is for a medium-sized non-profit org which gets it's fair share of Internet traffic, however, the stock photos are mainly for the web and not used for any other publications.

    Thanks.

  3. in desperate need of some advice

    Date: 09/06/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

    Hi i'm new to this community.. been reading and watching for a while but never posted in here.  I am a beginging webdesigner. have a few clients. Right now though I'm working  on a site for www.killerkreations.biz  .. and here is my dilemma:

    I made the www.killerkreations.biz site and design a while ago and wanted to clean it up so i made www.killerkreations.biz/newsitedesign.htm  you get an idea if you go there, click on gallery and then trucks.. thats as far as i got. but my client doesn't like it.. says it's "cartoony" which i can understand.He doesn't want the skulls, just some other design (which i am currently trying to think up something cool looking) so i want i make something clean and simple not as busy and all over the place as the original page. I was pretty happy with the new stuff i did.. but i have to change it. i don't think the client even likes the font i used, which i love :)

    so my questions:  Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? or any recources they could suggest.. i have some HTML under my belt but i don't know anything else.. and i am trying to learn flash (haha trying). Also, everyone says it's pretty much nessecary that I learn flash.. I want to but am a bit lost on what would be a good program to invest in. so any help there would be awesome too!

    also. just your opinions on my work so far would be nice! i don't know any other webdesigners so i could use all the constructive critisim i can get!

    Thanks so much

  4. Possible Virus?

    Date: 09/07/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, web, yahoo

    The history:
    Several months back I was looking for a certain model for a certain hair-do for a friend. I clicked around many different Web sites and links and whatnot. All of a sudden, while on a page, I started getting bombarded with pop-ups. Normally pop up blockers work for me. Then, even if not online (well, technically, having DSL means always being connected, but...) like if I'm in, say, Word, I get pop-ups! I told a co-worker, who has a lot more experience than I, and she said to run Norton, Anti-Spy, delete cookies, empty trash and restart. She said deleting my cookies every night would fix it. Wrongola. It helps a little, but not totally. When I ran Norton, there was a file it said was bad, and then it couldn't delete it. I recently noticed the toolbar on Internet Explorer is not something I put there. I had downloaded the Yahoo toolbar for the Anti-Spy thing, and it's totally gone! I downloaded it again. Gone again after restarting. So last night when Norton ran, it found the file again, and I caught trojan.elitebar or something along those lines...and isn't there a trojan virus??

    So, am I totally screwed? Or is there a way to fix me?

  5. The Importance of Software

    Date: 09/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

    (x-posted)

    I still remember a piece of paper that was placed upon the wall in the class of my final year of graphic/web design. It read something like this:

    "The best thing to use out of the following is: PhotoShop, Freehand, Flash, GoLive, Quark, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Your Imagination, CorelDRAW, Fireworks, InDesign."

    I always enjoyed reading that :-)

    On that note, whom of you believe that keeping up to date with the latest software is an absolute necessity, and whom of you believe that it's ok to work in an older package, as long as it gets the job done?

  8. I need advice...or somehing

    Date: 09/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: programming, templates, web

    Help. Tell me what to do.

    Sorry in advance for the length...but I have to tell it all:

    There is an affilliate of the University of Florida (the major college in my town) called University Press. I got a tip from a business associate to bid on revamping their website. I spoke with him on the phone and got the details...we had a long conversation and I provided him with a quote for design and build out...I excluded programming from the quote because HE is the one in the office who handles that. He was only looking for design and build out. He called me in to talk and we had a long "interview" about the project. He mentioned that I was better prepared then many others he had talked to...so on and so on. He then asked how comfortable I was with plugging everything and programming after I was finished with the design. I am not a programmer at all. I myself could not do that part, but I have resources that could. He put it in such a way that I thought he was just wondering, but that it was no big deal. He then told me that he had a small networking thing going on the side and was often asked about web design. He wanted to know if I was interested in that type of side work. I told him that he could contact me for that of he wanted and I would see what I could do. He sent me a small site re-do to quote out which I did quote. He contacted me and told me that my rates ( $30/hr) were a little high and wanted to know what my "freelance designer" rates were rather then my business rates. ??? They are one in the same in most all cases unless I'm working with someone. I worked with him a little on the price and then he hit me with this...

    "I really want to get my business off the ground so you do understand that your name won't be anywhere on the site at all right?" I expressed discomfort with that, but was willing to just put one line at the bottom of the site about design only - I didn't want to discard all credit though. Then he tells me that since I'm not offering programming for UF Press and other bidders were he'd cut me a deal. He said he would put his little company name on the bottom of the site since he was doing the programming (which is his JOB) and mine would not be there at all. UF Press is where he WORKS...his full time job. This site has nothing to do with him personally. He then told me that they were going to hire him to do it, but that he said he didnt want to do the design portion. I found out that he doesn't know how to design or how to use the programs used for design, so he can't do it. I told him that I would gladly quote the programming end if needed, but that I was NOT comfortable with his way of doing things and that I would not relinquish credit for my part. Now I have found myself in a position where he is almost putting himself against me as competition. ????

    I just went to his website which a purchased flash template with 3 other purchased templates in the "portfolio" section. He has no clients at all.

    Do I go above his head and let them know what he's doing? I am sure they have no clue. It really pissed me off. What do I do? Did I do the right thing? :(

    Using MySQL and PostgreSQL on FreeBSD and Linux machines
    (the problem)
    I have four databases (actually MDF and LDF files) from a client. They want to know if they can extract data from the four databases by year and place them in to individual databases. This sounds ok, but I am new to Microsoft's SQL server. I sacrificed one of my personal dev machines and installed 2k3 Enterprise and 2000 SQL server. Created new databases with the same name as the files and then replaced the new files with the original ones from the client. Super.
    Now what?

    Again my background is in the command line/web front end so I am running a little blind. What is the simplest way to see the data in each database? What are some _quality_ sites I can read (because googling information you have no idea about takes time to filter out the bs).

    Hi there,

    I'm new at using Dreamweaver and I'm trying to develop a web page. The problem I am having is getting images to show up, and to get file links to work. On my computer, everything works fine. However, when other people open the file, it doesn't necessarily work.

    How can I insert images and link documents to the page and make sure they show up?

    Thanks!!

  13. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is Out

    Date: 09/09/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, linux

    For those of you (and me), who are anxious to see what Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is like, we have good news. This afternoon, the Mozilla people finally announced the download site of said product. Their brief announcement said, "Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is now available for download. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is a beta release of our next generation Firefox browser and it is being made available to our early adopter community and our developer and testing community. Current users of Mozilla Firefox 1.0.x should not download or use Deer Park Alpha 2."

    "Note: Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is not the final release of our Web browser, it has been made available for testing purposes only, with no end-user support. If that sounds scary, you'd probably be better off with the latest version of Firefox 1.0."

    Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 is available for:

    1. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 for Windows (English)
    2. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 for Linux (English)
    3. Deer Park Alpha 2 for Mac OS X (English)

    I couldn't download web site for version in other languages. Perhaps tomorrow this problem will be fixed.

    The download link is: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/

    Enjoy,

    Omar.-

  15. New Firefox Vulnerability )c:=

    Date: 09/09/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: security, web

    It seems that a new critical security vulnerability has been found in Firefox, unfortunately the day after 1.5 Beta 1 was released. It seems to affect all current versions (including 1.5 Beta 1), and can be used for arbitrary code execution and/or to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability has to do with a malformed URL, so the way to mitigate the problem is to not follow links to or from untrusted website. It sounds like disabling IDN support may mitigate it too, but I have no confirmation on that. Hopefully this will be patched quickly...I'll edit this post and/or post again once I hear of a patch becoming available.

    Note that there are currently no known exploits for this vulnerability, so just exercise caution when following links.

    For more information, see today's diary at the Internet Storm Center, or the Secunia advisory.

  18. first post

    Date: 09/12/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

    I've been watching for a while now as I have also been reading up trying to learn web design. I'm a print and or animation person, but have been meaning to expand my knowledge for a while now.

    So, I created my first website after teaching myself some CSS. Its a portfolio site for my work. I wanted a clean, fun, simple design and I wanted it all in CSS, no tables. This is just a start, I have plans on making it better and eventually I want a contact form on the site instead of having my address listed right there, but that is something I'm still learning and haven't had time to focus on yet.

    Comments and critiques welcome, I'm still learning and figured some feedback might serve me well.

  19. frustrating problem

    Date: 09/13/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, web

    I'm setting up a website for a client here: www.mylbags.com/client_area/armetta

    I want the white portion of the screen to go from above the menu icons to the very bottom of the page. the only way i could figure to do this giving it a fixed height. I'd rather not do this because then i get a ton of empty scrolling on low resolutions. here's the css definition:

    div.main
      {
      background-color: white;
      text-align: center;
      position: absolute;
      left: 0px;
      top: 324px;
      width: 100%;
      height: 830px;
      z-index:1;
      }

    I tried making height 100%, or inserting a table with height at 100% or even 50% into the actual instance of the div, but neither worked. With these, the white was reduced to just a thin stripe stretching the complete width of the page.

    Help me please!!!!!!

    attention freelancers!

    help! someone found my website on a link i didn't know i was on, and liked me enough to request a web deisgn for their zine. they wanted a quote but i don't know if i should do an hourly or flat rate. it's an independent zine, and i am not a professional designer, just an artist, BASIC web deisgn by hobby, most likely going to do a clean simple design and simple layout, nothing fancy like flash, etc. just very very simple. any ideas of the price range i should give? and how does consultation usually work? does a designer just design away, or do you show them "sketches" of the layout/navigation to the client? does this factor in as a fee too?
